I want a thinkpad.
I intend to purchase a thinkpad in the near future.
I will soon have a thinkpad (lord willing).

I may buy 2 thinkpads.

Weird problem I'm hoping someone can help me with. I've got a T410, run Linux on it. Sometimes when I type the screen flicks to black, really quickly, like a quick flicker not a blank, if that makes sense. It happens regardless of distro (or version of the same distro) so I'm starting to think it's a hardware issue.


Is it possibly a / the screen cable loose and typing sometimes disturbs it or something? I thought maybe it could be but if I tap around the keyboard / case it doesn't do it.


Could it be the battery, somehow? acpi -i says it's at 45% design capacity and it takes ages to charge, so it's definitely on the way out. Doubt it could have anything to do with this.


Help me /tpg/, you're my only hope. I've searched for the last half hour and found fuck all.

I always used gelid gc extreme.

it's a bit more expensive than arctic mx4 but in every test I found, it's always been below thermal grizzly and coolaboratory. Which I believe are the best thermal compounds but the problem is they are conductive and I'd rather not risk it.

arctic silver 5 has been deprecated for many years..

Agree-- having messed with several, the newer generations of LCDs that are much thinner are really fragile outside the lid, and if you don't mount 'em just right, they're fragile in the lid too.

Also, most of the the Chinese sources do, in fact, a pretty crappy job. Not all, but definitely most.

Question is, if it's the GPU, what are my options? It's a discrete GPU, so is there any way I can just remove it and have my laptop still work? Will there still be one integrated into the motherboard?

I didn't RMA, as I bought it on ebay. There wasn't anything technically wrong with it, it just wasn't nice to use. I mainly do 3D modeling/CAD. Immediately prior, I used a 2015 15" MBP.

- flimsy feel, especially super-flexy screen
- disproportionately weak GPU (M2000M).
- mediocre display quality (4K model)
- uninspiring keyboard, but not worse than other current TP models

Some of this is bias compared to earlier thinkpads, but it was still enough to make me not want it. It felt unworthy of the thinkpad name.

after selling the P50, I got a Surface Book, which has a drastically better display and a slightly faster GPU at the cost of a weak dual-core CPU and lack of modularity. I sold this one as well, mainly because of the fragility and weak CPU.

I'm using an X62 now, but the CPU is still very limiting.

I recently acquired a "broken" t40 from my workplace
The display wasn't working and would cause the laptop to shut down 2 seconds after powering on
(no POST)
I managed to get it working by plugging an external monitor, and tested the whole system using the PC-TOOL, all components are good.
Thus the LCD must be the problem.
I teardownthe the laptop, disconnect and reconnect the video connector and the lcd power connector beside it.
The result is that now, it powers up (fan spinning, power and battery icon) but doesn't POST. HMM says that I should check every connector. The only connector I didn't check is the VGA connector at the back of the lcd panel.
Could it be the problem or I somehow managed to kill the motherboard ?

I'd like to try out an os & laptop that respect your freedom - planning on buying a X60 and librebooting it.

I have a T430 as my main machine which i use for anything "demanding" - the X60 would only be used for messing around mostly with CLI tools and maybe a graphical web browser.

you're delusional. majority of people that come around here are looking for cheap anime/internet/programming machines that don't suck shit. you don't need a fucking quad core to run a web browser and text editor, and anyone working on decent-sized projects will have a proper build machine for the heavy lifting. why bother with a 12.5" laptop for an eGPU setup? doesn't make any sense, it's stationary anyway, you might as well go for the biggest machine with the best cooling possible. within the 12.5" class sure it's better for eGPU, but to buy an ultraportable and then shackle it to a desktop GPU seems foolish.

dose anything exist that would allow me to put my cellphones sim card in a adapter for a Express Card Slot and use its 3g/lte?

Will the i5-2520m or 2540m run psx emulation with retroarch? I'm getting slowdowns testing it, (I think on a 2540m, haven't checked to see which one it is exactly) and I was wondering if that was just a hardware limitation or retroarch in general.

You know, I read all this bashing and shit-shoving with the EliteBook and the ThinkPad shills and I forget at times which site I am on. But anyways.

What I came to ask is: is there any way to get a i7-3632QM (if that's the model) or a i7-3840QM that doesn't cost $200 freedombux + $35 shipping? I've tried eBay, but as far as it goes, it seems I will have to spend even more for this upgrade. I don't really plan for anything else besides the FHD screen and maybe a mSATA for booting the system a bit faster, but that's about it.

And yes, I have considered leenoocks, but I haven't made a decision just yet. Everyone bashes on Ubuntu even though it isn't that bad; MATE looks good for me.

Running VMs, and better performance with SolidWorks simulations, since we're probably getting into that later.
If it was for games I'd have gotten a desktop PC; this one runs most if not all the games I like at decent framerates. Even emulators such as benisnes run smoothly.

Not really sure if I would see a major improvement from my current i5-3320M, though...

Just got an X200 and I have never been happier.

So my X220 refuses to turn on.

The day before yesterday it didn't wake from sleep properly, I figured I'd fucked up something at the os level after tinkering with my void install and a force reboot should fix things. However, I went to do other stuff and just left it plugged in like that.
Now it's off for some reason and just won't turn on at all.

Is the last Thinkpad P series worth the money? I would like a laptop with an HQ processor (and integrated HD 630) without dedicated gpu but they always shove an nvidia quadro in them.

I was also looking at the more efficient T series, but I don't understand with they often couple them with an optional nvidia 940MX, which seems to offer similar performances to the integrated HD 620.
