Because they choose the correct market. This is where Microsoft failed. Microsoft believed that making everyone depend on them with dirty tactics was going to be the way to secure money forever and they didn't care about apple havin the 5% of the marketshare. The problem is that having 95% of the martekshare doesn't equals having 95% more profit.

The big difference is that apple at least is honest about what they do so the people who buys their products is people willing to spend in the first place (independently if they actually have a lot of money or not but they know what to expect). Microsoft on the other side is now trying to milk their users against their will but people will alway look for ways to not pay and work around the artificial limitations. Now they're trying to go the apple way by trying to jail their users slowly, they're actually not being that subtle but their fans will be like "nah, Microsoft would never do that and if they do i'm going to find a way to do what i'm want" anyway. The sad part is that with their anticompetitive measures it'll be more and more hard for them to get business partners unless they bribe them because now every company is wary about them.
