I was just reading up on the Seiko 5 movement and now I'm kind of retreating from my decision to buy a SNK809 as my first watch. It seems the movement is really old. Are there similar Seiko field watches that might more expensive but have a better movement? They'd have to be a similar size too due to wristlet.

If I can't find it I might just pull the trigger on the Citizen BM8180 instead

My "new" Favre Leuba Sandow.
Basic 17j Swiss movement from the '70s, I also like the angular case design and the fact that it's decently small and thin.

Legibility is high, the polished gilt hands contrast the sunburst dial.

Not bad overall, considering the price I paid (~42£ at eBay auction).

They're really useful, just not as jewel-y as watches.

I think they're worth it for the health functions alone, I.e. a very reliable heart rate and pressure monitor, which can double as a sleep monitor too.
And it has the most pleasant and effective alarm, as it taps your wrist which wakes you instantly without raping your ears with an alarm tone at full blast.

Everything else (apps, etc.) is icing on the cake. For me the most useful "apps" is playback control for music, and maps when I'm trying to walk to an address, so that I don't have to check my phone at every intersection. Also uber, and remote control for your phone's camera.

I think it's affordable for what it is, even when disregarding the watch function. It has very tight tolerances, I guess they could only achieve that at this price point through economies of scale.

>shitty aspect:
Battery. You have to charge it everyday.
Shut sucks if it's your only or main watch.

I wouldn't run the watch until getting it serviced, you're at risk of causing further damage to the movement. Mechanical watches really aren't about value for money, though, so I'd repair it for sentimental value alone. Sure, you could buy a new Seiko for the cost of a service, but it won't carry those memories along.

I've actually heard good things about getting the ST-90 serviced. Considering that the movement basically is a Venus 175, an independent watchmaker should be able to service it.

What you need to be concerned about is bad QC. I've heard hit and miss things about the Seagull '63's reliability. If this micro-brand can actually sort out QC when they "assemble the watch in America" I might actually bite.

I believe Rolex charges $500 for a regular service, but a good local independent watchmaker (DO YOUR RESEARCH!) Should be able to do it for far less. I got my 116223 Datejust serviced for $150 by a great independent.
>>
>>60578382
Family owned and run imo are where it's at. They usually have the most to lose through bad service, and the most to gain through community appreciation.
>>
>>60575322
700, edging on 800 depending on what needs doing and local taxes. My sister got her datejust's 10year service and crystal replacement (she dropped it and it shattered) and this took about €700 or €800 or so.

And independent would hopefully cost less, but they would likely only service the movement and any other broken bits, they normally wouldn't (and nor should you ask for them to) polish the case.

Hi I do not own any fancy watches but would like to get one at some point

What exactly goes into a service and when should one get their watch serviced?

If you take it to an independent, do they replace parts or something? Let's say you have a Rolex, do they have original Rolex parts to replace them with or do they use chinkshit/aftermarket parts?

Btw I thought Rolex stopped suppliying independent watchmakers of parts and stuff

>>
>>60581275
>Btw I thought Rolex stopped suppliying independent watchmakers of parts and stuff

There's still a few hundred or so people in Burgerland with parts accounts. Rolex makes movements for decades and the parts can be salvaged from cheaper models if needed (e.g. using an Air-King's movement to replace parts in an expensive Explorer or No-Date Submariner).

In terms of servicing Rolex is BY FAR the cheapest and most convenient to have serviced amongst high end brands. Currently they have 10 year intervals between servicing but you can go as long as you can until the oil dries out and it runs slow. Rolex builds everything like a tank so parts breaking is fairly uncommon, so replacing significant parts isn't normally done in regular services unless you've dropped it on concrete or something and have actually broke the watch through blunt force.

Assuming you'd probably go for a Rolex or an Omega for your first fancy watch, as most people do, taking it to the official service center will be best for you, and not as expensive as you might imagine as long as you don't abuse/damage the watch and only service is needed. By the time you gain more experience with watches you may take the chance to look for an independent watchmaker to service it, but for now, keep it simple.

1) Ranking brands is somewhat pointless. Brands can make both good and bad watches. So you end up needing to do some sort of averaging or something across the lineup.

Question is: Who would even want a chart like this? Probably a newbie. But what a newbie needs is to see the difference between good watches and poorly made watches. If you give them that they'll start to create their own perceptions of general brands. No reason to give it to them directly.

2) Breitling is a should buy but Piaget isn't? It's like opposite day.

Nobody here is going to know, but I'm gonna ask anyway. The raketa 1989 catalog specifies serial numbers for the 24h watches, but what about the black bezel, was it optional? Could all dials come with and without one?
>>
>>60583595
Because this kind of charts can't realistically portrait the quality of a particular model and therefore only leads to misinformation.

Almost any brand can make a top-tier watch in their range, if they apply themselves, and almost all brands have made a shitty one, at least once. Unless you compare specific models against each other, it wont be useful at all.

>>60583882
For a tl;dr newbie chart it isn't bad. Maybe a few tweaks, but that's all.

It shows the difference between fashion watches and "real" watches, which could be an all new idea to someone new to watches.
And of course it can't get into specifics, it's a chart. But for a overall, rule of thumb, broad guide for newfriends it's close to solid.

Sure it might perpetuate eh brand perceptions for a few watches, but it also would save someone from getting like a Tag.
>>
>>60584273
AND the "should buy" / "can't bother saving up" sections are good. Besides nitpicking one or two names, and moving them around.

You guys are saying fuck the chart over almost nothing.

Breitling makes a good watch, it shouldn't be in the top tier, but if you have the money for a /nice/ Tag this could steer you towards a Breitling.
I don't get the Breitling hate. Is it just the designs? Yeah a lot of them suck, but--specifics--not all of them.

I think the tier names should be changed also, the second tier name is retarded, and putting Breitling there wouldn't make sense, but putting it in with a SARB doesn't make much sense either.
And don't get me wrong, I have 2 SARBs. Love them, but still.

Not every newbie is going to read a whole bunch of shit. Some want a quick guide to throw money at.
To a newbie like that, what do they need?
And don't say some shit like, they need to read or they shouldn't get a watch.

Cartier's a jeweler, not a watchmaking house so they don't really make shit.

Yes. What watch is it and where are you? There might be a neighboring country. Might not be worth the bother or the risk of transport there and back, and if it's of real sentimental value to you despite it's objectively "not worth it" status you probably don't want it in the mail system anyway and if shipped then only via costly courier with insurance, further swelling the price of something that probably really doesn't warrant the expense.

So, again, what and where?

So something like this.

You could make it where it has all sorts of good watches called out specifically like the el primero, or reverso and everything else.

Are there any movement-wise decent "modern" fuckoff style watches (Resembling Hublot Big Bang, ROO etc.) in the <$1000 price range?

And before anyone gets triggered, yes I own a shit ton of small Seikos both mechanical & quartz, just curious.

>bucks or just stay in the shitter range
A seiko 5 will go on and on for years. Or, at least, they did. That's what they designed for: longevity, specifically in 3rd world countries where batteries (and servicing) was hard to come by back in the day. My driver has had his seiko 5 for like 15 or so years. I don't think he's ever had it serviced, and that's not old as far as I've heard about that line. Wear them for 20+ years and by that time the internals would've ground themselves into a metal mush but by then you're either dead, the world has ended or everyone has turned into massive fucking faggots and applewatches are de rigueur .

Orient 3-Star's (tristar)
Seiko 5's
Citizen 7's.

>debating whether I should buy anything over 200 bucks
Most watches over 200 bucks that's not something decent (Rolex, GS etc., etc.) are mostly populated by real shitters anyway, and unlike the hardy cheap jap or slav shit (which aren't really shitters imo) they're mostly just a rip off. If you're spending real money for something nice then there will be service centres for such a brand wherever you are.

Imo, buy super cheap, or buy super expensive. The shitter trap is all that crap in the middle that's not cheap enough to be called a bargain or "just a tool" and is not nicely made, interesting or innovative enough to be truly valuable and worth taking care of for a long time. It's that filler area that lures in the the undiscerning, the impatient or the clueless. There are exceptions to this of course, but they are few.

Then again, it's your fucking money so buy what you want if you like it but don't worry about servicing; shit's not going need it for a while unless you totally fuck it up. Don't be clumsy and drop your shit on hardwood floors because you were in a hurry or something because that just fucking sucks asshole.

I was joking that it was absolutely perfect FOR YOU, not about its size. For me, the SBGH001 is the grail since I prefer time/date only watches and the GS hi-beat has a decent argument for being one of the absolute best time/date only watches on the market at any price.

Plus I'm a total sucker for the grammar of design.

>Air king is the worst Rolex
It wasn't. The AK's were one of rolex's longest lasting lines before it was discontinued and replaced with its true spiritual successor, the oyster perp.

The old AK's had the 3130 that was in the explorer 1 and sub, oyster case and bracelet, all made up to spec. AK's may have been the cheapest, but they were still a rolex.

This new "air king" truly is fucking heinous though, no one in their right mind can defend that. I can't even blame my usual bitch-boogieman, the mainland chinese
>muh mainranders
for this monstrosity.

It's more likely it was "bring your autistic child to work day!" in Geneva the week they were creating the new AK's.

What the fuck is with that logo? It's not even playful like the milgauss and their silly lightning seconds hands; it's just glaring retarded "design" work.

When I first saw this I knew rolex had truly gone full retard and was beyond redemption. Vintage only. I could forgive the obese sea dweller thing, the bulky subs, the retarded ROLEXROLEXROLEXROLEX rehaut, but I drew the line at the swollen beyond all nice proportions datejust II's and massive day-dates.

That Airking threw me over the line. It looks like a fake factory in china decided to have some fun making a fantasy model, but I'd think that even the chinese fakers would have better taste.

Thoroughly disgusting.
