My university is giving me $1500 to buy a laptop. Any recommendations?

Will probably be running debian + i3. Going to be doing a computer science based course. Looking for something slim, comfortable, with good battery life.

Yes, I've looked at thinkpads and shit. But I don't think it'd be very smart to only spend 1/3 of the money, y'know?

Also, general laptop thread I guess.

XPS seems to be the leading choice here.

I'd love to spend the money on hookers and blow, but it's sort of a present your receipt and claim up to $1500 type of deal
>>
>>60638941

Just get an XPS 13.

1080p version for battery life and outdoor readability.

And don't get that retarded convertible in your picture.
>>
>>60638941
Just out of curiosity, why is your uni giving you $1,500 and is it specially for a laptop or?
>>
.X1 carbon you wanker.
Also, Dell has been making some nice stuff lately.

I use a W520 with an 850 pro and it feels pretty god tier. I'll probably never have to upgrade.

XPS 13 or 15, Surface book, or Macbook Pro. If you care about battery life, why would you install Linux? If you're getting a windows laptop just install the ubuntu bash shell on windows if you need it for your CS courses.

You mean your uni is giving you back $1500 of the $200000 you gave them? What a guy. Literally a saint.

Right on, carry on then. CS?

Just weighing the pros and cons, Lenovo lost their edge when they switched keyboards from (Praise be) IBM's holy keyboard.
They're both good, but always get the LCD upgrade on the Lenovo laptops. Their TN panels are awful.
>>
>>60639030

Sorta.

The XPS 13/15 has been the ideal choice for a few years now. Nobody else wants to compete.

2015 macbook pro?

BUT dell QA is shit and it's a lottery to get a unit without issues. Pay for premium warranty so you know you can just keep on returning them until you get a good one.
>>
>>60639072
I actually already have a surface pro 4. I use Bash for Windows quite often (rarely cmd/powershell) on that machine as well as my home Windows desktop.

So imo it makes sense to 'diversify' with a linux laptop. If I have to use windows shit I'll just use my surface pro.

> or Macbook Pro
I'd like to avoid apple like the cancer it is.

>If you care about battery life, why would you install Linux?
Important question though: is Linux less efficient with battery than Windows? You seem to imply this.

Dell Latitude E74x0. Latest is 7480 I believe (Kaby Lake). XPS 13 is ok if you want a smaller laptop, but they might have those buzzing issue, and business laptop build quality > consumer laptop BQ.

T470 is ok as well, but modern Thinkpad are hit or miss, even the the T/W/X top end business series.
>>
>>60639288

I'm using the battery life results from the same website. Obviously different test setups will result in different end results.

As they're both from the same website they have the same testing and thus we can see the delta between the two.

In any case "30 minutes" is hyperbole for something that lasts 13 hours.

>Mil spec

Ok? We were talking about battery right?
>>
>>60639350
No we are talking about why the t470 is the only choice.

I'm looking for something that's small(9-11 inch range) and is relatively optimal performance/price-wise.

I figured out that hybrid laptop/tablets with windows 10 would be the the best thing for me.

Can anybody recommend one of those at up to ~$400? Or should I forget about those if I don't want to pay more? I think the "heaviest" thing I want to put on this thing is Atmel Studio.

What I figured out was Lenovo Yoga 300, the N3700 model.

Linux drains the battery for me, literally drains compared to windows, but I'm linux illiterate so that might have something to do with it

Never understood this. Why don't they just get a deal with a manufacturer and get a bulk buy order for all those who "need" a laptop for their course?

Would cost them half of that. Fucking idiots.
>>

Just plug it in you plebs.

>>
>>60641507
Never got into this kind of thing but I've had a situation where I've had to pick the model to "buy in bulk" and I'll tell you how it ends.

Because usually the committee picked laptop is going to be shit and it won't fit the users needs.

Different people want different laptops in different weights and sizes. Carrying 4 kilogrammes heavy, 19" laptop on your back doesn't mean shit for average man, but 150cm big skinny female who carries small(fit for the size so to speak) handbags will have to buy another bag for it and the weight will tier her needlessly. Some people want big screens, others want them to be compact.

Some people will want apple stuff and will occupy your dean's office while twerking in rhythm of shitty rap music videos(males will also twerk) if you won't give them it. Others will kill you if you with their trusty battleaxe they use for larping give them apple device.

Some people will be more concerned with getting higher-end processor in their computers(either because of dumbassery or because they actually need strong CPU and don't give a fuck about GPU), others will opt for weaker CPU and stronger graphics card.

Some people will want good quality screen, others won't care about screen as long as it's bright and white letters on on black/black letters on white are well visible.

We can do it all day.
>>
>>60641654
>will tier her
tire*
>>
>>60641634
How about you just enjoy the park without being glued to a screen?

If you need to do something that absolutely cannot wait, then don't go to the fucking park. Instead stay at home and do it, then leave and go to the park afterwards.
>>
>>60641592
My university just built a new building for the EE/CS department and fucked up the power outlets. There's only enough for an eighth of a normal sized class to plug in. People who leave their houses have to use their laptops on battery power all the time, without advanced knowledge. It's nice if the laptop doesn't die after 45 minutes.
>>
>>60641654

>some people want this
>some people want that
>some people like bigger screens
Mate, that's just faggots being picky.

It's a University, an institution for education. They should be fucking thankful they're getting a free computer. If they don't like it, they can get a job and buy their own.
>>
>>60641721
Anon you don't get it.

If you give them the model you pick, 50% of them will end up buying a different one that fits their own tastes.

Believe me, the company I worked in once figured out that they're going to do this shit too, and it ended up in people selling their "work" laptops and buying the ones that fitted them.
>>
>>60638941
Seriously consider a macbook. Don't discard Apple as "cancer" before you've personally investigated. Under Linux Bebeing unable to reliably open standard Office files is going to cause you big problems; you would need to maintain a Windows VM and copy files back and forth.

with macos you still have unix but also have standard commercial suites. There are tons of third party window management tools to add tiling etc.

I moved recently and found my uncle's old laptop he had before he passed away. If not? $500 for a nice laptop, prioritise portability and battery life. Atleast 1080p screen. Spend the rest on a nice desktop.
If so? $600 for a nice laptop, prioritise portability and battery life. Atleast 1080p screen. Save the rest for a rainy day.

Trust me. Was in your position.
Friend got an xxxmlg gamur laptop for £1500, I got a nice used t460p and a new battery for £600.

I had an XPS 13 and returned it, had annoying coil whine, the keyboard was shit and I hated the rubberized "carbon fiber" material on the inside. Other than that the size was nice and build quality felt solid.

I'd look into the newest X1 Carbon or the Spectre x360, or even the Macbook Pro if you don't mind the keyboard.
>>

>Yes, I've looked at thinkpads and shit. But I don't think it'd be very smart to only spend 1/3 of the money, y'know?

You didn't look at newer machines then I guess. Looking at some Ultrabooks, My picks would be as follow:

Lelnovo X1C 5th gen
DELL XPS 13
HP Specter 13 (convertible)

If you go trough EPP or refurb store for Thinkpads, you can get a pretty dope X1C for the price, cheaper than equivalent competition.

I found a good video yesterday rounding up your options for a 12-14 light laptop. Of course, nothing beat looking at them in person tho.
