CPUs:
>G4560 - budget builds (<$500) unless G4600/G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>R5 1500x - generally all you need for 60fps with power to spare. No i5
>R5 1600 - best value for higher fps gaming & mixed usage; 1600x if you too lazy to OC
>i7-7700k - bad value but good for higher FPS; may have heat issues
>R7/Xeon - compute/Multitask/mixed use
>Threadripper/i9 soon

Graphics:
>G4560 iGPU is fine for desktop stuff and very light game
>1050/Ti for low budget. Drop settings if not Freesync/Gsync on newer games; RX560 if discounted
>RX570 4GB - 1080p@60+hz, running most maxed; older games at 144+hz
>RX580 8GB - 1440p@60+hz, inject SMAA & drop settings for some games
>1060 - Generally outperformed by the RX 580 and GSync costs more; consider only if AMD is not an option (ie CUDA)
>1070 - 1080p@90-144hz/1440p@100+hz
>1080 - 1080p@100-144+hz maxed; 1440p at lower hz.
>1080Ti - 1440p@90-144+hz; 4k@60hz in SOME games, more at lower settings
>Freesync2 & Vega soon

General:
>READ PRODUCT REVIEWS to see if that cheap SSD/PSU or whatever is reliable
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity as a scratch disk
>Stop confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>Go mATX form factor for cheaper board+case
>1 SR DIMM is slower than 2 DIMMs
>Computex May 30th

Thoughts about the Corsair RM750X 750W?
I want a quite PSU, will it do me good?
I have a i5 4460 and a R9 290 4GB, draws around 110W idling I think.
Will it stay in the passive mode even when having it on for like 15 hours?
>>
>>60645178
plat fanless? get a fanless seasonic 450w. i speak for my ax760 80+ platinum that fanless is the go to. i wish my gpu was quieter though...
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RqfrBP
Hypothetical build for my dad with a military theme (hence the case). He's an AMD fan, but isn't too into gaming outside of facebook. Honestly this is probably overkill for him
>>
>>60645178
That much power is unneeded but yeah, if you want it to not stay at low load then go for it
do remember that fanless PSU exist though, if it's quietness you're searching for

>>

Meh it looks fine
>>
>>60645125
These high core i9's are going to be useless for even extreme enthusiast gaming, by the time they are being utilized properly, there will be better and cheaper processors on the market. Just not worth it from a common sense perspective, as IPC will increase and die size will shrink.
>>
>>60645208
consider going g4560 instead
>>
why dont we have a unified socket standard yet? if intel amd ibm and the people behind arm worked on it it would progress the industry tenfold. make it so its not even x86 dependant
>>

what part of AMD fan did you not get?
>>
>>60645205
Seems nice but any other good fanless ones than that? The 400W Seasonic is $170 in Sweden, and that's a bit much for me.

>>60645234
Was the cheapest semi-passive one on the store I looked at. I will look at other stores though. Are the RM series good in general and how low you think I can go while staying passive if we for safety say the PC draws 200W?
>>
>>60645208
wrong if he doesnt game. get a mitx g4560 build and paint the case yourself, he'll love it. its like when my grandparents asked me to build them a great computer i didnt jump to a i5 1050 build, i built them an i3 build in itx and focused on quality and storage

Is it okay to pair 1070 with a cheap motherboard? Is there anything that can go wrong? I'm thinking about getting 1070 for my R5 1600 build. Motherboard is Asrock AB350M Pro4.

But would you say it's bad, I have a EVGA SuperNOVA 750B1 now and I would guess it's worse. At least it sounds much, that's why I want to switch.
>>
>>60645377
And R3 would probably suit better or one of the upcoming Athlon processors.
>>

its not worse in the sense it will fail faster. its a good psu and will run silent till 70% load i believe. thats where buying more wattage comes in to play

>with a cheap motherboard?
Yes, perfectly ok
The PCIe slot is always supposed to deliver the same amount of power (& be able to) regardless of motherboard
And as long as it's not PCIe 1.1 (does that even happen anymore), there won't be any performance problem.
Older gen PCIe slots offer less bandwidth, but it's needs to be really old and not run at 16x for some reason to really affect performance
>>
>>60645486
theyre still making new athlon processors? thats a surprise. binned r3 no doubt

>>60645455
thats not exactly a cheap board in terms of quality. nothing will go wrong on paper. amd and nvidia is a terrible pair though
>>

What did you mean then? I found some more info that said that it would stay passive up to 300W, so it will probably be good.

The AM4 motherboards all say they will support AM4 Athlon Processors, so new AM4 Athlons are coming, likely to do battle with the Pentiums. it'll be an interesting fight to see how Athlon handles the G4560

Can I safely overclock the 1700 using the stock cooler without sending my temps through the roof? Trying to cut about $100-150 from my build, and dropping from the 1700x and an aftermarket HSF to the 1700 would do it pretty well.

Am I giving up any realistic amount of performance/gaining a significant amount of heat by doing so?

>>
>>60646031
8 is more than enough for gaming if you are on a tight budget.
>>
>>60646036
depends on how high of an overclock. The Wraith Spire can handle a decent overclock but it can't handle a full bore overclock
>>
>>60645534
Whats wrong with AMD CPU + NVIDIA GPU? I've seen anons post about this occasionally and no one has offered any explanation as to why this is an issue.
>>
>>60646088
gpu performs worse on amd cpu than intel, its not related to cpu strength either.
>>
>>60646036
Maybe 3.7GHz at best (for an extended full load) but no higher
If we're talking partial load then yeah, mine can handle 3.9 at partial load, but that's not ideal
Please get a cooler if you're serious into overclocking. A $40 one will do great and last you for years. If you're expecting the wraith spire to be made for overclocking you're in for a disappointement.
>>
>>60646088
They don't match well. Or used to, don't know if they patched it already
>>
>>60646122
That's not very true.
The AMD GPU driver isn't as well multithreaded as the Nvidia one is so it tends to bottleneck more lower end CPUs, which makes card perform quite worse than they should.
For i5 / R5 & anything over, it doesn't do any difference.
6+ cores & Nvidia doesn't go well together and can cause a lower GPU utilisation in some rare games, but that's nothing specific to Ryzen. And is so rare that it isn't a relevant issue.
>>

>>60645510
>>60645534
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bgYctJ

I know Ryzen + Nvidia is not an ideal combination but RX 580 are all sold out and there are currently no estimates when new cards arrive. I'm also from Eastern Europe and elecricity here is rather expensive so less power consumption is definitely better.
Also that 1070 is pretty big. Won't sagging be a problem? Are reinforced PCI-E slots useful or is it only marketing trick?
>>

Thats my current build, having some power issues ( i think) it black screens during gaming at ultra sertings, under clocking GPU has helped... Looking to upgrade to something like this maybe. Waiting for Vega to come out before i choose a GPU

On mobile so links might be switched. Any thoughts or suggestions? Im fine if some one can make it cheaper, but i want it to be pretty.
>>
>>60646161
im not talking about amd gpus at all.
>>
>>60646161

I want an RX 570/580 but I can't find one for a reasonable price. I was planning on buying a 1060 because of this. I'm not looking for XTREME gaymen, so I figured a 1060 would work.
>>
>>60646239
That seems very expensive.
Will you make use of the 8 cores over an R5 1600?
That expensive AIO isn't gonna be much cooler than a high-end air cooler (2 - 3°C during full load maybe?), nor it is going to be much cooler than other 120mm AIOs.
Could also downgrade the motherboard too. Any b350 do the job, if it's really quality you want (for some reason?) there are plenty of good b350 motherboard, or you could even downgrade to an Asus x370 Taichi which is among the best x370s
That's a lot of RAM
Could save money by going for a non-samsung SSD
You're not gonna use anywhere near 850w even with an old r9 290. Going to 600w would be much more cost effcient
You're spending $80 on case fans and none of them are 140mm, and that's quite sad to watch.
>>
Is it worth pushing my 1070 any further than 2050mhz core and 8608mhz vram ?

He would actually be able to put together a decent system with the $500 alone for the tower, but he's basically paying for even a subpar budget with about $350-400 left with a monitor.
>>
>>60645534
>amd and Nvidia is a terrible pair

Can we stop the retarded misinformation here. Amd with Nvidia is fine. It's been factually tested that anything that happens to ryzen with Nvidia under dx12 also happens to ryzen with and under dx11. It's just some teething and driver issues which the companies needed to fix and have fixed by now most likely.

It's not clear in the Antec documentation if there's space inside the case for optical + 2.5" if there is than that would be preferable

There wouldn't be any dGPU initially because a 1030 or 750ti aren't going to be all that much better than whatever is on the CPU and don't seem worth it

Something like "ASRock Deskmini" makes much more sense. G4560 probably wont run out of the box, but I believe it can be flashed either in a store, or if you have a 6000-series cpu laying around.

Otherwise, just get like 6100, or something like that.

As many as there are SATA ports;

The limiting factor for amount of SATA ports is the the chipset (Z170, Z270, etc.) While ATX and MicroATX (usually) just build in the max number of SATA ports onto the board, mITX boards are a lot more space constrained and typically offer 2 or 4 SATA ports at most.

AsRock's recently announced X299 mITX motherboard breaks that convention by offering 6 SATA ports.

I'm currently running a 2500k at 4.5ghz, and a 970. Looking to upgrade my rig for gaming at 1440p/144hz. I'll be holding off on the video card upgrade until Volta/Vega, but my CPU/MB and RAM are what i'm working on right now.
Given that AM4 motherboards are going to be supported for longer than Intel's, would it make more sense to upgrade to a Ryzen system and hope next Gen Ryzen has a bit more power to compete with the Intel system? I don't really want to go with the 7700k if the lower core count is going to cause stutter in games over the next couple years.
>>
>>60647256
If you only do gaming and don't care for upgradeability for the CPU,the i7-7700K is the way to go.
If you do any kind of content creation or work outside of gaming, ryzen is advised.

I have a R7-1700 and an RX 570 and play Doom at 1080p Ultra at >115fps.

I'm looking to go for the 1440p 144hz meme too, and everywhere i've looked i've seen people heavily recommend the i7 7700k over ryzen at the moment, because the higher clock speed is useful for pushing the higher framerates

Tested in 1080p so gains at 1440p will be less until you get a GPU that's as CPU bottlenecked at 1440p as a titan X pascal is at 1080p.
I'd say go with 3000 or 3200MHz ram since it's only like 20% more expensive than the cheapest DDR4 and leave it at that.

So I have a build that's a few years old now.

FX8350, XFX R9 290 DD edition.

I have a cooler master hyper 212 evo on the CPU right now. I don't know why but I just got the urge to overclock my shit out of nowhere. Been doing a lot of research lately.

Was playing around with clock speeds and voltage settings. I've started to keep a sharper eye on temps as I never really payed attention before.

My shit was getting pretty hot, 80c range on full load.

Decided to see where it's at on stock settings, went into bios, reset everything to default. It's still getting to 70c or more on full load. Something is not right, it should be cooler considering it's stock clock and voltage.

I realize that hyper evo 212's are pretty shit for any kind of overclocking.

I just want a solid 4.7 ghz without temps getting too crazy. Breathe some life back into this thing. Never realized how CPU intensive Overwatch is, and I'm trying to get the most frames per second I can since I upgraded to a 144hz monitor fairly recently.

So is there a better air cooler than this:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608045

Noctua NH-D15 SSO2 D-Type Premium CPU Cooler, NF-A15 x 2 PWM Fans

Shit seems pretty cash tbqh. I think I'm going to do it. I was looking into AIO coolers, but I still think this is a better option.

td;lr is there a better air cooler for an fx8350, overclocked than a Noctura NH-D15?

I recently upgraded my PC with new hardware, namely a new motherboard and new CPU, and ever since I put it back together I've been experiencing a lot of BSOD's.

The stop code isn't consistent, either, so I don't really know what the issue is. My rig is using:

Intel Core i5-6600K 6M Skylake Quad-Core 3.5 GHz
ASUS Z170-A
EVGA GeForce GTX 1080
CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB

I've been using the same SSD and HDD.

At first I thought it was the chipset driver, because I forgot to install it right away, but I already did a while ago and I'm still having this problem.

The included Wraith cooler is close to being Hyper 212 tier in quality. Paying $30 for a Hyper 212 isn't a significant upgrade that's worthwhile.

Look to ~$50 CPU coolers.
Reeven Justice has good value:

https://www.hardocp.com/article/2016/07/18/reeven_justice_120mm_cpu_air_cooler_review/4

http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/7169/reeven-justice-rc-1204-cpu-cooler-review/index4.html

Additionally, the Thermalright True 140 Direct performed very well for the price in a recent AnandTech article, beating out a comparable Noctua product at thermal loads up to 150W (where the Noctua begins to slightly edge it out due to the larger surface area of the fin stack) at 30% less than the Noctua.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/11407/140-mm-slim-tower-cpu-cooler-roundup/7

Great performance $50 coolers should provide solid thermals at solid acoustic levels, capable of any kind of overclock you want to go for on a 1600X. While you can step up to the massive dual tower heatsinks or all-in-one CLCs, you're paying a lot extra for marginal improvements to temperature and moderate improvements in acoustics.

My non-shitpost answer is to run memtest to check your RAM isn't fucked and see if disabling the c-state power saving options in your BIOS helps anything. You've changed your motherboard, some motherboards and some PSU's don't play well together for some retarded reason with Intel's power saving stuff, even pre-Haswell ones that don't dip the voltages silly low.

A HX750, assuming its working properly, is plenty enough to run a system like that twice over.

It entirely depends on the unit series.
For example, Corsair makes the only good SFX PSUs, and they're of extremely high quality (just a tiny bit off of platinum rating, but because of it being only gold at specific loads, it ends up being only gold).

Silverstons and seasonics options for SFX PSUs all have issues.

Then there's also Corsair Vengeance PSU, which is one of the highest quality PSUs you can find.
There was also XFX Core series, it's outdated now, but it was very high quality.

Is this a good fan controller? My CM Scout only has 3 fans stock. Looking to upgrade my CPU cooler and add a couple more fans while I'm at it.

How much space does Windows 7 OS take up? I want to know how much space I'll need for an SSD.
>>
>>60650806
On a fresh install with SP1, mines is around 25gb.
>>
>>60650806
Take the capacity you're currently thinking of buying and buy twice as much. If you've never had an SSD before you'll shit yourself when you see the difference it makes and wish you had more space.

But, Windows 7 usually burns about 20GB, also take into account the 10%-ish of the drive you'll need to dedicate to servicing bullshit.
>>

Any ways to make this build better without altering the budget too much? I plan on using it for general computer stuff and low-stress gaming (most intense probably being Fallout New Vegas).
Also, could someone recommend a good monitor to pair with it?

I'm trying to make a small htpc for my sister, but I can't get OpenELEC to work at all. It says it installs just fine, but it won't boot past the splash screen.
I've installed Ubuntu twice now, and it runs just fine, but as soon as I try OpenElec again, it locks up at the splash screen.
Running an Intel G3250T cpu
64GB SSD
XFX 6870 gpu
16GB ram
Gigabyte GA-Z97N-WIFI mobo

Losing my goddamned mind here.
I could run Kodi on Ubuntu, but since my sister is tech-tarded, I figure simpler is better, and a small OS that's just for media would keep her from fucking it up too much...

I have a 212 Evo for my i5 2500k, I bought a Ryzen 5 1600 so I guess I need a new cooler for AM4. Should I get liquid cooler?
>>

Air cooler is much more cost effective, so just get a nicer air cooler.

>>60651581
No idea.

>>
Is a 212 Evo good enough for 7700k overclocking?
>>
>>60651596
The 212 evo will work on Ryzen but you need the bracket from Cooler Master.
On that note, the stock cooler that comes with the 1600 is actually decent and can even handle a mild overclock to around 3.7 Ghz. If you want a full bore overclock to 3.9 or 4.0 Ghz, THEN you need an aftermarket cooler

This isn't Intel. The stock coolers aren't automatically garbage.

>>
>>60651638
>>60651730
No it's not unless you enjoy having a 90°C CPU.

I have a 7700K and a H7 and on stock I have occasional spikes up to 75 in MAX load since Summer has started here (usually it never really hits 70 the rest of the year). If I don't vsync and go crazy on the FPS (aka 100% GPU usage) temps were in the 77°C, I'm sure I'd try now it'd rise to 80°C.

So with an even worse cooler and overclocked? To begin with, why do you want to overclock? Are you playing 4K or something?

Understandable. Honestly, I'd recommend aiming for the best cooler you can then. I don't regret my H7 at all, it does a good job, and generally my CPU hovers 50-60s degrees so it's fine, but if I had known that CPU was running that hot I'd have invested into something really better.

No

Ryzen 5 1600 with an RX 480/580. The 1060 can't compete simply due to its lack of vram. If you have to get an nvidia card, get a 1050ti, or a 1070. Everything inbetween though isn't as competitive.

>>
>>60652945
Despite the 480/580 being good cards, they will be overpriced due to crypto jews buying them in bulk to mine their coins. So they will be overpriced or not in stock. If you can wait a few months, get the 480/580.
>>
>>60652964
>call out an Intel shill

I was considering an i5/RX470 build before Ryzen came out. I go where the best performance for the money is. That doesn't make me a shill.

>>60652986
The 580 is overpriced right now. I have been able to find older god 470/480 cards though
>>
>>60653000
>I have been able to find older god 470/480 cards though
Why not just wait a few more months than get the 580? The 580 is just a rebranded 480 that performs better at about the same cost (once the jews stop fucking with it).
>>
>>60652945
>The 1060 can't compete simply due to its lack of vram.
lol, 6GB isn't enough now? damn stupid shill.
>>
>>60653021

>>60653026
The 6GB is only a few bucks cheaper at the moment than an 8GB 580. Not worth it. And the 3GB version competes with the 4GB 570.
Fuck off nVidia shill.

Do I wish AMD had better cards for the high end? Of course. It would force actual competition again. Competition is always good for the consumer.
>>
>>60652945
>The 1060 can't compete simply due to its lack of vram.
Though the 1060 is overall slightly slower compared to the 580, it's not due to VRAM limitations.
Extremely rare for a game today to use more than 4GB. Unheard of to use 6. Though some games do appropriate the VRAM for use, it doesn't actually get filled.

Not true, RX GPUs are completely overpriced for what they are, yet you are still trying your hardest to make sure everyone in this thread making a new computer has to buy one. Don't even call me a shill when I own a Ryzen myself. If you want to be credible learn yourself some objectivity sense.

Fuck off. The 1060 is cucked to high heaven. To get it clocking right you have to physically modify the fucking PCB to bypass the firmware restraints.

There's good reason these cards keep selling out.
Given the performance difference, usable lifespan, hardware ware, and software constraints. You can't seriously recommend a 1060 unless it's on a significant sale price.

My cousin had bought a FreeSync monitor a month ago on sale in preparation for an AMD build. Neither of us were anticipating the RX 500 cards to be sold out/gobbled up by miners by the time he had earned enough money for the rest of his build though.

Should he forsake the FreeSync functionality of his monitor and just grab a 1060 3GB/6GB? He's only interested in 1080p gaming for now. He doesn't really want to wait for Vega and wants something functional for now since he just graduated uni.
