First for best keyboard layout
>>

That backspace is too small. If it had a shorter left shift instead that would've been better. Also that enter key is still too small. Microsoft had the right idea and gave all their ISO keyboards an extra 1u column
>>
Looks like Ducky has released firmware version 1.16 for backlit Ducky One fullsize keyboards, upgrading the macro functionality to Ducky Macro 2.0. Finally I can have media keys.
>>
>>60513754
Just bought a Redragon Vara for €35. Did I do good ?
Will be my first ever mechanical keyboard.
>>
>>60513801
that's nice. I wish they had some sort of software though that would make it easier to set complex macros for trading in MMOs
>>
>>60513799
It's really not a problem if you don't make too many mistakes.
Also, even if you do accidentally press back slash while going for backspace, you can just remove it by pressing backspace a few more times whereas putting it on top/left of a smaller enter key might have worse consequences if you do happen to press it accidentally
>>
I'm going to replace some broken switches on my Cherry MX board and I don't really have that much experience soldering.
Anything I need to know before I break something?
>>
>>60513818
Yeah its too bad that their dedicated software is only for the Shine 6 line of keyboards.I think even that software is only for accessing the full 16.8 million colour spectrum and macros have to be done with the hardware.
>>
>>60513754
I wish Mistel's Broccoli keyboard had a 2.25+1.25 and 2.75 split spacebar instead of 3 and 3.25 with stabilisers that are different from existing 3u ones so you can't use the aftermarket PBT 3u spacebars from Taobao.

Anyone bought a board with this year's revised Matias switches? I wonder if they already fixed that god-awful key chatter issue.

>tfw I just want a brown mechanical keyboard with a few macro keys and media keys
>almost nothing to choose from

Logitech G710+ seems like the best choice. K95 platinum looks OK too I guess, but it's almost double the price. Is it worth?
>>
>>60515442
Because I like springs in the 60-70g bottom out range
>>
>>60515274
>>60515645
The G710+ is fine but looks gamery and is a tad wide because of the slanted wing-like edges and inclusion of macro keys. Media keys are not mechanical but work well and the audio volume scroll is great. The glossy black plastic around the keys does get a bit grimey over time though.

Have you looked at Das Keyboard models such as the Das Keyboard 4 Ultimate? Corsair K70 (RGB or non-RGB) is another great one to consider.
>>
>>60515769
Neither of those have dedicated macro keys. Being able to open programs and dictionaries with the press of 1 button is a quality of life I refuse to be without.

It's a pretty good board. Well built.
>>
Things that bother you about mechanical keyboards, or the community?

For me it's primarily artisans and their cost. A lot of them look pretty bad from an artistic standpoint and seem to be turning into a way for a few people to make a quick buck. Some have been creating their own stockpiles of the rarer ones, making it difficult for others in general to obtain their own copies...

That and how difficult it is to get a lot of keysets/boards/artisans, even if you have the $$$ to pay for them. I've come to accept the fact that a lot of the keysets I want will largely be unavailable to me because I don't want to be spending so much of my disposable income on these things.
>>
>>60515833
Ah, fair enough, missed the dedicated macro keys part.
>>
>>60516420
I just wish more people were willing to make boards on a commission basis rather than only doing group buys. Sure it costs more but I'd happily pay the premium for availability.

Looking for something cheap I can take outside with me (for laptop use), that I will not worry about too much.
1) Budget
Would prefer <80$

2) Location
Europe

3) Preffered switch type
Have only ever used Black Cherry MX (on a SteelSeries 7G), really prefer silent as it's going to be for outside use, and I'm used to that anyway.
Will be used for typing 95% of the time so I guess something tactile would be good? (have not used a tacticle keyboard before)

4) Layout
QWERTY

5) Form factor
<80%, looking for something as small as possible

6) Backlight
Would prefer not to have a backlight, but don't really care.

7) Previous/current keyboard
I am happy with the 7G (and it has served me nicely for well over 5 years, only spacebar having slight issues sometimes), but I'm open to suggestions, as I have not tried anything else.

>>
>>60517272
not without going custom. the closest would be a 75% layout keyboard plus a left hand side numpad or macro pad.
>>

Some Ducky and Cooler Master keyboards have 4 macro keys above the numpad that you can program however you want. The keyboards are also programmable so if you want more macro keys it is possible. I didn't need pause break so I used it as a macro.

But if you typing a lot you might need some tactile switches, blue or brown (or clear) might suit your need.

regardless of what he thinks he prefers he shouldn't have a numpad, at least it should be a masterkeys pro m not a fullsize board. if he's literally an accountant or something like that he can get a standalone numpad.

Keyswitch manufacturers use different colors of plastic to visually distinguish different switch models. Otherwise they'd all look the same despite varied internal construction.

He's referring to Cherry MX switches, and most Chinese Cherry clones also follow suit with the same colors to avoid confusion.

Blue = low weight, clicky and tactile
Brown = low weight, slightly tactile and non-clicky
Clear = moderate weight, a little more tactile and non-clicky
>>
>>60524694
Blue have high pitch clicky sound while brown only make sound if bottom out. Clear is brown with more tactile and more stiff key.

It should be noted that tactility is a relative thing. All Cherry switches have mediocre tactility compared to highly tactile switches like buckling springs or tactile ALPS switches.
The tactility of browns is barely perceptible, which is why people refer to it as a grit of sand at best.

Gateron clears though are a good example of an exception to the rule of sticking to Cherry's color-coding scheme.
Rather than being mid-weight tactile non-clicky switches like Cherry clears, they're ultra-lightweight linear switches.

yesterday I was on here saying you could use RIT dye to dye your PBT and model M caps. I need to say I was sorta misleading to a degree after trying iDye Poly because it is vastly superior.

the yellow keys are BROWN RIT. the dark chocolate ones are the iDye Poly brown. I did multiple washes with RIT brown to end up with that yellow color. The orange keys are also RIT. Notice the iDye completely obscured the legends while the RIT keys have perfectly visible legends (that might be preferred to some?) While I was able to get some of the RIT to bleed into the keys using white vinegar and salt--it ended up being really light and pastel, the iDye was absorbed into the polymer right way (boiled for not even 5 minutes).

I'm probably going to buy a full key set from unicomp and have another go at it with what I know now. Be weary dark colors come out VERY dark, but light colors tend to stay vibrant and true to how they seem in liquid form. iDye Poly is the way to. Use distilled water and thoroughly clean your keys and you'll get a super even dye coloring as long as you put in all the keys at the same time. You can still use RIT (probably better on ABS than PBT) just know that it will take a long time, will need white vinegar and salt in varying quantities, and will almost always end up lighter. you will however-retain the legends almost always.

It was super easy to do and I know it works at lower temp for ABS too, try it out for your own custom color sets it's really fun :)

Life expectancy of outemus are not really tested/documented, so you might break em within a year or so.

Hm. I was just asking because of this $43 chinkshit TKL: https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Mechanical-Enthusiasts-Backlighting-Double-shot/dp/B01M301Q50/

It looks decent for the price point, and the caps are even doubleshot which was surprising, but I just don't know if the outemu blues are shit or not. For $43 it may not hurt to just give it a shot anyway.
>>
Going all out with my first mechanical keyboard, I'm about to order a fc900r with cherry blue switches.
I'm somewhat worried about the click noise, would getting O-rings help somewhat, or is it a waste of money at this point?
Also, should I get a keycap puller?
I only ask because getting them shipped after the keyboard will be too costly, both time and money
>>
>>60517272
>get the keyboard
>put the two halves together

Split is legit anyway, it's not natural for your hands to be held so close together, you end up having to extend at least one shoulder
>>
>>60530254
O-ring only reduce bottomed out sound (clack), high pitch clicky sound remain.
>>
>>60530254
O-rings won't make much difference with blue switches; the click is going to be the main source of noise anyway, and that happens at the activation point. If you don't want noise, don't get clicky switches.

You don't need a keycap puller because you can just make one out of a paperclip or a bent piece of wire. All it is are 2 loops of wire that hook over opposite edges/corners of a key, so you can pull off the cap by lifting it straight up rather than pushing it to the side.

>going all out
Obviously means different things to different people, but I'd say if you had an unlimited budget and were willing to get a noisy keyboard, a Kishsaver model F would be the best keyboard available today.
>>
>>60530254
>Going all out with my first mechanical keyboard
That's not going all out m8, the fc900r is a very basic mid range keyboard, o-rings only cost 2 bucks for a couple hundred, a quick google search will answer your question about noise, and finally you don't need a keycap puller since two paper clips and some tape work just fine

>>
>>60524825
No it isn't.
>>
>>60530374
Also, from youtube videos I didn't notice much difference between blue and brown noise unless you type perfectly without bottoming out, ever

>>
>>60530374
NP

>$150
Too bad the Kishsaver's over $400... Your first mecahnical keyboard could have also been the last one you ever needed to buy.

Not that you can't get something great for $150. Honestly, you probably can get something similar in quality to that fc900r for only $80-90. Have you considered some cheaper options? If you find something like a rosewill on amazon, you could get it for ~85, and then spend the rest of your budget on high quality keycaps.
>>
>>60530434
That sounds like an artifact from the video. Blues are massively louder than browns in reality. I'd advise going to any sort of electronics store and typing a few sentences on a clicky and non-clicky mechanical keyboard.

I'm using buckling springs right now, and everyone who hears it says "damn that's a fucking loud keyboard" (I think it's only slightly louder than blues). I also have an MX black keyboard that basically sounds normal and wouldn't raise any eyebrows. Browns would be more like that.

Basically, browns won't sound any louder than your current cheap keyboard (and may even be quieter), but blues definitely will be louder.

I must admit the a good portion of my budget is going towards getting the keyboard shipped. I live in a shithole and according to mechanicalkeyboards.com getting the fc900r shipped to me would cost ~$45, that's like a third of the keyboard's price
This is the reason I'm trying to get absolutely everything right the first time. I want to avoid any possible returns, new orders etc.

I just checked out rosewill, looks really good, and cheap too. How does it fare against leopold in build quality? Getting a set of PBT keycaps on the same order won't be a problem if I go that route, i think.
Also, how's ducky one? mechanicalkeyboards seem to have one up for preorder that also comes with PBT from the get go
I just want the best keyboard for my money here, 10 20 dollar difference won't matter if it's worth it.

>>60530478
I just went back to youtube and found this video on switches: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qp46JeDDTCw
The blue definitely sound different now, the brown switch also seemed like a little unnatural when pressing, I could sense a little friction in the video. Are browns like that?

From how I see it, Blue or Brown is my only option because I know I don't want red and clear seems to be non existent on cheap keyboards.
I don't think I will have problem with the noise myself, but not having any reservation when typing in the middle of the night seems nice

>Rosewill
Rosewill feels very well-built, and is a heavy keyboard. My MX black keyboard is a rosewill and it's still going strong after 3.5 years. I won't say it's entirely perfect, because rarely I've had it seem to have issues disconnecting from the USB port... but I haven't had that happen for over a year now, and it may not have even been the keyboard's fault. Apart from that, I would fully recommend the rosewill.

A ducky one may have higher QA, but I haven't used one and wouldn't know, sorry. I'm sure someone else in this thread can tell you more about that, though, since it's a popular board here.

>Are browns like that?
Yes, browns have a "tactile bump", which will cause a bit of extra friction at the point where the key actually registers as being pressed. (See the pic, if you haven't already seen it.) A lot of people actually complain that this bump isn't big enough on MX browns.

Cheap MX clear keyboards do exist, but only in chinkshit that nobody's ever tested. Gateron brown switches are fairly close to MX clear switches, and you may have better luck looking for those if you want something tactile. If you're lucky they'll be even cheaper. But once again, you'll probably need to wade through a bunch of chinkshit that may not have as high of build quality if you're looking for something with gateron browns.
>>
>>60530895
I hope you aren't joking cause I spent a good 10 minutes looking into chink shipping rates, and you'd be better of buying something like an RK pro 104 from alliexpress.
>>
>>60531039
Aliexpress doesn't ship to Iran, I'd have to pay some middle man to get it over here which would practically double the shipping cost. not much difference from purchasing from anywhere else
Also, I want a keyboard with good QA, which chinkshit wouldn't have.

Right now I have my eyes on a ducky one available for preorder. hopefully I decide on the switch type by the time it gets in stock, but I'm leaning towards brown atm

Thanks for everyone's help btw

Not that guy, but I have a question:

Do I have to re-learn typing? I learned on a domed, now I have cherry mx browns, so I feel when I hit the actuation point, but when I try not to bottom out, I get really slow for my taste. Bashing away feels much better. What do?
>>
>>60536598
Releasing the key on actuation is faster once you get the hang of it, but at least if you bash away on a mech board the ramping resistance from the spring reduces the force transmitted to your tendons when you do bottom out.

hi, looking for a 60% cherry mx blue/black/brown board and switches. preferably in a kit i can buy in australia under $150 with white LED backlighting
>>
>>60541326
this is not a realforce. this is just a type heaven with rgb. it doesn't deserve to be called a realforce, it's just topre's attempt to buy into the gamer market. they did the same thing by offering the hhkb type-s in JIS ISO format, by trying to buy into the jp market where some people do prefer JIS layouts over ANSI even though the majority of japanese actually use ANSI anyway.

If you find exchanging your money for a luxury item something worth complaining about, then maybe you shouldn't be buying that thing in the first place. Otherwise suck it up and be glad about how cheap chinkboards are nowadays. Get a victsing, or a magicforce with gaterons if you want something with actual quality.

Pretty hard to get used to the noise it makes, but it feels solid. The most annoying thing about it so far though is that backlight settings are reset on PC restart.

I think they have stopped producing it now. It is a little large dues to the media keys, but overall it is a great keyboard.

It has pre-installed o rings to reduce the sound they keys make so is fairly quiet. The keyboard as some USB ports in the back which allow for usb pass though, but this makes the cable they use very thick and stiff so that might affect the placement and usage of the keyboard.

The scroll for the volume is really nice.
