Is x265/H.265/HEVC good, or not? I only really care about the quality of the picture, not worried about filesize. My new laptop supports 265 hardware decoding in MPV so I'm considering getting 265 instead of 264 for any future movies I rip/download.
>>
>>60555474
I thought that required savant-level intelligence or dedication in order to get working. The way I heard it described was "By the time it works you won't want to play games anymore."

Why should I use XySubFilter?

Also I can't find the difference between these two pictures; one is with madVR default settings in MPC-HC, and one is using Enhanced Video Renderer (custom presenter) which is the default setting in MPC-BE.

Also why tf does MPC-HC not save screenshots at the video resolution (1920x1036)?

pic related is mpc-hc madvr default

Is there a service that allows me to throw paltry sums of money at young white males to develop FOSS support for my obscure hardware and GNU+Linux distro combination?
If not, could one of you NEET losers make one?

>>
>>60555505
I believe it's gotten easier, but my hardware doesn't support it, so my curiosity has been mostly academic. It's still the best option for most games outside of the steam list, unless you're willing to put up with a dual boot. Linux is probably never going to get the momentum windows has or even the artificial pull that apple creates. But if you're not specific about which games you want, it's gotten a lot better these days.
>>
>>60555636
How do I get MPC-HC to show the same frame? Sorry for being a noob at this.

There are coder for hire sites all about. If you want some one who can reliably and quickly get things up and running for your unique combo of hardware and OS, though, paltry sums of money are probably right out.
>>
>>60555582
Windows puts out an everliving shitton of updates. The only known ones related to telemetry were put out a year or so ago, but microsoft has probably slid a few under the hood since then, and there's really no way to tell. You can look up blackviper's shit if you want to pre slim your install, but that's mostly about reducing the amount of disk space it takes up. There's not a lot you can do to improve performance over stock setup.
>>
I restarted my computer and Universal Media Player won't start anymore. How fix?

yeah, i'm using beatrice-raws and 35mm subtitles.

I can pastebin the subtitles. https://pastebin.com/JybuZHtb

It's from 1080p 35mm release. saves you from downloading a 4gb file like i did
>>
>>60555645
Yea I'd do it but I'm mostly just playing whatever my WinFag friends play. I'd be content with Dota, TF2, CSGO and Minecraft if that's all they wanted to play, but it's not.

I'm mostly not interested in it until it becomes braindead easy so I don't have an excuse to not use it. I've mostly resigned to the fact that if I wanted to absolutely free of surveillance, I'd need to live in a different country, but I could get something resembling privacy if I had an old thinkpad with like Qubes or something on it and always worked through a VPN.

There's a certain amount of privacy that I'm willing to sacrifice for convenience and another amount is just inevitable, but honestly GPU pass through is still just too much effort, even if I am being really lazy.
>>
>>60555714
you know you can just download the subtitles separately. It seems like 35mm is just a simple R1 job. I'll wait for the proper subs. Thanks anyway.
>>
>>60555715
I mean if you've got the hardware already, you might as well fuck around for an afternoon and see how far you get. You can always restore from a system image. If you really prefer linux for 90% of your shit, it might be worth it just for the performance/awesomeness bump.

>What are you trying to do, anyway?
Use GNU+Linux without having to make changes to my lifestyle, learn to do anything, or spend a lot of money. Seems like a bit of a crap chute now that I say it.
>>
>>60555763
Yea I might. Biggest obstacle is finding the motivation these days. I can't find the motivation or drive to anything anymore. Whenever my friends aren't online I just do creative writing to alleviate the boredom.

I really can't be bothered to care too much about what OS I'm using as long as my stuff works and I can't feel the NSA breathing down my neck. The NSA spying is kind of inevitable at this point, I guess I'm kind of just aiming for the sweetspot placebo where I think I'm at least trying to avoid the botnet without actually giving up my convenience.

without having to make changes to my lifestyle, learn to do anything, or spend a lot of money.
The classic engineering choice: here are three things, pick two.
You can adapt to the software available on Gnu/Linux, learn new things and spend little to nothing.
You can use the available software, spend a lot, and learn nothing.
You can learn a lot, spend a lot, and use the software your used to using.
What software is indispensable for you?
>>
>>60555995
I hear ya. Motivation is a fickle friend. Some times I can't even get it up for games. But somethings gotta give eventually, right?

Mostly I just find linux nicer to use in general, but if you've been learning all your tricks on windows it can feel like a step backward at first.

I need a new phone.

I want a new phone with VR so I can watch PoV porn The Way it Was Meant To Be PlayedTM.

What phone should I purchase in order to do this?
>>
>>60556079
I mean, I can use both competently. It's really not a question of which I'm better with. It boils down to compatibility with software I want to use. I tried to move over to Linux for a while and had a decent time of it, but my old shitty computer didn't handle wine well and GPU passthrough was still a novelty and kind of horribly documented.

I'm hoping someday VR/Brain scanning gets good. I'd honestly throw my life away at this point to get a shot at the Jumpchain CYOA game that's been occupying most of my writing. It just feels like putting in more than the minimum amount of effort into life isn't worth it.

There's no particular software that isn't replaceable or on Wine, just weird "plug and play" things I plug into my laptop like multi-disc burning towers, electronic keyboards (the musical kind), and what-have-you that Linux just has absolutely no idea what to do with because they were designed with Windows and sometimes OSX in mind.

I think the problem is you have to be putting in a certain amount of effort already for things to not feel like that. It's the same thing that makes it unusually hard to kick an addiction. The stuff that would help pull you out is the same shit you won't get near until you've already been working at it a while. The human brain just isn't good at fixing this kind of shit.

Honestly, you're hosed. You can search online to see if the hardware you're using has already been supported on Linux by some one, you can beat on the manufacturers for support, or you can pay through the nose for people that can reverse engineer the existing drivers for Linux.

It's roughly half the filesize for comparable quality to h.264, so if the filesize/resolution is similar, the H.265 rip will look better.

I think I'm understanding that experiment now, where they provided the mice with all the shit they'd ever need and then the population ballooned to a peak and then all the mice became apathetic and stopped the instinctual survival behaviors and the colony died out.

And that ties into the pyramid of needs. I have all my basic physical needs being met, I can't self-actualize so I feel like I'm stagnating and I'll just die off. I feel like it'll get better once I finish college and get a full time job I actually care about.

I guess I just need my friends to be happy more than I think or claim that I do. It's times like this I almost wish I had a desperate need for acceptance and a complementary follower complex that would make me do things to actually self improve instead of just working a dead-end IT job for the experience and money and then coming home to shitpost and play Vidya whenever is convenient for them.

That's a perfectly solid web-browsing and word-processing machine, they're designed for offices and 8 gigs of RAM will let you do a moderate amount of multitasking. That HDD is going to fill up if you download series or BDRIPS though and it's not fast enough to do video editing. If you like dwarf fortress you're going to love it but you're never going to get a card in there that can play the witcher 3 because it doesn't have a big enough power supply and the case won't fit a standard sized one.

Yea.Spice of life and shit. I just feel so decidedly average and it hurts my soul even if that statement was (I don't think it is) false. I'd up the stability of my life now if it meant hopping onto the Jumpchain and going to just about any of my favorite series and fucking around for a while before going somewhere else.

Back on topic, after I reinstall Windows on the SSD, would it be worthwhile to reformat the drive I'm currently using or can I just delete the windows folder to free up space? Just trying to save myself the effort of copying over the minimal media and contents of the drive over if I can just delete windows and be done with it.

people who know their shit with windows typically have a harder time than people who don't really know much about any OS
it's a bit of a shock to find out their "computer skills" are really just "windows skills", and much of it doesn't directly translate over to linux
regardless of how good you are with windows, when you first start using linux, you're pretty much back to square one, and this puts a lot of people off

This exactly. I always get tripped up since all of my command line skills I got in Linux. alright intelli/g/ents, I would like to build this PC sometime soon. Have I done anything retarded with this build? I already have a monitor, keyboard, all that shit. Mostly I will use it for playing some video games (not concerned with maxing out settings, I'm more than content with med-high at 60 FPS 1080p) and for music production with shitloads of tracks.

Get a Z270 motherboard, you have a K CPU, you cant overclock with a B250 motherboard.
Dont get PNY SSDs, get a 850 EVO.
Look for RX 580.

Other than that, looks ok.

I've been tinkering with my set-up for the past few days and I've gotten to 4.6ghz @ 1.35 (in BIOS). My temps spike at 68c (this was after running Prime95 too) and I feel like this is a good ending point.

As far as voltage is concerned, should I leave it at 1.35v for a stable, no worries OC or should I keep trying to pull it down?

No, IGPUs barely affect temperature.
It will support it, Intel HD 3000(2nd core i gen, aka Ix-2k series) can do up to 2560 x 1600.

Dont expect to do intensive stuff in both screens tho, for normal use and video playing it will be fine.

Oh boy do I have a good one for you guys.

So it is possible to have 2 gpu cards in a rig, as well as a shit ton of ram sticks and storage devices. The one thing i'm going to ask is is it possible to have 2 or more actual processor chips to one computer? Like 2 fucking Intel i5 chips or something like that. To go further, could I build 2 identical computers and be able to sync them together? I don't plan on trying it anytime soon this is simply a curiosity of mine.

>>
>>60559073
While in theory it sounds nice barely anything outside business and servers have software support for that you know.
>>
>>60559186
You don't. You get an HP stream 7 on eBay for $50 if you need more horsepower you'll have to buy a chink Windows tablet but you can get a quad core atom 1080p display and 4-8gb of ram for under $300 these days in a 10 inch formfactor. If you need more than that you're going to be carrying a laptop.

If you have the data connection though you could use remote pc software to use your desktop at home though.
>>
>>60559014
Putting two or more computers together is called a cluster. These days in the home people only really do raspberry pi clusters and even then it's only for fun since having that many cpus would be pointless typically in a world where TPUs and GPUs exist.

Yes you can get SERVER motherboards that support up to 4 xeons. In the only days there were even Solaris Sparc machines that supported up to 16 cards with two processors each. Those machines costs millions of dollars in 2005. Modern consumer chipsets however do not support more than 1 physical socket.

In enthusiast applications and servers you can have up to 4 channels of memory per CPU 2 dimms per channel which equals up to 8 sticks of RAM per CPU. Consumer products only have support for 2 channels at 2 dimms per channel which means 4 sticks of ram for each slot.

In 2017 there are servers with 4 CPUs with 22 cores per CPU and 2 logical cores per physical core making that machine appear to have 176 cores with 8 sticks of DDR4 per socket meaning a theoretical maximum of 4TB of RAM. But it wouldn't run Crysis very well.

lazy evaluation?
would the && statement occur first(a == b && b > 9 - a / b)
because of AND having precedence over OR with a==b evaluating as false so the a/b is never looked at.

then it evaluates with the OR on the left(7<a OR false)
or is the 7<a evaluate as true first and it just stops

so confusing ffs

I just got this old P5SD2-VM with a Pentium D for cheap (like 10$), and it seems to be working just fine. So what's the viability of soldering a new 6 pin molex mini-fit Jr. Onto this GTX 960? Story : my cousin sent the card out for RMA due to the fan not working and according to ASUS this is how the card arrived. They won't fix or replace it for anything less than $160 which is more expensive than a better performing GTX 1050ti. So I'd take the card and attempt to solder a new connector onto it. Anybody ever done such?

Any of you guys know why microphones keep breaking on my PC after about 2-3 weeks of use?
Just lost my 3rd set of headphone+mic combo today. The thing is I was extra careful with this set because it cost me 59.99. Every time after use I put it away in a secure box and never drank or anything near the mic.
Is my soundcard sending surges to break the mics or could this be a software issue?.

I'm using a MSI b350 Tomahawk mobo (BIOS 7A34v14) and Ubuntu 16.04 for the past few days, but I think I either have a problem with Ubuntu or there's a problem with my motherboard.

My connection, once or twice per day, just stops working. Resetting networking and network-manager services do nothing. dhcp release does nothing, either. The only thing that seems to solve this is to either reboot, or suspend and un-suspend it, and then it detects my LAN cable again.

I have no idea what this problem could be, and I don't know enough to troubleshoot it. I'm expecting it to be a motherboard problem, since rebooting or suspending the system solves the issue.

Any ideas?

It'll probably work.

FSB is Front Side Bus, Let me explain in terms of my P5GZ-MX:

FSB is like the bus between RAM and Processor.
Like, my P5GZ-MX has default FSB 800Mhz which was enough when I had Pentium D 925, as it too had max FSB 800.
Now when I got a Core 2 Duo E4500 its max FSB was 1066 but it was running at 800 due to my mobo.
So I overclocked my mobo and made the FSB 1066 so now it runs at full speed.

These are old mobo so overclocking is simple, by just changing clock generator we can overclock.
My default clock was 200 (means 800 Mhz FSB)
I made it 266 (means 1066 Mhz FSB)

There are bulk renaming utilities for windows, an online search for them may help you out.
Do you have any programming experience? Turning "[date] <rest of line>" into "<rest of line> [date]" is only a few lines in many languages. Once you have both strings calling "move <oldname> <newname>" is also simple.
Minus programming chops, dump a directory listing to a file, and edit it in a text editor to have all the move commands in the file, rename it rename.bat, and run it on a copy of your directory full of files.

I don't have windows with me, but I'll have to give another distro a try. Unfortunately if it's a mobo issue, that'll be something I'll have to live with for the next 6 months or so.

Pardon, but I'd just like to interject for one bit. What you're alluding to as Linux, is in actuality, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU + Linux. Linux isn't an operating setup by itself, but really another free component of a completely working GNU setup made proper by the GNU libraries, terminal tools and vital setup components fulfilling a full OS as described by POSIX.

Quite a few computer holders use a altered edition of the true setup everyday, without knowing it. Through a weird series of situations, the edition of GNU utilized now is often called "Linux", and its holders have no knowledge that it is basically the GNU setup, produced by GNU.

There is in fact a Linux, and this population do have it installed, but it is simply a portion of the setup they use. Linux is the kernel: the part of the setup that distributes the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating setup, but useless by itself; it will work only in the shadow of a whole operating setup. Linux is normally utilized in combination with the GNU operating setup: the whole setup is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. Every single-called "Linux" distros are really distros of GNU/Linux.

So I've got a guy who owns a machine shop that my family knows well. I set him up with a wireless AP a while back so he could have wifi in his shop. Now he's wondering if I could install some kind of 2 speaker audio system (the shop has 2 sections, each could probably hold 4 cars inside) so him and 2-3 guys who work for him can listen to music from someones phone (using bluetooth).

I know how to wire up audio equipment, but I have no idea what type of system would work best here. The guys really don't care too much about audio quality, they mostly just need something that's loud enough to hear the music over the machinery.

From what I can assume, the budget will be between $100-$200. If I could get away with dual "party/patio type" bluetooth speakers that were loud enough to hear over machinery, that should be fine.

I guess my questions are:
>What route would be best to persue? "patio speakers", or dedicated amp and speaker setup? Maybe a small PA system?
>If I go the "patio speakers" route, how could I tell if they will be loud enough?

Bluetooth is pretty much manditory since the placment of the equipment will be in an accessable but incovenient place. No audiophile memes, please. Cheaper and simpler is probably better in this case as long as its loud enough.

Network hardware tends to do shit like that, I had an old Asus mobo that would disconnect from the network for no reason and refuse to do anything unless the motherboard itself was shut down and power cycled. I ended up getting a separate PCI network card because nothing else would help. If you can fix it by suspending and unsuspending from the command line, you could make a cron job on Linux or whatever that triggers every few hours, or bind it to a shortcut or something.

Not sure about "dangerous", there's only a single disclosed vulnerability so far that requires you to click an obviously fucked up magnet link, and I'm yet to see a single report of anybody using it.

If you're worried about Russian script kiddies, they won't bother because making you click an .exe is much easier and 2.2.1 has a relatively obscure and small, professional-ish userbase who are at least smart enough to know about using old versions of software when it's beneficial. And if you're worried about the NSA using it, don't. They already have a zero day exploit for every new torrent client you could use, your operating system, your motherboard, your processor and probably your alarm clock. If they wanted to hack you, they probably won't be using a magnet link through uTorrent to do it.
