I'm having trouble with display power management in debian on my laptop. When the screen blanks, it constantly switches between black and a slight brighter black colour. It's like a light constantly goes on and off inside the screen. It's not that annoying and obvious but if you stare at the screen you can notice the difference. Any help?

for vista and above:

0. install ms-sys from AUR https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?K=ms-sys
1. find a pendrive you don't need. re-partition it, one large partition, primary, active, type 07 (NTFS/HPFS/exFAT)
2. format the pendrive as NTFS. THIS IS IMPORTANT, other filesystems will not work
3. find your windows ISO and mount it to somewhere, like /media/cdrom
4. mount your pendrive to somewhere
5. copy EVERYTHINGS from the iso to the pendrive. This will take a few minutes.
6. umount your pendrive (also umount the iso as you won't need it anymore)
7. with ms-sys set up microbenis-compatible boot records boot on the pendrive MBR and partition
assuming your pendrive is sdb and the partition is sdb1:
#for all:
ms-sys -n /dev/sdb1
#for vista:
ms-sys -i /dev/sdb
#for 7 and up
ms-sys -7 /dev/sdb

run sync and you are done. The pendrive should be bootable.

I tried changing it in-place once. Assuming there wasn't an easier way to do it, it was really tedious. It worked, but I had some weird bug in the end where changing to my users home directory wouldn't set "~" on the terminal prompt.

If I ever had to do it again I would just create a new user and copy my files over, then delete the old user, which should be pretty simple.

If you had to install an operating system 20 times then it means you're a retard. If you are deploying it on multiple computers, learn shell scripting.
One of the core principles of Arch is not to use abstraction layers and you're doing the very thing. Which means you don't need it, if your "requirement" clashes with that.
Kill yourself, poser.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

AppImage does not install the application in the traditional Linux sense by putting its various files in the distro's appropriated places in the file system. Instead, like its predecessors klik and portablelinuxapps, no such installation actually takes place. The AppImage file is just its compressed image; this is mounted when it runs.

It uses one file per application. Each one is self-contained: it includes all libraries the application depends on that are not already part of the targeted base-system. An AppImage is an ISO 9660 file with zisofs compression containing a minimal AppDir and a tiny runtime. An AppImage applications can be added to a live CD by adding only one file to the live CD.

AppImage files are simpler than installing an application. No extraction tools are needed, nor is it necessary to modify the operating system or user environment. Regular users on the common Linux distributions can download it, make it executable, and run it.
"""

So every app has it's own virtual file system? What a genius way to make any app portable.

Technically feasible but I do not think that has been seen in the wild.

It's not really the bulk surveillance people worry most about.

I mean, we have generally accepted that individual surveillance may happen with a valid court order and stuff and maybe some entity might theoretically use that technique - but they'll more likely just use a sensitive microphone or dedicated "bugs".

Intel AMT uses a hardware-based out-of-band (OOB) communication channel[1] that operates regardless of the presence of a working operating system. intel64 and ia64 are two different things !

intel64 is also know as em64t (Extended Memory 64-bit Technology)

When amd released amd64, intel made its own implementation named em64t which has its own extensions but lacks some amd64 features.

The common subset from both amd64 and intel64 is x64 (or x86-64).

If you restrict your code to that subset, you program is assured to run on all x64 compliant processors (amd, intel, via, ...)

This basically means "Gentoo's version of Linux", but a Gentoo GNU/Linux system includes more than just a modified kernel.

Yes, so of course changing it does nothing.

It just has the Xorg log if your distro runs Xorg and logs to the most standard location.

My /etc/fstab disappeared and doing sudo genfstab gives me permission denied, send help

>disappeared
Don't lie anon: you deleted it.
>genfstab gives me permission denied
Are you running it as root?
>>
>>60654161
With sudo and my own account it used to just give me "permission denied", now it says command not found, as root it always said command not found and still does

I'm this guy, just wanted to say it's [14e4:43b1]
>>
>>60654176
If you run a command like
sudo somecommand > output
, the sudo only applies to 'somecommand' and not the part where you write the output to the file. Since a normal user won't have write access to /etc, you'll get permission denied.
You'll either have to have a proper root shell open (use su), or do
sudo bash -c "somecommand > output"

>now it says command not found
I don't even think arch ships most of the install scripts in the actual distribution. I think the 'arch-install-scripts' package contains it, but I'm not certain.

Anyone know how to fix this?
>>

Based anon, arch-install-scripts and that bash command did it
cat /etc/fstab
# /dev/sda7
UUID=zxczxczxczc / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1

# gvfsd-fuse
gvfsd-fuse /run/user/1000/gvfs fuse.gvfsd-fuse rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=1000,group_id=100 0 0

# /dev/sda8
UUID=zxzxzxzzzx /home ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 2

# /dev/sda6
UUID=zxzxzxzxzx none swap defaults 0 0

I found my old acer aspire 4736 laptop with a dead HDD and optical drive, now considering putting GNU/linux OS on it.
Which version would be recommended for starters?

How can I install ubuntu (from fedora) without a USB? Is it possible to install it while in fedora? My USB ports are fucked on the machine I'm using so a livecd/usb isn't an option.

What's a good distribution with non shitty Bluetooth support? Ubuntu fucking sucks, mint is 2edgyR@z3rGreen4me, I just need something that works and is stable.

I picked Arch as my first distro like 2-3 weeks ago and it's been great, but if you don't have tons of free time maybe pick Debian

Anyone willing to share their compton config if it's simple lightweight and uses glx/opengl

So all Linux has to offer is edgy and autistic distributions?
Debian is great but I hate working on gnome desktops, fedora is just fedora. Makes me really consider switching to OS X but then again I'm not a CS cuck so I still need access to software only available on Linux or windows and I'm definitely not going windows.

Fucking Wayland overheating my amd graphics card with 6-8 celsius degrees more then under X11, no matter the compositor, i tried weston 1.12 a few month ago without xwayland and now sway 1.13 with one, maybe problem with mpv?

I'm trying to install Arch and I'm getting an error when trying to install the base system files.

I know I've got an internet connection and I can ping out.

error: failed to install packages to new root

Yea I need to switch away from ubuntu because the Bluetooth support sucks ass. But I don't want to be bothered installing mate or xfce with any of the other edge distros. I just need something that just werks.

How can I update the "*-git" AUR packages with pacaur? for instance when I do
pacaur -Syua --devel --aur
it finds "numix-icon-theme-git" but tells me it's going to download "numix-icon-theme-git-latest", is this going to be a NEW package on top of the "numix-icon-theme-git"?
