They have irrational hatred for anyone who dares to use something they are not familiar with, in part because they feel threatened, and in part because they have Stockholm syndrome.

Seriously, start a thread asking a simple question about doing X Y or Z in Linux and watch a winfat show up with

Linux user here. I don't get the joke in the picture. What do you have against gaming? Are you not aware that game development is a legitimate and powerful art form? Granted, it's very rarely used to its full potential -- most developers just want to make fun and enjoyable experiences and make lots of money -- but has it never occurred to you that there's something deeper worth being created here? You can catch glimpses of it every once in awhile in some particularly special game:
>Mother 3
>Journey
>Flower
>Yume Nikki
>Lisa: the Painful RPG
>Zelda: Majora's Mask
>Portal 2
>Undertale
>Spec Ops: the Line
But even these are only fractions of the true potential of video games as an artistic medium that can be used to enlighten its players and convey powerful messages about society.

>>60573544
Oh.
Yeah that seems obnoxious.
Besides, it's not even true. Linux can definitely hypothetically play vidya, and I'm working on realizing that hypothesis right now. It's just something you don't hear about often because most game developers are just brown-nosing Big Names(C) that don't give a shit about anything but publishing the BIGGEST stuff for the BIGGEST corporations and making a small fortune. It's really sad there aren't more game devs who see the art in it, but I'm glad we're starting to see our numbers rise.

>>
>>60573565
>PC noob
>games
From that criteria alone it's probably not for you. It's not well-suited for the average gamer/media-consumer. It requires an open mind to different ways of doing things, and sometimes a DIY mentality.

As for basic word processing and web browsing, of course. It has Chrome and Firefox. LibreWriter is a more than adequate replacement for MS Word, unless you have some bizarrely specific use case that requires MS Word. And in my opinion the default calculator that comes with GNOME is better than the default that comes with Windows 10.
>>
>>60573582
Linux fills my niche gaming preferences well enough. I like weeb shit like VNs and lewd panty shot games. Neither Windows nor Linux properly supports older installments of my favorite series, particularly the Atelier or MGS series. Not without an emulator, anyways

>1. Games
Basically no. You have Portal 2, a bunch of silly phone games, a pretty nice selection of gaming console emulators, anything that runs on Java, and a fantastic resource base to make your own games if you want to. That's about it.
>2. Basic software for word processing, web browsing, and utilities like calculators and such
In abundance.
>3. Is it a bug fest or is it pretty easy to use
Both. The OS itself is solid; pretty few "bugs" per se. But the hardware support isn't great. It's not that they CAN'T get it together on that front; they just WON'T, because a lot of hardware drivers are proprietary, and distributing proprietary software or otherwise encouraging its use is against their whole philosophy. You can still obtain and install the drivers and everything works smoothly, but until you do, some things can be a pain sometimes. That being said, support problems and such are pretty easy to deal with. Linux's error messages are much more informative and specific than those supplied by Windows. Easier to Google on, and a lot of resources to provide advice.
>>
>>60573565

>>
>>60573570
This is kindof true. I use linux on my main machine and I'm actually annoyed at times by the general ineptitude displayed by most windows users, but they are a source of income. I don't troll them though. I try to help them. The trolling against linux here is probably just past time because it is tempting to reply to anti-linux bait. Also the fud is pretty effective at keeping windows users away from linux and microsoft is a pretty aggressive company. When I set up a windows machine and get it running nice I can see the value of it. I can also see the agression of it as well and I find it deplorable. But I use an older version of windows in a vm for some old applications and I value that.

I'm annoyed by poor windows users that beg for help with really simple shit and not thinking outside the box and not using free (free as in free beer) things to their advantage like linux and vm's etc. cause it's too hard. When you're poor you got time. Save your money.

>>60572441
Haven't met a windows user that had anything against linux. Most don't know about it or think it's too hard, but none are against it.
>>
>>60572441
>What do windows users have against Linux?

Shit doesn't work every fucking day and you have to google how to fix it. The fix is with the terminal of course.

Using the terminal.

Low selection of software.

Also the only time I ever use it is to run some aspie's open source program that he decided to make for linux. Then I'm stuck in the terminal for an hour collecting all the dependencies because his install directions didn't work, finally install shit, then find out I need more dependencies.

Linux is a tinker toy and not a real OS so its users can feel superior for fixing something that's always worked on windows. If you keep using an OS for a hobby instead of a tool you'll be eating crud off your foot one day.

Wrong

Shit literally just works once you have it installed, more stable than any Windows operating system in my experience.

It's not the fault of Linux if some guy decided to make a program for it without a proper list of the dependencies you need.
>>
>>60573795
what the fuck are you even doing using a program not properly supported by the package manager devs if you barely even know how to use the terminal? stick to windows, I don't care what your use case is, stick to Windows, it's for stupid people like you. It's the culture of that platform. People depend on other's code a lot, but its up to the user to go install it. When people make windows apps they don't do that shit.

meanwhile, Windows recently started removing any error messages, pic related. Presumably because the majority of their users are too stupid to google the easy fix and were just taking it to geek squad at best buy no matter what.

Wouldn't say that, just that every effort to challenge Microsoft's monopoly on PC gaming doesn't really get a lot of support, probably because most Linux users are developers or sysadmins and don't really care about games as much.

For this reason, I always appreciate game devs that release a Linux version, because you know they didn't have to, and in fact it's probably not worth it profit-wise to have a Linux version because not a lot of Linux users game. They do it because they're passionate about their game and want as many people to play it as possible, and also probably because a lot of them do their game developing in Linux and genuinely love and care about the Linux ecosystem.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I never understood this meme. It seems to be propagated by the same kind of brainless baby duck dipshit that thinks Unix-like systems are the only operating systems with shells, text editors and compilers whose computer security knowledge is summed up by a few rounds of /fglt/ and malware happening shitposting, and who couldn't do jack shit on any operating system without a wiki to hold their hand through any step.

Practically speaking, NT was built from the start for server and workstation usage, and it's perfectly usable in those roles, it's merely a different paradigm.

That's all just basic bitch shit, any platform has that. What matters are the niche titles; my grandma's online auction management suite, the shitty business plan writing assistant I used in high school, the tons of other software out there performing tasks you've never heard of and nobody with the clout and capability of developing a large free software project has heard of either. The advantage of the PC platform has always been the reality that if you want something, there is someone out there who has already done it.

Besides, if you've been here for more than a day you'd know that whether or not people consider counterparts between either platform as good as the other is always a subject up for debate. I despise a lot of major free software suites for their lack of polish, they're simply unenjoyable to use and pointless to subject myself to. I live on the terminal because that's the only respite I have from ugly GTK/Qt OS X/Metro wannabe trash.

This is even more of a reason to hate Windows, though. It encourages creating proprietary software absolute essential to whatever the task in question, and then abandoning it or never supporting it. That leads to all kinds of issues and vulnerabilities.
People might burn out and not finish an open source project, but at least someone COULD fork it and take over. Windows actively tries to prevent this.

I personally prefer PC for gaming, perhaps because I don't play any recent games. I pretty much live in the 1990s and early 2000s. It would be nice to switch to Linux, but DirectDraw support is something I am unsure about. I don't really have a computer to test it out beyond my main and the horror stories of mixing Windows and Linux (one ends up bricking the other) makes me concerned.

It is mostly FUD that keeps me around. I don't know how well Linux works, hardware acceleration required means I can't really test certain games in a VM without a second card, and I am lazy when it comes to reinstalling all my software. Essentially, I just have no problems with Windows 8.1. I have Kaby Lake, so support isn't really my biggest concern, but if things stop losing functionality I probably will test Linux more. I am of the camp that would rather have no computer at all than touch Windows 10.

I can understand a lot of the logic when Linux users say Windows is a toy OS. I see Windows 10 as such, it feels like an OS that would be on a console to play the latest games and little else. Most of the controls sound like they don't even work, with the answer being you have to do it the "right" way which turns out to be the wrong way later on because nobody knows what is going on.

Yes, I know installing Gentoo is a meme, but it is the Linux that speaks to me. The OS-Tan is hot. I really like her leotard. Oh, did I mention I base what OS I use almost entirely based on the anime character representing it and how attractive I find them? Of course functionality of the OS itself is more important, but I sure will gear myself towards the hottest girls if I can. I hold nothing against Linux because I absolutely have fallen in love with pictures of Gentoo-tan and thus am too far lost from normal society to ever be saved. Plus, if I am going free as in free, I am going to the extreme.

Well, to be fair, it only does that after the 2017 update. I am on the 2016 update, it only stops moving every other inch, but I can totally drive straight. Plus your cars didn't come with a Blu Ray player of Yo Gabba Gabba. I find this feature heavily important to the discussion of cars in general and will make it a point to go to any mechanic's shops and berate them for choosing a car without a Yo Gabba Gabba Blu Ray. Sure, you can install a Blu Ray player yourself and buy a Yo Gabba Gabba disk. But because it isn't connected to every functionality in the car, you will have to do all this work to set it up and it isn't really stable because you could put a drink in the tray and break the whole thing. Plus it wasn't really included to begin with and my car can play it slightly faster because it is not a third party player. Linux cars BTFO, Yo Gabba Gabba only works on Windows cars.

I haven't had problems with Windows either since I have started logging where problems are in the OS. If I run into an issue, I just leave that part of the computer alone, Microsoft obviously didn't want me touching that.

Please hang on while we collect as much telemetry as we can to help us figure out what is wrong. Of course, nothing might be wrong, in that case we are sorry this happened and hope it works better in the future. :(

Please don't tell me you are a faggot who goes to the store and buys proprietary food that you aren't able to disassemble to molecules of. Enjoy the botnet, every bit of food has tiny cameras in it that gets inside your body and watches you a bit more. Toe jam doesn't have that. Windows was designed well enough that a 5 year old could use it? And this was at least 13 years ago, assuming you're following the rules?

That's a pretty good job on Microsofts part since 97% of adults still can't/won't use Linux.

Yeah, they "COULD", but it rarely happens, so shut the fuck up and stop acting like abandonment isn't something that happens to any piece of software barring the big names, or that it's even an advantage that your "software absolute essential to whatever the task in question" can be left in the hands of some random hobbyist you've never met with no experience in what you do.

I said it's regurgitation, not that it's useless.
>CS program are all about principles that will carry you off for the rest of your lives. Not making them to be codemonkeys or supercomputers loaded with all technician's use-cases.
The point I was making was not that they were CS students but that they had been using the operating system for four fucking years and didn't even know its most basic components even after numerous development courses. Having that knowledge is not being a "code monkey" or "supercomputer," (???) it's "not being a retard." Stop making terrible excuses for mediocrity and retardation.

nothing.

Well, last time I _HAD TO_ use linux it was pretty shit from a user-experience standpoint (back in the early XP era, cca 2001-2002 or so). Or it may have been that the dudes that compiled it for us were retards who hated everything that didn't use a command line.

Heck, I actually prefer the aesthetic of some distros now - then again most of the stuff I use is on Windows.

All there is to it, really.
