Does /g/ back-up its files?
>>
Of course but I know many people who don't

For example many just delete photos from their phones for storage, so thousands of photos, many of them personal, just disappear
>>
>>60471868
Holy shit, that's awful.

I've heard a few stories in the past year of people's harddrives going and them losing work. Even developers who should be pushing things every day.
>>
>>60471818
yes, I have duplicates of my important files on another partition.

question

qnap ts-431X or synology ds416? For backups and data streaming.

I'm leaning towards the qnap because it has a single a single 12cm fan and optional 10gbe (which is stupid expensive, but better to have an option for the future).
>>
I want a NAS I can stream from. I also want a NAS that I can store 1080p/4k porn on.

Having the one device do both feels like a recipe for disaster.
>>
>>60472015
you can get a single port 10gbe nic for like $50 on ebay, and a 2-3m sfp cable for about the same
I use my 8 bay synology as a fast direct attached storage that way
>>
>>60472224
>and a 2-3m sfp cable for about the same

I need 10m minimum because the nas would sit in another room, and the cable would go through 2-3 walls so I need to crimp it myself.

Depends on what.

I upload stuff to dropbox and onedrive. If it's something I don't want other people to have access to, then I encrypt it. Pictures and shit like that I just upload to google photos due to infinite storage plus I don't really give a fuck if google has access to my non-sensitive photos.

Movies and TV-shows rest on my NAS, don't really give a fuck if that goes to hell since I can easily replace them.

Only media that's hard to get and I really care about, personal stuff, and important data.

No point in backup up the TBs of anime, games, andTV shows, there's always new stuff coming out even if I can't redownload the old ones anymore. I just trust those to redundancy.
>>
>>60471818
Yes. I have a 4TB raid'd pool on my server that I use for general storage and I keep a 4TB disk in a dock on my desk that I make frequent backups of it with.
>>
Iv had a 2tb external drive sitting around for so many years and iv probably put less than a 50gb of data on it.

What do you guys have that needs to be BACKED UP. I write a ton of code for work and personal projects but thats all obviously on github.

I wipe my computer for fun and reinstall everything a few times a year. Old data is gross.
>>
>>60475237
Anyone? Guess it might depend on the brand though.
>>
>>60476029
>needs to be backed up

Well personally it's not about a need but a want, storage is cheap so why not? I don't save literally everything but any media and personal photos/documents/games I try to keep safe for years to come that I can look back on.
>>
>>60476029
because some of us actually run up-time intensive services. Ever use a computer to actually host something?
>>
>>60476063
iv heard this argument a few times and i guess thats okay. but im a cheap ass so if it isnt "free" it isnt cheap for me.
>>
>>60476068
haha babbies first minecraft server
>>
>>60476029
>>60476063
>>60476075

To add, torrent sites are going down left and right nowadays so I try to keep anything saved so I can get it later or share it to people who want it. You never know when the time will come around that the file isn't available anymore, just look at what happened with what.cd, tons of rare audio that was lost. It's their own fault for keeping it private, but still. I'm sure there are plenty of people who kept the shit they got from there backed up and archived, but we will never know.
>>
>>60476084
was thinking more along the lines of a centralized git or HTTP server but ok.
>>
>>60476090

>>
>>60475237
>>60476053
>are safe generally magnetic
No.
>hard drive storage
Hard drives don't retain data very well. You either want tape or copies of data on arrays at different locations.
>>
All backed up to my server if it's important. Also have a 500GB external I made out of the drive that came with my T420. Keep copies of my encrypted file containers on there.
>>
>>60476108
I totally understand where you're coming from though with the price. It isn't cheap for a lot of people, drives of quite a large size, especially in RAID, cost a pretty penny. But I already run a lot of services for my home use so some extra storage is always nice.
>>
>>60476103
yeah.... if youre important enough to run a centralised git or HTTP server you arnt going to be a NEET on /g/. Those applications have a very obvious, undebatable, need to back stuff up.

we're talking about your average joe after he comes home from work writing 2 year old documents to 4 separate drives.

>>
>>60471818
What is in OPs pic?
Is it some kind of USB 3.0/3.1 external multi HDD/SSD case?
>>
is it bad that my backup is literally mirror disks that copy on a set schedule, not even RAID?

I just want to protect against hardware failure, I know what I'm deleting and what I'm not, it's mostly media.

I'm scared of RAID because of it getting fucked and corrupted and not being re-buildable. also the cards are expensive. I know RAID saves space but I like the idea of being able to just take an HD out and know what movies are on it and being able to read it on anything.
>>
>>60476029
hoarding for the apocalypse/blackouts and the risk that something rare I have could disappear from general availability. also not having to wait for downloads, having a lot of media for like home theater purposes is nice because it's instant. also travel, if you wanna load up something on your mobile device it's much faster to get it locally.

I would hate to have something happen and loose all my files, and not being able to remember some file I had forgotten about. with a backup I can "look back" and say "oh shit I forgot I had that movie it was amazing" or something.
>>
I should, but I don't really want to buy the 6TB and additional enclosure it would require to back it up. Was considering pushing it into glacier but now that Comcast has fucked everyone with data caps that option is gone.

How are 2.5" external hard drives compared to 3.5"?

WD Green is a very good budget HDD as long as you disable head parking. It's that forced head parking that destroys the drives early, especially since the keep putting them in portable cases, which puts more stress on the heads than if they are not moving.

If you disable head parking and use them as desktop drives as intended, they can last very long.
