How will tools like phonegap effect the future of programming? Would you recommend that people still try to get into the industry or would you steer them away from it as a career path?

so it lets you make a web page, and call it an app?

hybrid apps are the future.
The problem is apple with their gay ass slow webView components.

I'll quit this profession if I have to develop desktop programs using javascript with Electron

What, don't you want to create a hello world program that takes up half a gig of ram? You could make the next Slack with that kind of tech!

I find xamarin is easier to develop with then JavaScript hybrid apps. It also runs faster too.

a native application will always offer a better experience
I seriously hope there are still people left on this earth who care about this

You're not alone, anon.

I would recommend this
https://functionalcs.github.io/curriculum/
because I wrote it, otherwise I would recommend this if you just want to program
https://www.edx.org/micromasters/software-development and start doing the above curriculum after in your spare time. When you figure out types are specification and proofs are programs you'll never go back.
I also like The Art of Computer Programming series, though it's taken me 3 years almost to finish just the first four books and Knuth now has a 5th out in 2 fascicle releases full of completely new math (Stochastic calc, Martingales, ect). I'm going to need another 3 years.

I do.
In my opinion the best way to do applications is to make an API and have clients consume them, no matter if it's HTML5 or native mobile apps.
you're basically the guy using wix and visual editors compared to the developer writing code.
I sit with them in chat all day. Nice reseller business pajeet. "apps" good one.
