This. It could be so much worse.
Noone likes working in Java but at least nearly everyone can. Just be sure to follow Java programming paradigm, syntax, and customs or else you'll make it harder for yourself.
Don't be the asshole who makes the work difficult for the entirety of the team because you're spergy about the language.
If you want to complain about it, be sure to offer working alternatives and solutions.
Good luck and godspeed.

Yes, that's all there is. Any other language you're just going to be using to write scripts that do the shit in between the java.

System administrations is being merged into webdev as a general "tech" position. It's either PHP/JS/Docker or you're ass deep in Java.

I'm just going to try to get donations on my projects. Fuck that.
>>
>>60548064
I did java for a couple of years. Honestly, it didn't pay especially well, but I was relaxed because everybody around me was old and didn't give a shit about the job so they worked their 9-5 and got the fuck out and never worked from home and never answered emails or phone calls after hours. I've worked a lot of overtime in the jobs I've had since, but I also get paid almost twice the money so... tough call.

Kotlin is also cool, but has even less of a market.

You still have to install the right JVM version on any target environment. That's like saying python is portable because there is python interpreters for all architectures/OS.

Any language that compiles to a binary across platforms is more portable than Java. In fact, languages like Go that abstract OS specifics and compile faster than Java (lol) are better and more portable. Java is just fucking sad

They are generally used to sidestep information hiding and break encapsulation in a way that is no more useful than grabbing a member directly. Occasionally, they are useful but it is around one time out of several hundred examples.

Also, throw Perl and Python in the mix. Basically, almost all P-Languages except some forms of Pascal and Pike are garbage.

Just write everything in Kotlin and no one will notice. It integrates 100% with other java code. You could have one Kotlin file in a 1000 file java project and it wouldn't break anything.
>>
>>60563602

Kotlin might ditch the boilerplate but it has fucking ugly syntax.
>>
>>60560244
It's just literally typing all day.
For example, instead of writing this:

foo.i++;

You have to write this:

foo.set_i(foo.get_i + 1);

For little to no gain, the code become more unreadable and more effort to type.

The whole idea of encapsulating change is bullshit anyways, because if a complex operation is suddenly added to a getter or setter function, and that snippet of code is in a loop, the performance goes to shit and then it's difficult to find the reason why.

You're probably in high enough demand that you can do whatever you want. But thanks for taking the cuck jobs so I don't have to. Keep it up!

I agree with you. People here like to pretend that only what *they* do is "real dev" whatever the fuck that means.

Java is fine as long as you avoid shit like Spring and JavaEE. Most of the relatively complete web frameworks are absolute garbage though so if you just want to build a website I strongly suggest using something else.

Dropwizard is alright if you just want to make a simple API.

I have a business degree, but I don't like people-facing stuff too much.

I like programing, I have great python and some C.

What job do I do to earn the most money possible?

>LMAO I suppose you could, anyone in CS probably knows everything about IT or can learn.

IT is a shit-show, especially in mid-size companies.

You need to be an Exchange admin - and good god is email a pain in the ass. Tweaking spam filters, dealing with DKIM/SPF issues because CEO randomly signed up for a mass-mailer that is getting marked as spam everywhere. Outlook works but Out Of Office does not? Seven people out of 200 keep getting prompted for their credentials and it keeps reverting from NTLM to Basic authentication for some reason? Oh look, the latest Exchange update fucked up OWA. Okay, OWA works but now search is broken. Oh look, the database is corrupt. FUCK EXCHANGE.

Also, be a good boy and go figure out how the hell to fix your out-of-support EMC SAN. You need to find some internal EMC documentation on sketchy sites and determine how the hell you back-door login to fix a bad storage processor. Why is adding hotspares so hard?

While you're at it, our auditors are in and are wondering what your business continuity plan is coming - you know, the zero-allocated-budget project where you need to be able to continue operating if an asteroid strikes the datacenter. And you better have documented every step, because they want to see proof of change control. Did you involve the board members? Who are the stakeholders?

Help, our ASP.NET application is broken. Or not. Some session shit keeps getting confused on the application domain.

By the way, here's a new SRX. I know you are Cisco certified, but it's too expensive, please port all 600 firewall and NATs to the new platform with zero downtime. Also, make sure at no point there is a lapse in firewall security or the auditors will eat your face.
>>
>>60572266

What's that about VMWare? You want a hybrid cloud? Sure, let's read roughly 795 whitepapers about 132 different competing platforms and philosophies and pitch half a dozen to a room of executives staring at you with a blank face.

Finally, better make sure you learn puppet or ansible or salt or chef or xyz to manage your configs because the company wants to scale 10x with no new staff!
>>
>>60555061
Yep, that's the risk. I'm fine with it though. Less than 10 years from retirement and I have enough invested to retire early so long as my kids don't bankrupt me going to college w/o scholarships.

>>60560968
I've been getting regular pay adjustments. Mediocre is relative. For the job and location it's above average. Compared to what I could make in a metro area working on somewhat related modern systems it's below average.
