Meh, yeah cores help but it all depends on what your primary tasks are. For example most classic games from the good old days (1996-2004) don't give a shit how many cores your cpu has, All they see is one. So in that situation clock speed would rule. Also think about compatibility. The FX line for instance sucked at single thread tasks compared to Phenom II. So yeah you "bought that killer 8 core chip" only to witness piss poor game shuddering,jerky play, and no benefit in core use cause the game don't use it anyway.

Even average use means more than 2-3 demanding threads. In modern computing you will virtually always benefit from a quad core over a dual core, and for a gaymen PC running a demanding game as well as 1-2 background applications will benefit from more than four cores.

Me again. This is why I plan to stick with my Phenom II. Maximum compatibility with everything I do, not just gaming. Plus the speed & cores to handle demanding tasks such as video work.
