Actually, the year 2007 started the Web 2.0 era, which greatly enhanced the Internet. This now highest state of it lasted only for few years, because the supposed 2012 shift may haven't been bs after all. At least for the Internet, things went downhill as of 2013
>>
I think the hyper political environment of the modern internet has to be the worst of it all. It's pretty much inescapable at this point. Everyone has access to the internet, but they still live in the same communities they always have. People who live in the city share memes about dumb rural oafs, and people who live in the country share memes about liberal babies with safe spaces. It's just a bunch of echo chambers that occasionally collide.

The dumbing down of politics into tweets and memes just creates an environment where arguments only have to make intuitive sense, and that makes it really easy to manipulate people.
>>
>>60551981
The only good thing that has come out of Web 2.0 is that everything has a wiki now.

Based Wikia

It was the culture and community that made the earlier days of the Internet so great. But at least we got rid of dial-up.
>>
>>60552124

I think this is also important to keep in mind, even with the legitimate criticisms we can bring up about the internet today. The optimism of childhood can't be understated. Growing up sucks.

When I was a kid, I was only vaguely aware of all the bad shit that happens in the word and my empathy wasn't fully developed. It was very easy to just focus on the here and now and just get lost in the internet or a video game. As an adult, I have all kinds of responsibilities and obligations that make it harder for me to just get immersed in something.

It's easy to think that the world just got shittier, but I think we also have to accept the fact that the world is a much more mysterious, engaging, and enchanting place when you're a child and nothing will ever rekindle that because biology doesn't really work that way.

Man, I wish I could have been part of this shit before it got popular. I've been here since 2010, and seeing all the old shit on /a/ and stuff always makes me somewhat sad and sorta envious of anons who got to experience it. The only board I really feel like I truly "experienced" (as gay as that sounds) was /sp/. I really am jealous of the oldfags.

I wonder what the internet will turn into in another 5 years. I don't think it'll be great. Can't wait to have to deal with gay ass fucking packages and subscriptions and shit on the internet.

The 80s are overrated and gay, the 90s would've been cool though. But I'd rather not be forty years old in 2017 Jesus Christ.
>>

>spent three years previously lurking ED looking at dank old as fuck /b/ memes instead

I did the same shit. Damn it used to make me laugh my ass off. I occasionally go back to ED and it still makes me smirk from time to time. It's like when I go back to newgrounds shitty flash games to have a nostalgiafap to those shitty flash games and dating sims I used to play back when I was like 12.

I think I dabbled on 4chan, lurking, by just about 07 or 08, I might have caught the tail end of the early days. For me it was a "forbidden" (by myself) place that I thought basically held nothing but bad things and the police would come and get me or some shit if I went on there.

Was too busy on Kongregate (pre GameStop) and Newgrounds and about 50,000 other flash game sites.

I only have this ancient thing. One of my favorite rule hasn't been added yet. The good ol' rule 63.
>>
>>60556942
Chanology was the turning point. The volume of newfags was too much. Before, the ecosystem could handle integration of new comers but when it literally hit the streets, newfaggots steadily outnumbered oldfags. The 2010 Reddit diaspora sealed 4chan's fate.
>>
>>60557059
ahh nostalgia
i had forgotten about them chuck norris jokes. oldfags were relentless with them.
>>
>>60557122

Chanology wouldn't have happened without the /i/ infrastructure developed during the mass myspace phishing and hal turner operations, though. It wasn't *just* 4chan that did chanology - in fact, it was sort of tangential to the organization on partyvan IRC and partyvan[]info wiki, both of which developed prior during those other raids.

Same, I stayed exclusively on /b/ when I first came in 2008, then I slowly started checking out /int/ whenever it started, and now almost exclusively browse /g/. Even though there's a lot of POO IN LOO and Goyim shilling and other spicy memes it's still nowhere near the mindless shithole that /b/ has become. Problem is raids have now been banned and that was some of the funniest shit about /b/. It's been sterilised to the point of being nothing but excessive shit-posting and bananas now.

This has an easy solution: be an irresponsible fuck at any age. Irresponsible at 30, irresponsible at 40, irresponsible at 50, etc. Tip: you need money for this.

If you married, unmarry.
If you became a slave, unslave.
If you care about politics, care only about sex.

Fuck society, be rich.

>never used an iphone
>don't watch fox news
>don't watch the big bang theory
>don't visit tumbler
>don't visit facebook
>don't visit twitter
It went to shit a bit before all this though.
Google made a widget like system they pushed on people and that killed the internet.
Suddenly normal people just used a news feed to get information and going to several places was considered a hassle.
Myspace was just a pedo ring nobody cared about and facebook was just a worse version of that.

The internet went to shit when communities started to merge.
Human beings are not meant to have a single identity, it is so limiting.
When I was a growing up, I went to different clubs and activities and I was never the same person for all of those things.
Why should that change just because it is online?
>>
>>60560713
I hear you. I don't care about any online presence. Fuck linkedin/twitter/fakebook/tumblr/retardedness general; people need to be sheeps to not feel anxious. I don't even have a TV. I use tech to my advantage, not the other way around.

The internet from the 90s was indeed crappy, we were having so much fun that we didn't notice, but at least every website, with animated separator GIFs and all, was made by people. Many websites were crap and disappeared when the hosting went bankrupt, never to beseen again, but at least anyone putting up a website had to know HTML, FTP and have something to say. Then came myspacem fabebook and a free 'webpage' for every retard. The huge expansion in noise makes it look like there's only crap out there, but there are hidden gems. The community must be small and private. Get suddenly 1000x bigger, and everything becomes shit.

lurked several years here before my first post
>>
>>60561288
The idea is to have that can only be fun if everybody is doing it.
This removes people who hang out around people who enjoy the hobby either by making it too boring for them to be there or by engaging them so they join in with the fun.
In your example, people play cards, so lets go with that.
A game like mtg is still viewed as a "nerdy" game and a lot of people won't play it.
But the game is so boring to watch, there is not a lot of people watching it and the people who like to watch it is watching the most skilled people play, with commentary and flashy graphics in order to make the game easy to follow for a spectator.
None of that is available when you play in person, so there is not a lot of people who want to socialize with magic players while they play magic.
This means the majority of the people who attends magic related events play magic.
