10 years ago, Japan had tons of computers and other great electronics companies but these days, they seem to have been killed off by chinks and gooks. WTF happened?

How do we make Japan tech great again?

>>

Try 20, or 25.
>>
They're stuck somewhere 20 years ago.
>>
The japs are still the best at coming up with the ideas, the chinks just take their ideas and use a combination of cheaper materials, slave labour and disturbingly lax pollution laws to make the same thing at quarter the price.
>>
I miss their laptop computers, cool foldable phones, the design of their websites (see niconico video <3 ) etc. Such cool shit we'll never have. Google and siblings produces piles of steamin g shit compared to solid jap tech. Even jap cars are tougher.

No they're not, and that's the problem. That's why innovation has stifled. The same old ass businessmen who run all these companies won't ever retire and won't ever diverge from the same old shit.

That's why they've fallen out of popularity.

Yep, noticed the same thing too. Japan doesn't even make their own phones anymore, it's all Korea or China, at least in that region

When it comes to computers, still mainly China or America (Made in China, lol)

Rice cookers are all Korean, television sets are either Korean or some obscure company, etc.

The only decent thing Japan has made recently are ANC headphones (pic related), automobiles to a certain extent, and arguably PS4

It's very sad because I really love the way Japanese design their electronics, has a distinct hi-caliber feel to all of them
>>
Korean and Chinese slave workers are cheaper than Japanese workers.

>>60597291
Are we talking specifically about consumer electronics or what? OP just said 'technology'.

>>
>He thinks Japanese technology went off the radar 10 years ago

Maybe, but it started with the end of the post-war economic miracle ending in a recession, making consumer companies less bullish about selling internationally.

>This economic miracle was the result of post-World War II Japan and West Germany benefiting from the Cold War.[dubious ] It occurred chiefly due to the economic interventionism of the Japanese government and partly due to the aid and assistance of the U.S.[1]
>>
>WTF happened?
You stopped looking.
Panasonic makes batteries for everybody, and they make all sorts of great electronics including the best wintel laptops in the world. Sony is everywhere, as is Toshiba. Makita tools have a cult following due to their high quality and tool selection. Seiko and Casio are probably the most popular watch brands in the world. Japanese cars are everywhere. Boeing uses a fair amount of Japan manufactured parts in their aircraft. Japan also makes great amateur radios if you're a gay nerd like me who's into that stuff.

ANC is usually a meme most people don't need or can't use anyways. There's a thread on Reddit every now and then about some cunt buying noise cancelling headphones and complaining because they won't block his dog barking or loud neighbors blasting nigger.
The Momentum 2 Wireless have ANC but I'm not sure how good it is.

You need to look into long term user reviews to learn about any potential failures like the headband snapping.
Even on Amazon they have 4.5 stars and at on of 1 star reviews mention the exact same headband snapping issue.
The question is do you feel lucky enough to not be affected by this? because Sony already stated they do not stand behind their product and any breakage is on you

The Japanese just haven't really made anything very new and very good in a while. It seems like they advance rather slowly nowadays 'cause their old way doesn't cut it anymore.

Kinda like what happened to Nokia: they were always sometimes slow in jumping on new trends (it took them ages to release flip phones, too) so they practically crumbled when iPhones and Android phones got good. Same probably happened with Japanese phones: suddenly everyone wanted something different and they reacted too slowly, then iPhone had already conquered their market when the truth hit em.

Maybe something similar happened to other kinds of electronics as well. Plus the whole price thing, China is cheaper and so on and can nowadays do a lot of the products without outside help.

You always hear horrible things about Japanese work culture, too: and I don't just mean the overwork thing, but also that they have shitloads of totally useless office workers who they make do inefficient shit like copy spreadsheets by typing them in. Their culture is kind of appearances-based, so maybe that has something to do with it: it is important to have the people looking busy and working, whether they're doing anything worthy or not.

>>
>>60601101
Well, we also haven't all innovated a whole new world of products in Europe, it's just still simply doing the old shit well and only a bunch of new things / improvements?

But unlike with Japan, I find it fucking easy to do business -even as a small time retail customer- with most European or US companies.

You want a random piece of furniture ordered from overseas? Mostly just ask to give the company manufacturing it to establish some quote for shipping it and a method for paying it. Even various retailers will do this kind of stuff.

Trying to do this with Japan? Ugh. Better find a inside-Japan proxy shipping service in advance - they're far more often than not just going to refuse to ship anything internationally.
>>

Leica hasn't been relevant in decades.

MILC and DSLR are still orders of magnitude better than smartphones.

Smartphones only really replace point and shoot cameras. Yes, that's what a lot of people used, but never really the professionals and hobbyists - and that's the same today.
>>
>>60601136
and while I do count Leica as one, I'm guessing the Japs dominate cameras 'cause cameras evolve really slowly and you can really utilise having a lot of experience making them

Obviously not smartphones either, but often really rather expensive cinema and broadcast cameras.

Hobbyists may be using MILC or more modest digital cinema cameras and enthusiast camcorders and such. (Not generally a broadcast cameras since some $100k camera with a up to a $150k lens isn't inside normal people's hobby budget).

>>60601216

Virtually all the media, ads, product catalogs, porn and so on that you see is produced with these.

How do... we? We make it better? Anon, this isn't 2ch. No one under here has any reason to try and want to improve the quality of electronics coming out a country that isn't theirs. There's no loyalty to Japan that any of us owe. Who is selling us the shit we want? Cool, then maybe we'd want them to improve their shit because we're buying it up. But the whole premise of your point is that people are buying less and less of Japanese made goods and buying other east Asians.

If you wanted to make Japanese tech 'great again' you'd have to move to Japan and somehow start trying to influence public opinion to make the LDP create more tech jobs in japan and incentive companies to have the factories at home instead of in China. So, essentially raise taxes to give it to the companies just so that they'll let some poor sap work in their factories whose paycheck will contribute to that company again later so.

The Japanese already didn't like the increase in VAT. They're not going to like having to pay more for basic electronics just so they can feel good about Sony TVs being made at home.

Modern electronics are a numbers game.

The average consumer will buy the $400 1080p Samsung TV over the $800 1080p Sony TV.

It doesn't matter that the Samsung has a green tint and shit speakers, a single rca input, and undersized capacitors designed to blow the week after the warranty ends. It has the required "number" and that is all that matters.

Same thing with laptops and cellphones. People pick a number they want (ghz, ram, resolution, etc) then pick the cheapest option with it.

No one actually reads reviews or does research to find the best product anymore. They go for the cheapest that means their bare minimum needs.

And this makes sense, to a degree, most electronics will be outdated or break (electronics repair? hah!) within a year or two and need to be replaced. Why should they bother?

In Japan they will have you a new product the same day if something goes wrong.

Why is it the consumer gets fucked in the U.S. by everyone all the time, and no one seems to care?

Pros:
Looks nice
Decent build quality (from what I've heard)
Can display seconds and date (Original G757 can only display one at a time)
Full face illumination (Original G757 has a tiny incandescent bulb on the left side of the face)
Cons:
Original G757 looks better
Screen supposedly will wear out after 7 years
Even more unobtanium than original G757s

When big retailers like BB, WM etc.. Started to sell electronics, the smaller stores with actually knowledgeable staff all closed doors. then nobody were left to tell clients what models were better than others, exept price and publicity.

I hate big retailers because they aren't any better than online stores, just more convenient.

haven't really noticed this lately, except maybe for screen size but hey that actually makes sense as it really affects how the phone feels to use

even megapixels of the camera seem to matter less than years ago, I'd guess it is because every phone has a high number nowadays

people seem to be more concerned with brands, like they want a samsung because they had a samsung before and thus buy the samsung that fits their budget, or they had a samsung before, hated it and now want something else

I can't speak as to the quality and innovation of Japanese technology, for all I know it's probably still up there.
What I do know is their design took a massive nose dive, ditching aesthetics in favor of cheap looking components.
Look at the Japanese audio components from the 70s, 80s, hell even into the 90s. Look at anything after that period, it's indistinguishable from cheap Chinese crap.Back then it was about competition, trying to outdo your competition both in terms of performance, new features and yes, killer looks.
Look at the brands that were competing
Marantz
Onkyo
Sony
Technics
JVC
Fisher
Yamaha
Nakamichi
Sharp
Kenwood

It brings a tear to my eye but instead of crying about it I'm quietly collecting what I can afford.
tldr you can't make it great again, you can only collect what made it great before these items disappear forever

>The otaku spend their time as avaricious collectors of goods and trading information with other otaku. In shunning away from mainstream standards of sociability, sexuality, and career success, the act of maniacal consumption becomes their raison d’être. They cannot relate with other people if not commenting upon these cultural goods. Culture — most of which must be purchased and enjoyed as object (even when it is just physical media holding content) — is the great satisfier of their deepest desires.

>The end result is that the otaku and yankii have an almost inelastic demand for their favorite goods. They must consume, no matter the economic or personal financial situation. They may move to cheaper goods, but they will always be buying something. Otherwise they lose their identity. While normal consumers curb consumption in the light of falling wages, the marginal otaku and yankii keep buying. And that means the markets built around these subcultures are relatively stable in size.

"The Japanese established an Institute of Population Problems as early as 1939. Back then the worry was over-population, and that continued to be the case through a postwar baby boom and into the 1950s. There were policies to discourage population growth.
In the 1960s thinking turned to the problems that might arise from a declining population, beginning it was calculated in the 1990s. In fact Japan’s population peaked in 2008 and is now falling by about a quarter million a year. Fertility rate is low, ranked 211 out of 224 nations. Median age is high at 46.1, tied with Germany for second place in the world, behind Monaco.

Main point here: The Japanese have been doing the long-term thinking about demographics that we haven’t been doing; and they’ve been doing it for 76 years. What have they concluded from all that thinking? Well, here’s a thing they have not concluded: They have not concluded that mass immigration is the solution to their demographic problems. They believe they can keep their standard of living — one of the world’s highest — maintain their technological advantages, and manage their national debt, without importing millions of foreign workers. There is no constituency in Japan favouring mass immigration. In Japan, even business moguls are patriotic."
>>
>>60606988
> their standard of living — one of the world’s highest
Usually ranked somewhere between 20-30 on GDP per capita (nominal / PPP) metrics, and lower on income per hour worked metrics.

Seems like they are below most of the first world "mass immigration" countries - maybe they are not doing the optimal thing.
>>
>>60607109
>GDP per capita
Literally meaningless to the common man. GDP is good for knowing how strong country's economy is. GDP per capita and average wages are just for bragging rights.

Even if GDP measured standard of living, which it doesn't, that would still be pretty good.

They're basically a top 20 country. And all without committing national suicide via ethnic replacement.

Japan with 40 million less Japanese people will still be Japan. The same cannot be said for countries that voluntarily surrender their nation and their institutions and let masses of foreigners supplant them to where their country is no longer their country.
>>
>>60607215
>Still I don't doubt some Scandinavian countries are ahead of them on this.
Moves them up to rank 15/18 or so:

Behind many of the first world "mass immigration" countries.

>>60607284
Well, people also made quality of life indices and so on on. Rank 30 there:
https://www.numbeo.com/quality-of-life/rankings_by_country.jsp

And actually GDP and GDP (PPP) per capita are indicators anyhow, even if you can't use them alone.

The idea that there is something good about some stop on immigration because the overall ~20th ranked country does it is kinda weak when the 1-20 ranked countries mostly do have significant immigration.

Nah, few mass immigration countries above them, a lot below; few countries without mass immigration above them, a lot below them.
This data doesn't support the claim that it's statistically beneficial to have mass immigration.

Actual answer here. Lived in Japan for 15 years; moved back to the States six months ago.

>Japanese people view computers and consumer electronics on the same level as large appliances - have a huge "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality and discourage tinkering around/modifying things.
>Japanese people are overworked to the point of literal exhaustion and death. When they come home, they don't want to be reminded of technology, so their leisure time is spent either drinking, sleeping, or consuming media
>Japan took a very long time to adapt to the internet and cloud-based services, so many businesses are still paper-based and view Email has a gimmick.
>The Japanese population is aging and not reproducing. Bosses/authority figures are becoming older and more out-of-touch by the year, and simply don't understand certain modern concepts or innovations, resulting in a lot of pitches and prototypes being rejected and dismissed.

Have you even been to China? The pollution literally blocks out the sun.
>>
Do you people not know your history?

There's a reason Western culture was taken over by Japanese some decades ago. People literally used to believe Japan was going to take over the world with its business. They were so rich they started buying up American companies all over the place.

Then the Japanese bubble economy literally crashed and they haven't fully recovered to this day.

That's all there is to it.

basically this- they were the China of their day by reverse-engineering everything and raising their standard of living right out of the manufacturing economy. The same thing is happening in China, but Chinese """"culture"""" is trash. They pollute, keep their currency artificially low, and will soon be dealing with massive employment issues once automation takes off.

You can expect to see a lot of wealth leave China once their "bubble" bursts. Look no further than Australia and Hongcouver.

Japs always had this adamant close minded attitude towards business and acception of foreign concepts. It's just that the bubble fooled them into thinking they were doing things right.

While I have respect for their island mentality I can't say that I see it leading to success with the globalization trend

>financial arm? what do they do with finances?
The Zaibatsu is a structured business relation popular with Japanese companies.

They create a group of companies that deal with each other first by choice. The build around a central banking institution that all financial actions go through. With a hugely diverse horizontal and vertical integration the build a group that's able to weather most market changes.

They also engage in cross ownership with different companies owning parts of other companies that own parts of other companies that might own parts of the first company. This creates a tight integration of ownership and profit sharing.

Sony makes most of it's money with it's banking arm that deals with the group of companies built around it.

Won't happen unless already fully developed for other applications. Better adjusted people don't want something so embarrassing and bulky. Losers will forever continue to move the goalposts and won't early adopt something expensive that isn't quite there. They don't want sex. They want the validation of a real human wanting to have sex with them. If you're not already using a Hitachi or other tool on your boyclit, you're not going to buy a sexbot.

Last I heard it was actually their insurance making them the most profit.

But yea, everything is supported by the zaibatsu's central bank and they will bail out arms that get in trouble.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5Ac7ap_MAY

The Japanese economy was hobbled deliberately when it was looking like they would overtake the West. It's is beyond unreasonable to believe that a people as conservative as the Japanese would voluntarily shake up their fiscal policies as radically as they did even though their current path was rocketing them to the top.

Don't forget TRRRS input / stereo audio in. AFAIK Nokia / HMD Global is the only other company releasing phones with stereo audio in. I think it's absurd that it's not a standard feature of smartphones especially considering the MSRPs of the flagships, but that's normies for you.
>>
>>60621630
I was talking about the hypothetical nexus/pixel by sony, anon, those phones have never featured an SD slot, of course sony will never remove the SD slot nor the 3.5mm jack on their xperia phones because 1) they also sell headphones and sd cards and 2) everyone and their grandma listens to their asmr loli armpit pussy recordings on the subway on their way to school/job and they gotta store that shit on a external device in case the police comes around.
>>
>>60621663
I also mean internal mics, or any other means of recording in stereo without USB mics which probably won't work with nearly every shitty Play Store Android app anyway. I'm just flustered that people are doling triple-digit $ for AV recorders that are incapable of recording audio in stereo.
