I'm using CAT5E actually. I don't need or have anything that supports 10Gbps transfers, and don't think I will in the near future.

At the point when I do, I'll just run wires through my house again. It's only a half-day project, and will be even quicker now that I already have 5E run and can just use the existing cables to pull the new ones.

No residential ISP is set up for jumbo frames and you'll be limited on their end.

Not to mention the only residential internet service that would be worthwhile on that sort of setup would be Comcast's 2gbps service, and you're hardly approaching the limit of 10gbps equipment on only 2gbps.

I've gotten a hair over 112MB/s in real world use, but you're basically right.

Still wont matter for 99% of people. 1gbps is fast enough to move a terabyte in under 3 hours.
And if you're regularly moving around multiple terabytes, you're far from a normal person.

I use CAT5e on my 10GbE network because I don't need the distance, it's cheaper and CAT5 is stranded core, not solid so more reliable too.
Ever work with CAT6A or CAT7? Freaking nightmare. It's stiff and has nylon guide wires in it to resist flexing as solid core is liable to break if you bend it. Easily 2x+ the thickness of CAT5e.

My home network I use Cat 5E/6. Really only times I push the full 1GB is during server backup jobs. Mostly it's limited to 100 Megabit due to my streaming media device (s). My Wifi devices are limited to G/N so they don't even hit the 100 Meg limit. Internet is 10 meg d/1mb up.

Doing large data restore will be a pain in the ass if I ever have to do it over 1GB eithernet. I've got roughly 9TB of data backed up via drive image so to restore it all would take days. It's all backed up to a nas and external usb 3 drive. Yeah I know that it's a relatively painless process, just tell the program to restore to new volume and walk away but still, that's several days with out my vids or porn.

It depends, technically for service, no it isn't needed, however the online configurator will occasionally force you to either buy one, or rent one for $10 a month.

I'd recommend just buying one from them if it forces you to, it's $150 (15 months worth of rental) so for a 2 year contract you still save $90 over the 2 year period by just buying their router.


You only need their router for trouble shooting through their tech support, if you're tech savvy you can hook up whatever router you want. Even custom PFsense boxes are fine.
