How good is this thing, for note taking, and programming?
Good but expensive. If all you're looking for is something for note taking and programming, just get a used business-class laptop.

I like carrying as little as possible, and OneNote is a godsend.
I had one for a year, but gave it to my little sister. It's nice and all but I prefer a regular laptop for programming and a paper notebook for notes.

ditch the heavy brick laptop, ditch the notepad, ditch the tablet, convert your textbooks to your pdf reader, literally replaces everything in your bag.
seriously get something with a proper keyboard if you intend on taking notes and program
As a med student, my SP3 is great, I take all my notes on it, but bear in mind that the software is far from perfect.

Firstly you will want something that is not completly locked take a thinkpad,xps,macbook all of these are great for programming. Surface is good for notes, surfacebook is meh in everyway.
