I'm absolutely in love with this 18 carat, rose gold TAG Heuer Carrera watch purchased from the beautiful city of Perth. Made with sapphire infused glass that only diamond can scratch, I've spoiled myself with this gorgeous timepiece. The calibre 16 movement has been crowned as the most successful automatic chronograph movement ever produced, completely handmade by man. It is also my very first day date watch and it will be interesting to see if it becomes an important feature that Will depend on over time. I hope you all enjoy this watch as much as I do.

never forget how rolex discontinued the 114270 (36mm) variant with beautiful proportions and that deep inky black gloss dial for that swollen piece of shit 214270 with the lame dark grey dial and midget t-rex hands lol

then when called out on buying a piece of shit watch rolex was too lazy and cheap to make new hands for butthurt buyers vehemently defended the retarded dwarf hands and mangled proportions.

7 years later and the new 214270 comes out fixing rolex's mistake and half the t-rex owners sell out for the new one whilst the others bitterly hold onto their stunted, recycled hands models that are now worthless on the 2nd hand market because it looks stupid and hurl invective at the new, fixed explorer 1 with the "ugly oversized hands"

the hands don't even reach the minute track lmao

My mother wants a watch for her birthday.
She says she wants a skeleton watch. Her choice, not mine. I don't want to buy her some cheap chinese shit though.
Are there any classy womens skeleton type watches? Preferable from a known brand. Doesn't need to be swiss obviously, she knows shit all about watches. Sekonda or something would be fine, just for my own peace of mind.
My budget is £150 max.
I know this is quite a niche question but any help is appreciated.

The only non-shit exposed type watches I can think of that are womens models are from orient. But they're not skeleonised, they're "open heart" (fucking hate that term).

They will be the only quality examples out there I think. Skeleton watches are either cheapo chink junk or ultra high end haute horologie, funnily enough. Not really anything decent in the lower to upper mid ranges. Maybe shit in the 1k to 2k "swiss" made segment, but that's blowing your budget, and wouldn't be worth it regardless.

It's chinkshit or something else for your mumsies.

Do you care about movements at all? If so, the in-house is massively better than an ETA 2824-2. I wouldn't even consider spending Tudor money on an ETA 2824-2, personally.
>>
>>60501665
The 39mm Explorer I is a fucking atrocity.
>>
>>60501490
>Looking to buy a used Tudor Black Bay. Is the in-house movement worth the premium over ETA 2824?
I haven't read enough about the new movement to be able to say, but as for the ETA, well, it's not just plain jane 2824 plopped in.

They do modify a top grade eta (so, not-yet-cosc certified) movement, and by modify I mean they do more than the usual suspects (e.g. Tag) where "modified calibres" are just stock ETA with a customised rotor or something.
They remove the stock anti-shock system and replaced it with the one Rolex was fond of using before they switched to their own innovation, paraflex. They switch out some other smaller stuff but basically there's no real difference between this modified tudor calibre and the stock top-grade ETA.

If anything the stock eta might be easier for a watchmaker to work on. I don't know for sure.

However, the eta-based black bays have a the standard 2824 power reserve of like 30-somethning hours. The in-housey house has 70 hours. That's a whole weekend's worth. That's an advantage in my eyes, unless this is your only watch and you won't be rotating it with somthing else every so often.

The greater power reserve means that the case is thicker, not by much but I noticed it trying it on. Also, I'll miss the rose on the old dial. They put that stupid fucking
:DDDDD shield there instead.

Drawbacks of the inhouse movement are as with all new inhouse movements if you're not willing to rely on manufacturer service: are independents familiar with it and can they get necessary parts?

I like the red because there's not enough red watches that are acutally decent. The blue is boring and generic. It's not a nice blue anyway. For me, I'd be looking at the black or the red.
>>
>>60501763
I agree with this anon, plus the dial is ugly in his opinion. I prefer the newer more rugged case.
>>
>>60501763
"massively better" is an overstatement at best It does have a greater power reserve and some high end movement features at a reasonable price but it doesn't actually perform much better ( if at all) at actually keeping time; It is also thicker... I woul personally go with the in house movement as well but people really over blow the in house vs eta thing. ETA makes very very high quality watch movements.

>silicon hairspring

The Tudor in-house caliber is more or less on par with a Rolex 313x. I think you would find that the consensus opinion would be that the Rolex 313x and Tudor in-house movements are a step up in design, features, finishing and inherent accuracy than an ETA 2892-A2, and the ETA 2892-A2 is universally agreed to be a significant step up from the ETA 2824-2.

The ETA 2824-2 simply does not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the Tudor in-house movement. But again, as I said, not everyone is super interested in the technical merits of the movements in their watches.

>>
>>60502666
But the ETA in a Black Bay is not a Steinhart movement, and the Tudor movement in a Black Bay is not a Rolex movement.
The way a movement keeps time is down to regulation more than anything, and it's not like Tudor spends ten times as much time regulating their in-house movement as they did previously.
>>
>>60502448
>>60502666

look I understand that and it is a better movement but top grade 2824 can be tested and certified as a chronometer by the COSC. It is a high quality accurate Swiss movement... features you mentioned like silicon hairspring and free sprung balance wheels are good features and certainly put the Tudor movement in a different league but it doesn't really make it a more accurate or even a more durable movement. ETA has perfected their design and execution of that design in manufacture and QC. The ETA movements are not shit by any stretch of the imagination and it really upsets me that so many of you put your noses up at ETA for no apparent reason.

They've gone up in price by a lot (too much) over the past decade.

People get pulled into omega marketing because of bond films and other shit, can't afford the new ones, go on ebay for some cheaper vintage stuff. Plenty of pooinloo redialers peddling their shit to retards that don't do their research. And if you go to a vintage watch dealer you're going to get reamed, and that's if they're a trustworthy one.

I think vintage omega's are up. You want a nice vintage watch? Start looking at other brands that have fallen by the wayside, less chance of frankens and other tomfoolery.

If you're an american, look at the dead american brands; they made some truly wonderful pieces that the swiss have been in no small hurry to bury and let people forget about. They go for cheap now, too.

>Is 2007 the very last year Rolex produced the 2-line 14060M?
2006 to early 2007, as they changed the 14060m halfway through the Z serial (July 06 to Dec 07). It remained thus until it was discontinued a few years, and serials, later. They introduced parachom blue hairspring in an apparently inconsistent fashion after the change to the 4liner/retarded rehaut. I don't know of any pattern. Perhaps the last 14060M's made will definitely have the new hairspring.

I know that there are Z serial 14060M's with the COSC 4line dial and the retarded *ROLEXROLEXROLEXROLEX* rehaut, and there are Z serial 2liner's without all the bullshit.

Never seen a 2liner with the rehaut, so I'm guessing that it was introduced late run when they ruined the submariner by making it COSC certified and printing the usual novella on the dial.

If you get a Z series 2 liner 14060M, it shouldn't have the rehaut, and will probably have been made in 2006/early 2007.

$250 - $500: Seiko Presage, Seiko divers, Miyota 9015 microbrands
$500 - $750: Seiko SARX
$750 - $1,500: Seiko Presage chronographs, ETA Damaskos
$1,500 - $3,000: Grand Seiko quartz
$3,000 - $4,000: In-house Tudor, In-house Damasko, entry level Grand Seiko mechanical, DUW Nomos
$4,000 - $5,000: Grand Seiko mechanicals, entry level Rolex (NO oversize versions)

I also have this and a Lemania 5100 Speedmaster from before Omega became complete pleb-catching trash.

Nice try though. Breitling is ghastly looking and only the B01 is technically defensible, and Omega is almost totally indefensible beyond the MOTM and the FP1185 based chronographs.
>>
>>60513384
>Breitling and Omega are shit except for the watches they make which are good

Yeah, that's kind of the point.
>>
>>60513409
One Breitling model and two Omega models are not nearly enough to list them as approved BRANDS. 99% of the watches both companies make are pleb-catchers.

Not to mention that AP should be removed entirely from the approved brands under haute horlogerie. At a minimum ALS should be added to that section.

The $500 - $3,000 section is missing Seiko for the higher end Presage models as well as Damasko.
>>
>>60513466
>Not to mention that AP should be removed entirely from the approved brands under haute horlogerie. At a minimum ALS should be added to that section.

Definitely this.

Also modern Omega dog shit, vintage Omega great.

Do people even buy Tudor and Zenith ?
>>
>>60513522
Tudor has never been so popular, they can't make enough black bays to feed the masses.
>>
>>60513522
Tudor's new in-house movement is really nice. Puts them into a totally different league than they were before when they were insulting their customers with tarted up ETA 2824s (there was no excuse for them not using 2892s at those pricepoints).
>>
>>60513466

Most of the Breitling chronographs are switching to their in-house, column wheel chronographs. PLus they have the in-house world time watch. They're definitely getting better with time and their ETA-based watches are modified and actually finished well for their price. I hate most of their designs but that is entirely subjective.

Omega does nice finishing too and their ETA movements are all modified. It's a tough fucking price category.

Damasko is obscure and have fun getting it serviced. A noob's guide does not need special snowflake shit.

Lange is a specialty brand along the lines of FP Journe, Greubel Forsey, etc. and is too niche and too small in production figures to be included in a generalized guide for noobs. Getting mad (regardless of the category) that your obscure pet brands are not included in what is obviously intended to be a very basic, beginners guide shows signs of legitimate, non-meme autism.
>>
>>60513151
No IWC, Paneria, Piaget, Blancpain, Hublot, Longines, Ulysse Nardin, Cartier or Chopard.
>>
>>60513576
Breitling's are all hideous except for the Navitimer and that's the only defensible B01 chrono purchase.

And you can fuck off with that bullshit about Omega. A $4,000 aqua terra literally has worse finishing than my $500 Seiko Brightz, not to mention co-axial being a fucking meme timebomb.

Damasko makes ETA powered models using all of their high end casing technologies for $1,000. They deserve inclusion as serious tool watches at a fair price.

Lange is generally mentioned in the same breath as PP and VC and you know it. AP has spent the last 10 years turning into Hublot and no longer deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as ALS, PP and VC.

>>60513591
IWC, Panerai, Hublot, Longines, and Ulysse Nardin are all pleb catching garbage and them being excluded is one of the list's strengths.

No because even if the Rolex models are UGLY they are still made to a high standard of quality.

I use the term pleb catchers for watches where the the manufacturing of the watch is seen as a cost center to be minimized, while marketing a brand image is seen as the primary revenue generator. These watches are marketed to non-watch people who won't have the experience to.realize how badly they are being ripped off.
>>
>>60513706
Look, it's not that I personally find that watch attractive, but it is the definitional slide rule pilot's chronograph and gets a pass purely based on the history of the design. I'd never buy one, but it is at least defensible.

Yeah I don't get it. Plebs would never have ever heard of IWC or UN. Pleb catching is super mass marketed junk, like Tag, Tissot etc. I wouldn't include rolex there even though it's the most well-known luxury watch brand out there (guy with a rolex and guy with a patek , 10/10 times people will recognise the rolex and think the patek wearer has some cheapo watch on because rolex is "the best in the world!" by their reckoning.) and I don't see their ads fucking everywhere like the former 2 and others. Rolex doesn't even have to advertise anymore because to the average pleb it's the height of watchmaking, perhaps slightly above the Tag the salesman reassures them is "almost as good as a rolex! But cheaper!". That's pleb catcher to me.

I'd be almost inclined to include Omega in pleb catcher territory these days, but it's at least better than tag shit.

Throw a mass made pocket watch movement into an oversized case and let Stallone market it to the Asian wristlets and balding, midlifecrisisers in the West and you've got a recipe for success.

Look up the Panerai Brooklyn Bridge fiasco for keks, and from then onwards ever laugh in the face of any moron dumb enough to buy a Panerai.

It's a high end, high accuracy thermoadjusted quartz from september 1976 or 1986. I would guess '76.
That case looks like it's polished afterwards though, be careful.

It's a Seiko Suwa rather than a Seiko Daini, the Suwas are a little more generic in case and bracelet design whereas the Daini are much more unique and, I feel, are thus more desirable when buying a high end quartz watch from the late 70s. The way to tell them apart is that Suwa use a stylised whirlpool logo and Daini a lightning bolt.

Shit, it's worse than I remember and seems to get worse every time I see it.
The supreme irony of this being that there are no-name panerai knockoffs and, I would assume, outright fakes that have better looking movements than that piece of fucking shit.

>>60515123
>Phuuuck me dead that is some Vostok tier phinishing right there mate.

>finishing
It's not finished at all, it's straight out of a Swatch factory by way of Shanghai or Bangkok, and plopped into a case with a retarded caseback engraving. It's a slur against Boctok to even mention them in the same sentence.

There are modern instances of companies fucking up big time, Tag and Bremont's "in-house" movements debacles being perhaps the most recent and hilarious, and occurrences where watchmakers have treated their customers with utter contempt (Patek, JLC et.al, but in regards to servicing only and QC; at least the product was good when it was working properly) but this incident takes the fucking cake.

Richemont really did their market research: only the mentally retarded want and buy Panerai, and they acted accordingly.

Talking generally here as I didn't look at the watch in question, but polishing steel (or gold for that matter) usually results in a shitshow unless it's done by the likes of Rolex or AP's refinishing department, and even they have been known to fuck up and they're the experts.

A steel watch can only be polished so many times before it looks like crap, and that's only if it's being polished by super competent hands in the first place; one shitty job can ruin it for good. Gone are the fine angles and contours, it's all a mush.

A badly polished, or over polished watch lowers its value, and thus its re-sale value. You don't want to get ripped off.

One thing people tend to forget when looking at vintage, valuable watches is overpolishing or bad polish jobs.

This is a generalisation for all watches; I don't know anything about the value and collectability of vintage seiko quartz watches off ebay.

If their watches are listed As "condition:0" it means they're grey market goods. Perhaps the manufacturers don't have as good a hold of Italian retailers that then dump their excess stock on the Italian grey market? Or perhaps Italy is the easy grey dumping ground for the European markets? I dunno.

Even a Hong Kong grey dealer I know of boasts about getting its stock from Italy.

Old style:

S E I K O
GS
Grand Seiko
Automatic

New style:

GS
Grand Seiko
Automatic

Not only does the new style get rid of the stupid redundancy ("seiko" was literally on the dial twice), but it also gets rid of that generic S E I K O logo that has no place on the upper-end.

This new style literally put me over the edge, I'm definitely getting a grand seiko now.
