First for based T430.

All xx30 systems now have coreboot as of 5/19/17:
https://review.coreboot.org/cgit/coreboot.git/commit/?id=714baa119b2ded203e148b381a4a3d1a74a91a68

Intel ME exploit was patched and released two weeks early for xx30 systems, update ASAP:
http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds032435

There is LITERALLY zero reason to have an xx20 anymore. It even does coreboot better than the xx20 series.

>fantastic
>now how about a better screen?
>fuck you, that's another £70

Why
>>
>>60532279

While a quad core in a 12" form factor is an undeniably good thing, nothing can redeem the other shit factors of that machine. Its got too many cons for the few nice pros. Terrible keyboard, gimped trackpoint, little support for mods, not modular at all, looks retarded, for some reason has a 56k modem jack, etc, etc. I'd take the X230 over the 2570p any day of the week. If the only real thing is has to hold against the X230 is 2 more cores, it just won't be enough. A quad core in a X230 would be great, but at the same time when you want more power you also want more real estate to work with. Also no, docks are shit for the sake of this argument because you don't always work around places with a monitor and peripherals.

A 14.1" T4xx is still portable enough, the W5xx is where you obviously will have trouble physically fitting it in a bag if you carry other things.
>>
>>60531825
At this point it's better to just filter "2570p" altogether since the autistic shitposter cannot control himself from shitting up every thread and has ruined it for everyone.
>>
>>60532366
it is relevant to this thread. It is irrelevant to OP's shitty T430.

>looks retarded
lol, sounds like (You)r opinion.
>having 56k modem jack is considered bad now
kek. Noone is forcing you to use it. If you have a half of brain you'd easily found a use for it.
>docks are shit for the sake of this argument
Nice logic. Daily reminder that x220/x230 overheats in dock because it blocks fan inflow. 2570p doesn't have this problem because of superior cooling capable of handling quad cores.
>A 14.1" T4xx is still portable enough
>still implying your personal opinions and preferences are somehow superior

Can't believe this has to be repeated every thread.

The 2570p is fine. It is modular and significantly more moddable than the x230. Performance wise it wins hands down.

Where it fails is the style and comfort. Shit keyboard, shit trackpad, shit trackpoint, shit dimensions.

If you only care about raw power, the 2570p is the easy choice. If you care about anything else at all, you want the x230.

What isn't fine is this turbo autist shitting up every fucking thread and baiting everyone into derailing it, hence why >>60531825 had to be made.

You shouldn't use the touchpad lol
I got my X220 like a couple months ago and now I miss the trackpoint whenever I'm using a different laptop.

I think the key difference is the movement style. With a trackpad, you move straight towards the target, and stop exactly on it. With the trackpoint, fast straight lines are harder, and there's a little bit less responsiveness in the rubber dome (compared to insant responsiveness when you lift your finger off of freeze it in place), so for me it helps to think about imparting momentum to the cursor, and/or moving in curves/arcs that aim where I want to go.

It's all practice though, before long you'll never take your hands off your keyboard and you'll wonder how you ever managed with having to move your entire hand whenever you wanted to control the cursor.

You have a point about the AIDS-infested trackpad on the X220, but no middle trackpoint button on the elitebook is just a deal breaker. Not to mention that the elitebook's trackpoint sucks ass.
>>
>>60532975

You clearly don't know much about the company you're trying to defend. HP's going to split soon as a company, that's how bad it is, their profits are tanking and they're going to half one half focused in enterprise services and the other focused on gimmicky $2000 laptops named after James Bond movies that nobody buys other than YouTube reviewers. I ask again, out of HP and Lenovo, which company has a higher shipment to the business and enterprise laptop sector? Can you answer that for me? We both know what it is but I just need you to openly admit it.

>and 2017

Yeah I see that, its not worth commenting on. When I say 2016 numbers, I can obviously fucking see the other irrelevant column. Nothing really changes between those years, so I say 2016. Is English not your first language or are you just an autist?

>>60533178
But this has nothing to do with trackpoint. You mean trackpoint buttons, right?
Again, touchpad is GOAT in 2570p and you can dedicate it to double finger scrolling. A lot of people prefer scrolling this way because you use less force to do so and you can use additional gestures.
>>

Or not? You can still replace pretty much every part of an old thinkpad. Core2duos are still perfectly fine for light tasks today, I'm sure my 2nd gen i7 will still be relevant for years.

For intensive tasks I have a desktop. I also have a "gayming" laptop for when I need good specs away from home, but it's not comfy and not made to be - chiclet is fine for using WASD in games.

>>60533432
Wow, you are seriously trying to compare overclocked 4 core mobile cpu with lack of express card lines to a stock 8 core desktop cpu. Do you want a prize?
>>
>>60533690
x61t yeah.

You could go even older by I can't vouch how comfy even stuff like internet browsing or shitposting becomes at that point. I mean you can always use some meme browser like links (or emacs lol) but that's probably not what you had in mind.

Though you could always get some chink tablet at that point - like an actual tablet (and maybe throw in a tablet keyboard if you really want). Ask yourself whether the thinkpad keyboard is worth the shitter specs and added bulk and added age+wear on the hardware.

Personally I'd say an X220 is fantastic for everything and absolutely worth getting over a chink tablet. You can do basically anything on it, except graphically intensive games (because intel graphics lol). Pretty sure I could run TF2 on low if I tried on this thing. That's the sweet spot for me personally - not overkill, but enough breathing room for basically anything I'd realistically need. So if you're willing to consider spending a bit more, an X220T would serve you well.

Coreboot wasn't compatible with the T430 at all before.

All xx30 and over systems do a check to see if the BIOS being written is signed properly, and tells you to fuck off if it isn't. There's no getting around the initial flash.

Once you install coreboot though, further custom BIOS updates don't require hardware and can be written with flashrom and the software interface.

xx20 is obsolete unless you are so lazy you don't want to do the keyboard mod, or are poor.

X220 for the Real ThinkPad Experience™
X230 is better (faster), but keyboard is worse than xx20 series. It can be swapped, but requires some modding.
T420/T430 if you want something bigger than 12''.

I have a T520 and my screen stays turned off when I try to boot it. Help.
>>
>>60535507
I have three machines:
- desktop for serious gaming, like modded Skyrim or Witcher 3 (theoretically, in practice it's been sitting without an OS for a couple months, and I forgot the BIOS password, and it's some shitty asrock where clearing cmos doesn't seem to clear the password kek)
- an asus laptop for when I need good performance that isn't tied to my desk - handy for e.g. playing TF2 or H1Z1 or some autistic shit like that with my friend when I'm over at his place
- an X220 for basically anything that doesn't need either of the above when I'm not at my desk, simply because while a 15'' 3.5kg laptop is technically mobile you aren't going to use it on your lap in any real situation.

So basically I use it for shitposting, programming, studying, autism cube in bed, stuff like that.
I've actually been using my phone a lot less now that I can use a proper screen and keyboard when on the couch or in bed or whatever.

i could go for the XPS 13 but it would be more expensive and less upgradable

the Precision touchpad is not available on the older thinkpads
>>
>>60538003
Price, and some of the newer ones (The T470/T470s in particular) has some really mind boggling nonsense going on like being the only refresh in the series with no updates other than a processor bump and weird port mismatches compared to the other refreshes. Shit like the T470s has two separate internal batteries and a single soldered on RAM stick.

It's a mess.
>>
>>60538026
what's wrong with the plain T470? the S sounds like some real bullshit with the batteries and RAM, but the T470 has 2 free RAM slots and the standard one internal, one external battery layout characteristic characteristic of the newer-ish thinkpads

if you know of anything really bad about the T470 or have alternatives, i'd be willing to consider them before i hit that "buy" button"
>>
>>60538003
There's nothing necessarily WRONG, per se, compared to other laptops. They just lack a lot of the appeal of the older models.

>>
>>60538044
QC issues, the screen only goes up to FHD (and starts at 1366x768) while the T470s gets 2K.

And of course the same thing that's been wrong with T4xx series since the T440 - shit dual core CPUs at a premium price.
>>
>>60538059
the option to use a trackpoint hasn't been taken away at all! i'd consider practicing and using the trackpoint, but i like having a nice touchpad with native gesture support

I'm getting it for like $700 with the FHD screen and big battery - planning on throwing in SSD and more RAM later.
>>
>>60538076
my range to purchase is around 700-800 so the T470s is a little expensive for me

i don't mind not having 2K, 1080p is enough for me

as for the CPUs, that's just the norm at that size and form factor i guess

dell has the lattitude with a quad core and TB3, but it's $1000
>>
>>60538085
If that's what you want - you did mention you like the newer keyboard style, and you come from a macbook - go for it. I use a "gaming" laptop for when I need more horsepower than my thinkpad can provide, for instance.

But bear in mind that if that's what you're looking at, Lenovo offers very little to make it a must-buy. Do shop around other brands, compare prices. My asus has way better specs (i7-6700HQ and GTX 960M, 16GB RAM, 2TB HDD and 120GB SSD) and was barely more expensive. It does probably have worse battery life though, due to bigger screen (15.3'') and higher TDP CPU, and lacks some features like WWAN and, of course, the trackpoint.
What I'm trying to say, though, is the "thinkpad meme" is only for old thinkpads. Get a new one if you like, but because you carefully considered your options and decided it was best for you, not because you fell for the thinkpad meme.

the issue is that the quadro 1000m is the same used in the W520, so unless the processor is a step up, you're paying more for a machine with the same guts as the W520, just a different keyboard
>>
>>60538188
I did have a T400 for a short period of time, and it was a nice laptop for what it is. I don't care about the "thinkpad meme" though. The thinklight, 7-row keyboard, IBM logo are not motivations for my decision. i get that it's not going to be like the old ones

a tablet surface that small isnt that useful outside of a few specific things, full screen touch convertibles are much more useful.
The W700ds was really just a machine to showcase what it looks like if you shove too many features into a laptop.

If you really need a touch interface with your laptop/mobile workstation, its a better option to just get a proper wacom tablet and carry it around, they arent that big and work much better than an itty bitty one.
And space and weight are out the window when youre already carrying a massive laptop and power brick, and the tablet itself is about as thick as maybe the lid on the average laptop nowadays.

The wacom pad in the W700/701 is actually super useful. The size is totally adequate for retouching photos and basic sketching, and it's much more convenient than pulling out a separate dedicated tablet.

Thinking of getting a Thinkpad (or other). I do some heavy computing and computing and my current laptop (4 year old i3 Toshiba) is starting to fail. No need for a dedicated GPU, unless you can convince me.

Just looking for something that can handle a decent workload, such as test a script before sending it to the main workhorses. Been looking at the T470 but open to suggestions. I am not very familiar with laptop CPUs so the difference between the 7500U and 7600U don't seem to be worth 100$.

Budget: Around $1000
Location: USA
Size: 13" or more
Performance: High?
Other requirements: I like a full keyboard. Long battery life is nice but not a requirement. FHD or more would be nice but once again not a requirement.

basically, yeah. Ws come with quad core as standard, same for FHD display iirc. I think Ws also have double the ram slots compared to T-series.

Has anybody here tried fixing the speakers of a t420?
It's not really necessary but my left speaker doesn't work and I kind of feel autistic about it. Hopefully it's an easy fix.
>>
>>60544073
Does it come on at times? Could be a loose connection.
>>
>>60544073
Similar question. Has anyone ever heard of someone replacing the speakers on the x220/x230 with better quality ones?
I tried google but could only see people contemplating it and no actual builds.

The speakers on this are pretty awful, would love to get some better ones in here.

it's probably the connector. I had the same problem on my old Toshiba. Contact cleaner would help if you have one laying around. Isopropyl should be fine too.
>>
>>60544139
I don't think it's possible, anon.
>>
>>60544457
Damn.
>>
>>60544139
I actually swapped the speaker on my Nexus 5 for a SGS3 one. It's about 0.5mm thicker, but you can make it fit.
The thing is it sounds practically identical, probably because it's still in the same acoustic enclosure.

I'm guessing the same would happen with X220. Even if you did manage to take the plastic enclosures apart and find speakers that would fit in place of the old ones, I doubt if it would make a huge difference.
You'd need to 3D print whole new enclosures. Of course you'd have to design them so they would be better than Lenovo ones and fit in the space available in the X220/X230. Obviously you would need a 3D printer as well.
Seems like a lot of work for a little profit.
>>
>>60535507
They're great laptops anon. Good battery life, great keyboard, good repairability, they're cheap because people are trying to get rid of them and they're super comfy. You should try one if you can

I just realised I have probably been reading this wrong for years. Are those prices for the thinkpad with all its working pats (battery, HDD/SSD, charger etc) or just for a "boots, untested" one?
>>
>>60544977
Jack of all trades, master of none. A touch screen on a laptop is moderately useful (but in my personal opinion not worth the tradeoffs, e.g. price). A 2in1 sacrifices much more, such as specs, battery life, etc. While being much more expensive and usually still bulkier than a tablet.

Do you want good specs and a good keyboard? Get a laptop. Do you want a portable device with a tocuhscreen? Get a tablet, add a physical keyboard if you really want. Do you want neither? Get a 2in1.

It's not about having a reason to do so as much as not having a reason to do otherwise.

Sorry, don't mean to talk meta in an everyday general I've never been to, but like a new general might make another thread early cause they don't have standard traffic: only anyone who found the thread. So the numbers will dwindle after autosage.

But an established general might not see much change post or pre-autosage. So the time it's made wouldn't matter, I think. But an early one would be like, depends who cares enough to go for it.
