Let's see what everyone is running. discussions of overclocking performance and such. ill start.

6800K running 4.3 of 1.27V, would push it further but the voltage requirement goes up by 0.13V per 100MHz overclocked after my clock. wish i could go further but would like to have a cpu in 6 months time kek

eBay, for about half that, and sometimes I do bump it up. But usually I prefer better efficiency, as it's partially solar powered and I do a lot of long-running computations. At night, I lock it at the lowest multiplier (1.2 GHz) and it runs all six cores at full load for a whopping six watts of power usage. I wish I could put this thing in my laptop and just run it at low speeds...

turn it up s'more if you have the cooling.

Lower binned chip so it needs a little more vcore than a k at the same speeds. Usually run it 24/7 at 103.7 bclk 1.15-1.2v, all c states enabled.

shut down some background processes and got a nice round number

Is zen1 very voltage limited?
>>
>>60492348
You can up the voltage to a rather crazy 1.45V, but temps start to get very problematic there, and at that voltage you can reach 4.1, *some* gold chips can hit 4.2. Generally 3.9 and 4.0 can be hit easily on air, 3.9 on a stock Spire cooler even.
>>
>>60492348

I don't think so. What you are seeing in this thread is alot of false reporting. I got my R7 1700 a week after launch and people were reporting 3.8 @ 1.385 volts so I got it and just turned it to that. I noticed I could lower the voltage no problem but I figured I might as well just leave it as it was proving stable already.

I have seen people with way lower voltage hitting 3.9 and 4.0. I just don't feel like messing with it as it is already a great product and I am glad I made the purchase over the 7700k I was considering.

process (14nm finfet) limited tbqh. this is pretty much evident by ryzen being maxed out at 4.1ghz regardless how much voltage you pump into it. even then 4.1ghz, let alone 4ghz, is hard to achieve. similar to polaris. polaris refresh showed how polaris first generation was processed limited with amd only changing to a more mature 14nm process allowed them to raise the clocks by ~200mhz without altering voltages nor modifying polaris itself. my sapphire nitro+ limited edition runs at 1450mhz with the same voltage my sapphire nitro+ 480 needed for 1306mhz.

no, its not. zen will run up to 1.5v's on auto settings with performance boost and xfr (if your sku has it) enabled. but only for short bursts to maintain boost speeds. so on two cores, as long as usage stays below ~10% it will run at your boost speed using between 1.4 - 1.5v's for a short awhile. if you do something that constantly loads a small, 5% load for example, repeatedly, such as a program putting a 5% load and removing after a second on no more than two threads, only to redo it a few seconds later, you will get a constant load of 1.4-1.5v's since your processor is quickly changing between stock and boost speed. but once you tax the cores, such as putting on a 15-20% load , regardless how many threads are being used, and keeping it there, the voltages will drop to 1.2X - 1.3Xv range.

at idle voltage, idle meaning no load, will drop down to the 0.Xv range.

tldr, on average if you record voltage usage with something like hwinfo, you will see ryzen averaging around 0.8v's idle, leaving the screen off. 1.1-1.2v's, is using the machine lightly like firefox, music, and movies. 1.2-1.3v's if doing something moderate and above. like abusive stress test, gaming, rendering, compiling, streaming, and such.

0 most likely. I don't have ryzen but I'm experienced with oc. set manual voltage, all c-states etc off. and stress the cpu. if vcore is lower then specified, increase llc. if it's higher, decrease llc. a slight vdroop or overshoot is fine. If vdroop make sure there is no whea errors. If overshoot make sure it doesn't spike over max safe voltage. (not a problem at 1v)

This is the lowest voltage I could get on this OC. It should be fine if the machine isn't on 24/7 right?
>>
>>60499441
Impossible to tell just by looking at numbers. Each chip is different, and applying general rules wouldn't answer your question.

Torture it with prime95, see how often it crashes and whether you're fine with that frequency.
And decide for yourself if it's "fine if the machine isn't on 24/7".

i really don't get how cpu-z has such a low reference score for the 1800x at supposed stock settings. i have my 1800x 100% at stock settings. whole reason why i bought an 1800x was because i didn't want to overclock. 1800x boosts very high and comes stock with a high frequency. yet i score much higher than what cpu-z has as an reference.

ok i call horseshit on cpu-z. a 7600k has stronger single threaded than a 6700k???? that makes zero sense. both single threaded turbo boost IS 4.2ghz on both the 6700k and 7600k. reviews after reviews showed CLOCK for CLOCK skylake and kaby are 100% identical. not a single damn difference. there were extensive reviews that solely focused on clock for clock to prove this. and that multi-threaded.... that's way to close for comfort. the 6700k should be way higher in multi compared to the 7600k.

after cpu-z "fixed" its benchmark because "amd" now all of a sudden kaby lake is so much faster than skylake as well? kaby was nothing more than a skylake refresh with a new chipset for "muh optane!!""

>>
>>60504639
I've personally tested this thing to 4.5GHz stable on a mere 212 Evo as well albeit at housefirs-tire 94c range
It's still hot but usable at 4.3GHz on the Justice at the high 70s/low 80s, and 4.6GHz is probably possible if i get bored
The thing with Westmere/Nehalem is the sheer amount of heat and power they use, and I often shift my OCs from 4.0-4.4 depending on what I need simply since my room can get so hot by a 200w+ heat source

I can't really imagine needing more that a 1366 hexa either for fucking years, it'll be a long time before 6c12t of that singlethread performance is too weak for games and normal programs.

Of course I can see people doing lots of enconing and image processing for a living needing better tho.

Be aware that unless its a higher end/buisness laptop, the cooling solution and power supply may strugle with an i7 from a i3..
I got a acer 15.6" back in 2010 with a 1.gen i3 and threw a i7 720 in there and holy fuck did that thing get hot!
It smelled warm plastic everytime I did something tasking on it :P

Eventually sold the i7 and went back to the i3 without any performance hit I could notice, as when I'm traveling I pretty much only use it for 4chan and email + some youtube.

One thing I found worth doing tho, was changing out that shitty fucking high gloss bullshit display thats useless unless you sit in absolute darkness. Fuck that shit, matty is heaven compared.

How'd I do /g? Got it used for $270 from bhphotovidya, haven't tried OCing yet cause it's already fast enough for me. Temps reach 62c max while stress testing so I think the previous owner might have delidded it or something.

Surprised how cool and quiet it is since all I've been reading recently is how bad the 7700k IHS TIM is. Hope I can hit the 5ghz epeener if I need it later down the line.

It's a way to get a cheap 7700K, not bad. But I would still get an R5 1600 or 1600X at that price.

What do you use to cool this shit? I'm >>60500921 and want to know more since I want to get the absolute most out of my own Xeon
>>
>>60508303
You'll be able to hit it if you get an NH-D15.

Reference speeds are from Day 1
It's not some sort of massive jewish conspiracy

People have been pushing to get them changed but CPU-Z devs are saying maybe but it's fucking retarded to update scores over and over again everytime Ryzen gets an update. I personally think they should keep those scores the way they are. then you can see how far you've come from day 1
>>
>>60509032
then they should add a disclaimer. though i do admit, i love my 1800x, but amd should have waited till june to release.

come on senpai, you can do at least 4ghz guaranteed.

I wish there were a good equivalent to CPU-Z on linux. lm-sensors can only detect my GPU and that's it. I have to go to my motherboard BIOS if I want to check how my CPU's doing, which is completely pointless.
>>
>>60490557
Had it existed when I got this, there's a good chance I would have.

>>60501435
Indeed. I get by with an old core2duo + phc-intel. and limiting the clock speeds. I can run at 80% of max clock speed (2.13 GHz / 2.66) with only a .025 volt increase over the minimum (0.9v / 0.875) and it uses so little power that I have the fan locked at its lowest speed and the CPU can't get over 60°C at full load. I can even run passive cooling with no fan at all at 1.6 GHz / min voltage.

But the performance would be SO much better on modern hardware (ignoring the IME bullshit).

I hear, however, that AMD may be releasing a new mobile chip, with no PSP. If there's some way to tweak the power usage, maybe I'll finally be willing to upgrade after 8 years...

Yeah, how many years ago? I can buy another one now, for just $1,900.

I'd love to do a new build, but I'm hella poorfag right now. Hell, this system isn't even really mine. It's on loan from a friend.

The only thing I have towards a new build thus far is a case, and that was only because I wanted to transfer this thing's guts into it to make it easier to maintain, and hopefully cut its temps down a bit; which didn't pan out because it turns out Alienwares are definitely not built to fit in anything but their own cases.

If poorfag, Xeon 6 cores are literally $20-$50 on eBay.
Very nice uplift in performance from a (usually) drop-in upgrade
