I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.

(An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example.

Thanks for listening.

Linus Torvalds is a retard if he thinks we should refer to an entire OS by the name of an exchangeable kernel. The truth is that Linus NEEDS it to be called Linux. When the Tech CEOs of Apple and Google and IBM, and others hear about "Linux", they assume they are talking about the OS and not just the kernel. They then dump billions into developing "Linux" with the intent of improving the OS, but in actuality much of that money goes to over-developing the kernel (and thus the Linux Foundation gets a big chunk of that money under false pretenses). Basically, Linus wants everyone to call the GNU POSIX operating systems "Linux" so that his rent gets paid. He'd call your Android and Router and your parent's smartTV "Linux" too if he could get away with it. Linus Torvalds is a piece of shit.

No, buddy. Android is a system made by Google which uses Linux as kernel. Just like macOS uses Xnu, Windows uses NT and GNU uses Linux.

I would simply like to interject for one moment. What you're saying is Linux, is in actuality, GNU/Linux, or as I have lately taken to calling it, GNU with Linux. Linux is not an operating system by itself, but actually another free piece of a completely functioning GNU system made proper by the GNU core libraries, shell tools and vital system components completing a full OS as described by POSIX.

A sizeable amount of computer holders use a subspecies of the original system everyday, but do not know. By a strange happenstance, the version of GNU applied now is often called "Linux", and a substantial number of its holders are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, made by the GNU Project.

A true Linux does exist, and this population do have it installed, but it is but a part of the system they use. Linux serves as the kernel: the part of the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is a necessary part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the shadow of a whole operating system. Linux is normally applied in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with the addition of Linux, or GNU/Linux. Every one of the "Linux" distros are really distros of GNU/Linux.

>>
>>60566346
I'm terribly sorry for interjecting another moment, but what I just told you is GNU/Linux is, in fact, just Linux, or as I've just now taken to calling it, Just Linux. Linux apparently does happen to be a whole operating system unto itself and comprises a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Most computer users who run the entire Linux operating system every day already realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, I was misled into calling the system "GNU/Linux", and until now, I was unaware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux project.

There really isn't a GNU/Linux, and I really wasn't using it; it is an extraneous misrepresentation of the system that's being used. Linux is the operating system: the entire system made useful by its included corelibs, shell utilities, and other vital system components. The kernel is already an integral part of the Linux operating system, never confined useless by itself; it functions coherently within the context of the complete Linux operating system. Linux is never used in combination with GNU accessories: the whole system is basically Linux without any GNU added, or Just Linux. All the so-called "GNU/Linux" distributions are really distributions of Linux.

Touhou, TBoI, Rabi Ribi, Hotline Miami… I don't spend much time playing games right now but I can try to tell my experience.

There are a lot of games ported to Linux but they often works a bit worse. So you can try to play with Wine to launch some games. It will be a lottery full of disapointments but sometimes it can surprise you. Some technically simple games can run without any problems but complex 3D-graphical games won't work in the most cases. Sometimes games work better under Wine than native ports (e.g. Hotline Miami).

Linux is a bad choice for games, but it can suit you depending on preferred games, luck and desire to dig into problems.

You should pick up RCT2 on GOG and install OpenRCT2.

Thanks.
I thought so, because "Pharaoh Rebirth" didn't work either.
>>60576116
Like this?
>>
>>60576270
I use CC or CC2, I don't remember exactly. It wasn't hard to install but maybe I installed something from this list, it was a long time ago.
>>
>>60576378
Also I don't use PlayOnLinux.

So basically you just need to config the keyboard before you start the game.
Set the controls to attached image and then start the game.

It should work.
Let me know if it doesn't.

Diablo 2, Fallout 1/2 and NV. Werks great.
I don't see the appeal for the newer games.
>>
CSGO
Works awesome once you find our what is forcing vsync.
Your DE might force it, so you disable it
Then you find out your graphics card settings are also forcing it
But once you fix it all, it's as good as Windows
>>
I play DOTA 2 (works perfectly) but my main game is cs go and it run poorly on Linux compared to Windows.
I hope for source 2 for cs go

I wish I could play dragon's dogma without using that GPU passthrough shit

Wanna play together? Hmu bb
>>
>>60576432
Nope, I thought so too, but it doesn't work.
The joy.ini file does change with the new shortcuts but for some reason it doesn't work.
Could it be font issues inside WINE? because I don't get the Japanese characters instead I get "squares"

it works.
let me try a new prefix and see maybe I did something else.
>>
TF2
Factorio
Cities Skylines
Rimworld
Ark

Performance is the same on my desktop. Performance is much better in Linux on my laptop with 4GB of RAM. Turns out that games run a lot better when the OS isn't eating over half of the available resourses.

>>60576659
Sure, but in a week or so.
I'm currenlty working my ass off on an assignment.

Osu and TF2
much better than windows

yeah it just works.
try setting up a new x64 prefix

setup video:
https://files.catbox.moe/86s2vr.webm

if for some reason that doesn't work I guess you could try these config files that were generated.
https://a.uguu.se/t6MW6wPxDAzE_config.tar.gz

but I think a new prefix will help

Downloading Wine 2.8-staging.
And thanks for the webm, really calm music.

Replace dial.dat in /data/font for the game folder for translation.

counter strike go

it plays worse than windows but i can cheat on it because valve is retarded. I only put on auto aim when it is a match I am playing is 50/50 as far as sill level I use auto aim to push our team over the edge.

>>60555527
Some games run better, some games run worse. Depends on how much of a fuck the devs gave when developing the Linux version.
>>
>>60576903
I figured it out.
It was the architecture of the prefix, I was using the 32-bit instead of the 64-bit, as well as there was " [] " in the config files that some how was interfering.

How do you install ckjfonts from POL?
>>
>>60577757
dunno how POL does it officially, but if you just want a quick fix you could try
WINEPREFIX=<path-to-prefix> winetricks allfonts

of course, you'll need to have an uptodate winetricks installed.

I'm so hoping they make it work somehow with DX10/11. The idea of having noticeable less performance than Windows doesn't sound appealing to me.
>>
>>60575248
nice, very nice, wish it be in english though

Can you run a cracked version of Photoshop in wine? Thats what I've been struggling with.

a few years ago there was a dx10-11 gallium tracker, but the project ended a few years ago.

last month marek, one of the amd mesa guys, more or less stated that the project won't be coming back anytime soon, if ever
