Shouldn't every program be designed around the ability for users (especially if the product is paid for,) to use it without much thought, or does this have some other use case which I'm blind to? Sure, people are stupid and should learn the program they're using, but I don't see how intuitive design is bad.

expert computer users are more productive than clueless beginners for fundamentally good reasons. experts have more skills. skill is not an injustice that ought to be corrected!

in many cases, empowering clueless people to use computers only enables them to harm themselves, like the dozens of stupid kids who have posted private information on Facebook

designers should focus on developing skills in beginners, and transforming them into experts. in particular, this means that you have to believe your user is capable of being taught and learning things like a human being. it's patronizing shlock to treat your users like consumer idiots and call it "accessibility"

i started using linux in 2006. i received my phd in cs last week. arch is great, because it's teaching kids that they can learn to have agency over computers. conversely, you imagine them as pic related.

it's not hard to try a door both ways! this disrespect for human intelligence is terrible pedagogy, but it's an assumption throughout modern design. modern design doesn't value teaching at all, perhaps because clueless consumers are better customers?

doing 10 steps instead of 1 to do the same thing will absolutely make you smarter if the 10 steps TEACH you how the 1 step works internally. you might even try rearranging the steps to do something new, i.e. how most people learn to program.

programming is exactly the kind of skill that is objectively valuable for users to learn, but opportunities to teach programming are consciously obfuscated by modern designers, who think that users shouldn't have to learn to program or even know what a file is. you're not doing user a favor by keeping them in plato's allegorical cave, you're just enabling their exploitation by more capable parties

i mean it was kind of standardized, it doesn't just refer to something being higher definition than normal, SD = 480p, HD = 720p, Full HD = 1080p. Then you have UHD, 2K, 4K (cinema 4k and what consumers call 4k but its actually quad hd...) i mean it's confusing but HD does mean 720p.

what annoys me is people asking if things have a "retina display" even when they're not apple products. Apple are very good at marketing and they have made "Retina" basically become synonymous with "higher DPI than usual"

The whole push for everything to be higher specced for no reason, even if it diminishes the quality of the product, or makes it harder to find a laptop you want because people only compare specs, so companies don't care about build quality. Or fucking gaming aesthetic on everything high end, and people still buying it instead of voting with their wallets. Le mindless consumer xd

the majority of reasons is that these terms are so overused they've become a cliché, where """programmers""" who put them on their resumés/Medium blogs/marketing copy did so to either beef up their non-existent qualifications, or to trick employers into thinking what they can do are more impressive than what they actually can do.

then everyone started doing it and it became a sign of somebody who is both creatively dead and possibly a millenial, both cultures that are infecting the tech industry like a cancer.

the rest of the stuff is either overused industry buzzwords (the cloud, webapp, "smart"), a sign of a quaint and boring person ("i turn coffee into code", and pretty much anything to do with coffee), and general bitching about things you don't like (DAE hate loonix :DDD)

I now realize I kept talking myself into just accepting these terms whenever they confused me rather than actually looking them up and into the products/people that use them.
My generation truly is cucked, because most of them do that, just take a surface level knowledge of something and act like they know everything, instead of digging deeper in the pursuit of true knowledge.
