Are slide rules cool?
>>60519634
Yes, but kinda useless nowadays with electronics. I think scholls should incentive their use instead of normal calculators, at least in highschool.
>>60519634
Depending on application
>>60519768
I don't know if their use should be incentivized over calculators, but I definitely think students should be exposed to slide rules, abacuses, log tables, etc. to expand their understanding of math a little bit.
>>60519634
Yes. If you understand how they work it's concrete math.

> wew lets teach people something with 0 applicable usage
> schools aren't backwards enough as is lets send them further back
> lets use chalk and teach that the only way to prevent pregnancy is not to have sex
you should all kill yourselves.

I'm not saying we should devote entire semesters to it, but I think it would be beneficial to at some point say "alright class, this is a slide rule, it's an application of the common logarithms we just learned about, here's how they were used"
>>60520736
Does your school not use chalk?
>>60520736
Fucking faggot die in hell
>>60519634
I think they're cool.
No one manufactures slide rules any more, right?
>>60521305
No, but you can still buy new old stock.
>>60521320
Where?
>>60519634
hello students, let's use this useless shit with 2 accuracy, while 64-bit floats give you 16 digit accuracy
>>60520545
>log table
log tables are the only useful thing you've listed
>>60521405
It doesn't require batteries.

I bought my first one directly from Faber-Castell:

Can you name one circumstance in the physical sciences where sixteen significant figures are actually necessary to solve a problem?

>Can you name one circumstance in the physical sciences where sixteen significant figures are actually necessary to solve a problem?
Literally anything past grade school experiments. 2 significant digits is nothing.
>>60521472
anywhere where you normalize shit. because due to floating point nature it's more accurate between -1.0 and 1.0

> waaaa I don't like children being taught useful things
>>60520990
no?
>>60519768
I disagree. These rulers are extremely fast, you just slide the cursor. With my phone I have to pull it out, unlock it, wait for it to load, find the calculator, type numbers in and tell it to convert.
I used to think electronics were better too. But my friends always use paper and always have everything they need within reach while I have to open google drive and search for documents. I have a newfound respect for paper now.
