recommend me a gnu/linux distro to do some torrenting with? im familiar with fedora 25 workstation and would use that + installing vuze but less resource usage is really preferable here

there is no os on that device currently, and it doesn't have to be a live cd. i dont want to spend a whole bunch of time getting it ready either so while >install gentoo + rtorrent would be light on resources eventually it isnt really an option

there must be something perfect for me, no? thinking lubuntu since its "light" and comes with transmission, but might also get slacko puppy and then install deluge

Gentoo + qBittorrent

Devuan netinstall, get familiar with apt and install transmission-daemon as the daemon and either use the web interface or install a frontend. There are two frontends you could try, tranmsission-remote-gtk, or the one I use transmission-remote-cli. Very low resource usage.

finally my uni semester is over and god damn im done with windows. only reason i stuck around with it was because one of my classes demanded we work with visual studio.

so now that im free i want to install linux. /g/ what distro is the best for a shitty acer laptop? more precisely the acer aspire 722? i really want more performance out off this trash because its my actual school laptop i take with me to class.

What's so hard about it? You mostly just install it and go.
But in case you run into difficulties there's only 3 things you really need to know.

First, that just running wine normally uses a default "prefix" but you can create additional ones by running wine with PREFIX=/path/to/prefix if you want.
Second is that if you want a 32-bit prefix rather than a 64-bit one then you start wine with WINEARCH=win32

and last but not least, if a particular game isn't working you'll probably just need to add a few libraries which is handled through the tool "winetricks". You can go to WineHQ and look it up whichever game it is that's giving you trouble to see what others have done to get it working.

Playonlinux just handles different prefixes for you and automatically applies any recommended additions, but like I said for most games (especially if they aren't new) you don't really have to do anything, or even worry at all about prefixes. Just "wine <yourgame>.exe" and it works most of the time.

Imho, the Vim user manual is the best resource for learning stuff. ":help usr_01.txt" and read on. If you've learned the utter basics in vimtutor, then the user manual is the next best step.

Set aside some time to go through it all. It's surprisingly easy to follow.

Linux SUCKS. Why? Because:

1) Command lines/Lack of GUI's

Why the fvck would I want to use a command line? I have a modern computer, capable of displaying color and icons. Why should their be a command line? And further, why doesn't everything have a gui? Gui's are good, and easy, and don't require me to learn commands. Yey for Gui's.

2)Root/sudo is stupid.

Why on earth should I have to deal with either using sudo or running as root to actually use my programs? I still can't get a lot of programs to run because they keep whining about permissions. What ever happened to good old admin accounts? Why does sudo break everything?

3)Apt-get

Now this is just plane stupid. Why is it so damn hard to install anything? I have a desktop, why not do it the way it should be done? I get the installer icon, click on it, press forward a few times, wait, and have a nice icon on my desktop. Why isn't it done this way?

4)Compiling

Again, stupid. Just give me a fvcking installer program. None of this compiling sh1t.

Come on Linux. The rest of the world has moved beyond 1990. It's time for you to do so also. I'm giving up and installing windows.

How hard is it to get up to date software on debian? Preferably stable. Debian is my ideal distro but I use Arch right now mostly because I need new packages. My laptop's suspend and backlight only work on kernel 4.9 or 4.10 and newer, and my nvidia GPU requires the newest driver (380) and up to date versions of bumblebee. Ideally I want to use kernel 4.11. How easy is it to get packages that recent on Debian stable? Should I just use testing/unstable? Do they break more or less often than Arch? Testing or unstable?
>>
>>60576449
Backports really helps. There's a 4.9 kernel in backports. I don't know what specific versions of the other stuff you need, but you can search https://www.debian.org/distrib/packages to find out if any branch has the required versions.

I used to run testing just fine, but a couple of years ago I found it to be not so stable any more and switched to stable. I'm talking about stuff like updates with aggressive dependencies that might try to remove stuff you want and thus you have to pay attention to rather than blindly apply, and apt-listbugs warning about spooky bugs that scared me out of upgrading certain packages but that I may have been overreacting to/misinterpreting. That is really all the trouble testing gave me, but since I didn't need newer versions of much stuff I switched to stable.

If by any change you find testing and sid to be too unstable, remember that you can run a mixed system, mostly stable but with some packages from testing or sid. I've pretty much always done that and it's never given me trouble.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'm not replying for your sake but for the poor people who might take your trollpost seriously. There are a lot of things about GNU/Linux which actually suck, but those are real technical details and you listed none of them. Funnily, Ubuntu addresses all of your complaints. For an actual computer dork it is the perfect alternative to Windows. You have several GUI options to install stuff, and it's actually easier as it keeps track of your installations in the same interface you use to install. 7/10 Windows retards wouldn't know how to remove a program and simply delete the desktop icon. The one exception is sudo. Even Windows users should not work with admin accounts and use the UAC instead. Ubuntu sets you up with this from the start, so again it's superior.

So to wrap it up, in Ubuntu you don't have to use a command line. Everything has GUI, including several package managers. Make peace with sudo, it protects you. And last, you have to compile nothing. Every piece of crap is already precompiled for Ubuntu.

can anyone explain why auto disk set up makes a huge root partition? 50gbs for room, 260 for home and 8.5 block? i mean im not running out of space or anything but its quizical because im used to how windows has only one partition
>>
>>60577693

that 50gb partition only likely has a few gb used most likely, 8.5gb is swap partition most likely - something windows makes out of the box too but as a file not a partition

as to why the root partition is 50gb, it's a little large but the root partition can fill up when instaling a large amount of software, logs being used, etc, usually 40-50gb is a decent size and is all you'll need
>>
>>60577502
>Usually theres like an あ that lets you do it
There usually is indeed. Back when I was running scim or maybe uim, I had to make sure to have an applet run upon login so it'd put an icon in my notification area. I'm running ibus now and I don't know where the sorcery is because I see nothing in my xfce session settings, but I do have that icon.

Check the list of installed files for the input method you're using (uim, scim, ibus, fcitx), see if there's something that sounds like an applet and try running it. In my case I think it's probably /usr/lib/ibus/ibus-ui-gtk3.

>>
>>60577693
Seperate partitions makes filesystems more independent. This helps with reinstalls for instance. I run Fedora and I modify the default setup to have 4 separate data partitions in addition to the /boot /root /home. So when I want to update every 6 months all I do is reformat /boot and /root which is where all the distro stuff goes. All of the data I've created are on the the other partitions so I don't have to worry about backups. I did similar stuff in Windows but it just seems to work even better with the mount system. Why one does it and not the other is probably due to tradition as well.
>>
>>60577985
I have one partition. When I reinstall, I backup etc in /home/etc, I remove everything but /home. And after that I reinstall. I never need more than one partition.
>>
>>60577985
you mean when updating the kernal? i get the /home partition in this case, that makes sense. Also your set up seems like its superior for in case anything goes wrong, why isnt is the default?
>>
>>60577962
It's just a simple server for files, backups, Plex etc so I don't want to make it too complicated. All I keep reading is that btrfs is still in development so using latest version is recommended and that's when I realised my btrfs is over 6 months old.

Do I just add a source to apt and install it or what? I read btrfs is part of the kernel so I wasn't sure if it would create problems by installing another btrfs version.

Okay. Actually, my case is similar (ibus + mozc). I can switch between default IM and mozc, either with the mouse or with a keyboard shortcut, but that alone doesn't allow me to type Japanese. Once I enable mozc, I have to click its icon and select input method -> hiragana.

I don't suppose your problem is something as silly.

The only difficulty I've had with nipinput was that, when I ran uim, before I could even enable my Japanese IM I had to right click inside the text field where I wanted to type and do Input Methods -> uim. This was annoying because I had to do it in every program I wanted to type Japanese in and not all of them supported it. Maybe this is closer to your problem?

I don't think I have any other ideas to offer.

>>
>>60578031

The btrfs "version" you are referring to is just the userspace tools used to manage the filesystem (subvolumes, snapshots, etc.). I doubt it has much impact on reliability. The kernel version is more important.
>>
>>60578024
>updating the kernel
I only reformat after a new release. Now I'm running Fedora 25. I'll reformat again with 26. You can update but it seems like every update ends up having its own little gotchas that I'd rather avoid. When I upgrade my kernel it just installs the new kernel on /boot and removes an old one if the number of kernels is over a certain amount.

>Why isn't this the default?
In Fedora the /home /boot /root partitions are default. Other distros might not have this default because breaking up partitions requires you to make assumptions about your space usage.

Like I chose against the defaults to use a 35GB /root partition. I think the default was like 4GB. I'm using 12GB of /root right now. That's where all my packages get installed. So essentially the other 23GB is wasted unless I put something that doesn't "belong" there in /root. On the other hand if I had chosen 4GB I would have needed to uninstall packages or resize my partitions by now. So in some ways its dangerous to make this assumption about someone who is just a click click click install user. I use LVM on a LUKS partition so while I'm not familiar with the procedure I know resize is easier than having to repartition and reinstall.

Note that I've been told 4GB is more than what most people need for /root. I do have a bunch of developer packages that contain files you only need to build other packages. I also have lots of stuff I don't use anymore installed. It doesn't run in the background so it only eats HDD not RAM. I just let it stay.

So gnu is like a set of tools right? linux (the kernal) is an operating system unto itself and is often used in embedded systems. Gnu is more like an extension to the operating system and cant be considered an actual operating system until hurd is more mature, or can be considered a wip os if anything.

IMO hurd needs to die however as it has no actual uses and developement resources are better spent elsewhere.

?

As for the auto-mounting, does it really need to be when you login? The usual thing would be to auto-mount at boot.

If you really mean at login, then first you have to make it so that you can mount them without sudo. One way to do this is to add the mount option "user" to their entries at /etc/fstab, and then chown their mountpoints to yourself. Then you should be able to just "mount /run/media/nazrin/Storage\ Drive" without sudo. When that works, you just have to make it so that that command runs when you log in. Your DE probably provides some way to run commands / start programs when you login. There are other ways but I have no experience with them.

I don't think anyone believes systemd being a botnet. It's just getting bloated and more complicated than it should. Slackware, BSDs and to some degree, Void, are good choices if you don't want systemd.

Having alternatives is one of the *nix' benefits. I don't think every distribution adapting systemd would be a good thing, even if it "just werks". Besides, when I tried Void it booted way faster than any systemd distro.

Meanwhile, devuan has an anti code of conduct while debian has a CoC. Devuan is anti SJW while debian is pro SJW.

aqemu is broken, use virt-manager

I don't mind the arguments about systemd being botnet, bloated or having a large attack surface. I don't care about disliking Rust or Mozilla for logical reasons. Caring about or believing to the whole SJW ordeal and allowing it to affect your opinions on soft-/hardware or anything technology related is retarded. Obligatory kys.

as far as I know this install several services and you need to know which port for using iptables in case you want
>>
>>60575631
Devuan netinstall, and preferably try to use a wm instead of a DE to keep the system light if you concern about performance, also check >>>/t/764046

download an ubuntu iso and
cp ubuntu.iso /dev/sdX
sync

that ubuntu image has pretty much all the partitioning software you want, as sourcemage installation is similar to gentoo's you can use a gentoo image too
