because the window titles are more important than the icon most of the time

I have my taskbar on top. I use shortcuts to open programs. I also use webbrowser-shortcuts. having everything on the same place makes it easier for me. If I didn't have this reason, I would have it on the side.

If you pin a program you can just press win+(position #) to open it. So the first pinned program is win+1, the second win+2, etc.
At least in Windows 7, I don't know if that still works in 10. Or what happens if you have more than 9 pinned items.
