Cool, just remember that if you ever want to switch from your existing jessie install all you need to do is replace the package sources in sources.list with the devuan ones, run
apt-get update
apt-get install devuan-keyring
apt-get dist-upgrade

and then reboot.

Reposting:

I'm using Linux Mate 17.1 Sarah, built on Ubuntu Xenial. I need to update a program called unar, but the dev only made it available for Yakkety and above. See here: https://pkgs.org/download/unar
Notice how there's no 1.10 for Xenial? Yeah.

So in my infinite wisdom I decided to download the version for Yakkety and see if I could install it, and it calls for a package "libicu57" (see pic), but checking the package manager only shows up to "libicu55" and their site http://site.icu-project.org/download is too full of technical stuff for me to make sense of. Hoping someone can tell me if it's actually possible to get libicu updated to 57 or above and thus get unar 1.10 working on Xenial.

Also, as a last note, here's unar's site https://unarchiver.c3.cx/commandline notice the section that says how to compile manually, I'm thinking should I just try doing that from the start? Never compiled anything before.

tl;dr how to update unar to 1.10.1 on Linux Mate (Xenial)?

Not to defend Muslims but in the west, it really is their choice to wear burkhas. The European caliphate hasn't been established quite yet so they don't get stoned if they go out uncovered in public. They choose to wear it because they were taught that women who don't are sluts and whores and they don't place high value on being sluts like western women do.

The amount of pressure from the islamic "communities" on them to wear them makes it a weighted choice. Furthermore i wasnt actually refering to muslims exclusively but rather to those who view as a liberating choice. You say yourself the biased view that is implanted into them.

>>
>>60595938
more than just binary blobs. The amount of hex droplets within the blobs make encryption a joke on systemd
>>
>>60595902
Systemd is a new init system for Linux, and it works pretty well, most major distros use it now, but it does a lot of different things and it's tightly coupled so you can't really use part of it. Also makes it hard to replace.
>>
>this whole thread again
oh dear holy jesus christ on the cross
>>
>>60595973
They're already working on testing to be ready for the next release, it'll get released after stretch gets released which will come out who knows when.
>>
>>60595982
The kernel of the GNU/Linux desktop is called the Linux kernel.
>>
>>60596029
The expression “the Linux kernel” can easily be misunderstood as meaning “the kernel of Linux” and implying that Linux must be more than a kernel. You can avoid the possibility of this misunderstanding by saying or writing “the kernel, Linux” or “Linux, the kernel”.
>>
>>60595902
The problems people have with systemd are mainly ideological (doesn't follow the unix philosophy of "do one thing and do it well") but also based out of security concerns (one program doing so many things is a significant attack vector) as well as other things such as its use of binary log files and weird Windows-style error messages. Also Poettering is an asshole who once had to be taught how the rm command works.

Your problem happened before that, at "could not mount disk at /mnt-system. Starting debugging shell". Bad image? Have you verified the image's checksum? Try flashing it again, or some other distro/version.
>>
>>60597733
This is the second distro I've tried, maybe the problem is hardware related?
>>
>>60597748
Maybe. It's weird because a live system normally wouldn't even be trying to mount your hard drives at that point, or automatically at all, so that disk it's failing to mount should be its own filesystem. It's not unheard of for a filesystem to be corrupted and fail to mount, but a freshly-flashed live USB image? Weird.

Are you using the same USB drive in all your attempts? Maybe that's what's borked.
>>
>>60597837
Yeah, same flash drive. I guess that might be the problem, or maybe I'm using Rufus wrong.
>>
>>60597856
>or maybe I'm using Rufus wrong
Oh, I see, converting ISO images to USB images. That could be the problem indeed, I've created many an unbootable drive with unetbootin back in the day.

Try using native USB images to skip that step. At a glance I see no mention of USB or hybrid images in the knoppix downloads page. Debian live uses hybrid images - thanks to some clever trick, the same image is valid for burning to a CD or flashing to a USB drive. I'm quite sure Xubuntu does too as I've been flashing their .iso images with dd just fine. These are just the ones I know of and regularly use.

Bought a new laptop (XPS 15) and since I'm unwilling to put up with W10, I'm going to try my first Linux distro (chose Ubuntu Mate).
However, multiple installation attempts in booting from USB have resulted in "fatal error" as it's unable to install the bootloader. All I can do at this point is shut down as the error menu doesn't register click or keyboard selections.

Is this a known error with a fix?

When they spread misinformation by changing “GNU” to “Linux”, and call their version of it “Arch Linux”, it's proper for you to correct the misinformation by calling it “Arch GNU/Linux”.
>>
>>60598811
That would make YOU the one spreading misinformation, since that's not the proper name for Arch Linux.
>>
>>60598829
Calling the system “Arch Linux” implies that it's a flavor of “Linux,” and people understand it that way: >>60598742

If they called a GNU/Linux distro “Arch BSD,” you would call that a mistake. “This system is not BSD,” you would tell them. Well, it's not Linux either.
>>
>>60598848
And yet a)It's still the proper name and b)they have the right to call it whatever they wish, since GPL does not restrict you from naming the final product whatever you wish.

Therefore, not only are you a pedantic asshole, but you're also factually wrong.

Back in the olden days I had a similar problem with ubuntu too. As >>60599775 suggests, I could still click and everything and things reacted when I hovered over them as normal, the cursor was simply invisible.

I fixed it by adding

Option "HWCursor" "off"

to /etc/X11/xorg.conf under Section "Device". 'Course kids these days don't even have xorg.confs and expect their X server to work automagically. Ha! Back in my days, if you wanted magic you put on your wizard hat and you god damned typed it yourself!

I have to say, of all of them, Ubuntu is the worst, Fedora is the best, Manjaro and Solus are tied in the "it just werks" category. Fedora requires some initial setup work unlike Manjaro and Solus, but it does work well.

I don't want to insult anyone who swears by Ubuntu, but any time over the years I have tried to use it, it has always required the most work from me.

I'd probably prefer the LTS version by default(that is, unless you need new versions of some of the software or the kernel), but if you don't mind being basically forced to upgrade to the newest version when it comes out(only 9-months of support for regular versions) and don't need the extra stability, there's no real reason not to pick the newest version.
