alternatively, convince her it will be cheaper to buy a functional second hand phone (it may actually be)

Tell her you have old messages or something on the phone you dont want her to read so you want to get to wipe the phone first. There is still a chance of suspicion here but merely being suspected is far superior to actually getting caught.
