To be fair, they are being jews and refusing to expand their network outside of highly populated suburbs and urban areas for the most part.

Though being one of the people getting 1gbps for under $100 a month i really can't complain too much.

And apparently FiOS are working on deploying NG-PON2 by the early/mid 2020s. Which would be 40gbps download and 10gbps per 4 or 8 houses which would allow 5-10gbps symmetric residential connections by the mid 2020s.

DOCSIS is disgusting specifically because of the lack of upload bandwidth.

Hell it's why Comcast is creating their own Fiber network to compete with Verizon, AT&T, and others.

Comcast now has 2gpbs download and upload fiber internet (as opposed to their normal Cable DOCSIS internet).

For once I realize Verizon isn't even that bad. Too bad in my area Verizon sold off FiOS to Frontier over a year ago and now the best I can get is 150/150 for $75
>>
>>60457983
Because for existing customers gigabit service is $124.99 a month, after taxes right around $130.

With TV and phone, it lowers it to $94.99 with taxes and fees comes to right around $105. $25 cheaper a month than just 1gbps service would be. The discounts last the entire length of my contract.
>>
>>60457990
Yup, when i heard they were selling some off to Frontier I was elated to hear they weren't selling off in my area.

Verizon has been solid for the 11-12 years i've been a customer.
>>
>>60457794
What's going on?
>>
Also for anyone curious, you can use your own router. There are several people on various tech forums running this service on beefy Pfsense or UTM9 boxes.
>>60458033
Discounts
One $5 discount expires at the end of 1 year, another $5 discount expires the next year, and that's when my contract is up. I then have several other discounts that expire after the next year, by which point i'll have renegotiated for a better price, or done something else with my internet.

Why is this fucking allowed?

On another note, 100mbps is $55/month where I live.
>>
>>60458185
>Why is this fucking allowed?
Because you're a moron.

FiOS actually provisions each customer with 1024/1024mbps at the GPON node.

HOWEVER, TCP/IP packet overhead is guess what? ~5.5%

your NIC is rated for 1000mbps, 5.5% of 1000? 65.

1000-65= 945.

Meaning at FULL speed, the most you can expect a 1gbps NIC to provide is 945mbps. The only way to get around this is to change frame sizes to use Jumbo frames, but no ISPs support jumbo frames, so in essence, you're limited to 945mbps to your ISP by the 1gbps and TCP/IP specification

Educate yourself next time so you don't make a fool of yourself again.
>>
>>60458237
No you piece of shit. One gigabit service is one gigabit service. I don't care why they can or can't do a full 1gbps, if they can't do it they shouldn't advertise it.

So then literally no gigabit internet service providers exist in the WORLD unless they provide above 1gbps.

Because NO ISP can change how the 802.3 specification works for 1gbps NICs.

Sorry, but just like how your USB 3.0 port is rated for 5gbps, you'll never actually see a device hit 5gbps while using it.
>>
>>60458185
The actual fine print is 750-940mbps download and 740-880mbps upload depending on local congestion.

I personally have never seen below ~850mbps though. it's pretty much always full speeds.

I've got it in the metro atlanta area. Speed is as advertised for the most part, it saturates my connection with steam at least, and I usually download at 200+ Mbps from MEGA.

>Comcast.

Yeah but the problem is you'll have Comcast. So if your internet ever goes out, they'll charge you because they got upset over something.

To be honest, I'd rather have no internet than have Comcast again.
>>
>>60462269
Depends what you currently have for your installation.

These days they REQUIRE an ethernet install (not coax) for anything over 100mbps. So if you're on an old Coax install, you'll have to have a tech come out and run ethernet from the ONT to your router.

if you're still on an old BPON ONT then they'll further have to replace it with a GPON ONT.

Order online to avoid $90 in installation fees and get an extra $10 off your bill.
>>
>>60462073
>Sheffield

I'm so sorry
>>
>>60462294
This is true, and one of the major reasons I don't want to switch to them, and probably wont. BUT the offer is pretty enticing.

It's full 2gbps service, they just leave you an SFP+ lead from their network, you can plug it into whatever you want. On their end, the 2gbps connection links DIRECTLY into an MX2020 backbone server and avoids their usual edge routers most of their customers hit first.

They charge $500-1000 for installation fees, but they're willing to foot up to $15,000 in total installation costs.

They lock you in at $149.99 for 2 years, then it goes up to $170 a month.

They also give you a static IP address for this level of service, and no data caps.

So it's about as good as it gets for a residential service, period.
>>
>>60457900

yuropoor education everybody
>>
>>60462303
They probably need to install it then, I got one of those moca coax boxes.
>>
>>60462377
Yeah, and since you're on the old 85/85mbps i'd ASSUME you're also on a BPON ONT and they'll have to replace it with a GPON ONT. The BPON ONTs only had 10/100mbps ethernet ports and MoCA 1.1 Coax (max of 175mbps).

GPON ONT has MoCA 2.0 (max of around 500mbps in best case), and 10/100/1000 ethernet.

They've gone away from coax installs entirely the last few years, so they'll want to drill a hole somewhere to run an ethernet cable to wherever you keep your router.

If you want them to use something besides CAT5e. Supply your own cable, CAT6a is good for up to 10gbps over 100m if you want to future proof your network.

They're starting to offer 1gbps in a (tiny portion) of town... For $90 fucking dollars a month.

My ping on euro servers is awful. Minimum 140ms for anything in the UK. 160ms for French/German. Just gets worse from there.
>>
>>60462447
I think I might put my router by the ONT, it's right in the middle of my house so it will get good wifi coverage for all the rooms from there, and then run a single cat6 wire to each of the rooms I want Ethernet in and use gigabit switches from there.
>>
>>60462521
Sounds reasonable to me, have the tech do a wired speedtest before he leaves to make sure you're getting at least 850mbps+

Some people upgrade and then get stuck at ~300-500mbps and they have to call a tech to come out again and reset shit.
>>
>>60462475
>My ping on euro servers is awful. Minimum 140ms for anything in the UK. 160ms for French/German. Just gets worse from there.

I mean that's not great ping, but it's not too shit considering you're getting 40ms+ to a server nearby.

As for the NSA shit, I hope you realize literally any ISP you connect to in the US is being spied on, just because you go with a smaller ISP doesn't mean anything. NSA has nodes on every US ISP to monitor whatever they need to.

I also honestly feel that way. 100/100mbit is enough. That $70/month option is cheaper, though. Here it's $40/month for 100/100mibt and about $120 for gigabit/gigabit.

Another big reason I don't bother with gigabit is that here in Swedistan I rarely get 100mbit down. If I use local sites or download some GNU/Linux distribution with a few peers in Sweden, Russia, Norway or Finland then I'll get 100mbit down. I mostly don't get that speed which indicates that I'd rarely get gigabit even if I have that between my home and my ISP.

Not really as big a deal in the US actually, since most services are being hosted on servers close by (at least for me on the East coast US), almost everything i connect to gets decent speeds, at least 400-500mbps. And many things get 800mbps+
>>
>>60463443
>and I use my own modem/router
Comcast actually wants you to use your own router with their 2gbps service since pretty much EVERY consumer router out right now only has 1gbps NICs.

They give you an SFP+ lead if you have a 10gbps NIC with SFP+ connectors, you can hook it right up, whether it's a Merkai, or a custom box running Pfsense or UTM9, it's got a static IP and full 2.2gbps bandwidth allocated from the node for both download and upload.

If you don't have network equipment capable of an SFP+ connection they'll hook it up to a switch that will give you 1gbps ethernet connection instead, but then you're obviously capped at 1gbps.
>>
>tfw computer is too slow for 1 gbps

I doubt it.

1gbps is only 125MB/s

It's mostly a liberal issue as conservatives tend to want less government regulation. If net neutrality and lobbying weren't things (why do you think Trump made it so that ex-politicians can't lobby anymore?), every home in America would have had 10 gigabit symmetrical fiber years ago.
>>
>>60462294
>I'd rather have no internet than have Comcast again.

Seconding this. I had comcast during college. 2 year contract. At the 1 year mark they changed their terms of service and snuck a 4 year contract extension into it. Being a dumb college student I didn't read the fine print fully, at the end of my 2 year term I was graduating and was getting ready to cancel out my contract when I found out I had to buy out 4 years of service at 90%... 6 months of back and forth later I get it down to a pro-rated 5 months that I need to pay to cancel out the contract and they won't hatefuck my credit rating (have this on the record, signed by one of their reps at that point.. jokes on them I have no credit rating because I cash flow everything.)

Get the electronic paperwork, almost sign automatically, but decide to be thorough and read through the paperwork just to be sure.

Fuckers sent me a 4 year contract renewal.

The next person to contact them was a lawyer and it was settled that week with comcast paying back the 5 months previous bills (less 90% to the lawyer)

TL:DR fuck comcast... Also they pulled their cable services from the area my parents live with only a month's notice, rather than bother to upgrade the local hub and tried to bill people for two months after the services were cut (on christmas day of all the possible times to do it)
>>
I am very envious you even have this option. My fastest speed is a 10/10 4g connection that would cost $70 for 70GB a month. Instead im on a 500GB 5/0.5 plan that costs $90

Oh good, you're either hyperbolizing because you have no actual knowledge or experience regarding fiber deployment, or you do know better and just think it makes your argument look better.

Anyone who actually knows anything about this industry would laugh in your face.

Also how the FUCK do you think net neutrality makes internet slower...?

Also, look at the places in the country that have good fast internet, it's the cities and the east and west coast population centers, and they're all VERY liberal.

What other technology has been standing still since 2007? Are you still using 2007 tier CPU? Or GPU? Or storage? Or RAM? No, you're not, these things have IMPROVED.

Why the fsck are we not doing 100 Gigabit over cat6 yet? I know that's a bit much to ask but 10 gigabyte over cat6 should have been commonplace years ago.

depends where you live, but around here it's like $8 more or something.

and if you rent their router it's $10 a month more, or $150 upfront cost (or like $80-120 on amazon/ebay). But you can use your own router as long as you don't need STB guide info and VOD services. So if you JUST want internet you can use whatever router you want, the ONT provides a CAT5e 1gbps ethernet connection to your house and you're free to do whatever you want with it.

I have triple play with them so i have TV + Phone + 1gbps and this month my bill is like $98.

Despite the fact I only use the phone and internet it's cheaper to get all 3 services. I pay $123 a month and that covers 50|50 internet (I actually get 60|60 though), a landline phone, and local TV channels. I have 0 cables boxes (they charge $10 each for HD boxes, you can watch HD streams for free though through your computers using their web site), and I rent their router.

I'm calling them tomorrow though to see if I can lower it more somehow, the TV fees are bullshit for something I literally never use. Pic related is my internet upgrade pricing paths.

No 1gbps service currently available in the US from a major ISP comes with a data cap.

Further, Verizon FiOS doesn't have data caps at all on any of their internet packages. They technically have a 10TB monthly soft cap, but you're allowed to break the cap a few times, if you continuously use over 10TB a month they upgrade you to a business account. (with the associated costs)

that's reasonable. It seems that the less young gigabit market is less bogged down with scam like business tactics.

Verizon seems like a respectable ISP from what I've seen. I bet they don't even force equipment on you.

Paying 60USD for a 120/30 line near a major US city. On the last uncapped residential ISP in my area. Ridiculous. No fiber options.
>>
>>60469254
>I bet they don't even force equipment on you.
They have a provided router that is needed for their set top boxes to get Video on demand and guide information. However I believe it's only needed for the initial setup and at that point you can use Ethernet to MoCA adapters to provide Coax for Set top boxes and they'll still get VOD and Guide info.

Not a concern for those of us not using TV though, further Verizon is in the final stages of beta testing their IPTV service which will see them move from Coax to Ethernet set top boxes, and at that point you will be able to use any router you'd like.

They wont troubleshoot anything past your ONT though if you use your own router, which is reasonable.

I want to share some general tips on how to get the most out of your ISP service based on experience, If you have something to add, just reply:

-always call to start new plans. Nagging on a sales rep might get you the best package.
-consider the price differences between bundling and standalone services
-see if the ISP offers a way for you to provide your own compatible modem, router, APs etc to save on equipment fees (these are a large ripoff)
-make sure you're not getting screwed with a cap on your data usage
-shop around: gigabit providers can be surprisingly affordable in the right areas. Small ISPs can also be saviors sometimes since they often provide competitive speed and pricing.

Most hard drives can handle 1gbps (its only 125MB/s afterall)

As for wifi, even if your router supports 1gbps+ wifi speeds, your client devices probably dont.

Most devices cap around 200-300mbps, newer higher end devices and better laptops will top out around 850mbps.

Some laptops have 1gbps+ cards, but you wont see those speeds without being within ~5-10 feet and no walls from your router.

The criminal enterprise Radiotjänst who are tasked with extorting TV license fees in Sweden just declared that all computer and all cellphones are subject to a TV license some years ago. They then proceeded to demand that stores who sell laptops and mobile phones report everyone who buys those things. A few stores went along with this.

A few people bothered to actually check the law describing the basis of the TV license and found that no, there's nothing in the text of the law that specifies or justifies that anything but a television box is subject to a TV-license. They took the radiotjänst to court and radiotjänst lost there because courts, unlike most of the Swedish governments institutions, sometimes care what the text of a law actually says.

This means that there is no tv-license style internet license in Sweden, never was. Obviously the states propaganda arm Sveriges Television wants to be able to extort more people but I'm not sure they will be able to do this since most young people don't have a television and don't want or watch their propaganda.

This kind of thing is very common in Sweden (and probably quite a few other countries), btw, various government institutions tend to just declare some kind of tax or fee and start demanding it even if it's illegal and/or isn't based on any law.

Two problems with their test, the test sizes are too small for this type of connection, and their server is shit, or it's on someplace not anywhere close by to me, because I get 250-300mbps download and 20mbps upload.

I can easily upload torrents at 400mbps+ though, so something tells me it's their server being shit.
>>
>>60471031
try the multithreaded test then, http://testmy.net/multithread
>>
>>60471079
Same results and it's only for download, doesn't do upload at all.

More than likely it's your ISP peering or some local backbone congestion issue.

I very regularly see 800mbps+ on my downloads from steam if given enough time to ramp up to speed.

I also get 5ms ping in CSGO official servers on the east coast.

You're right; fuck it. T-Mobile style, "uncarrier" re branding is incoming.

>100% US-based customer service and technical support
>new pricing structure, taxes and fees included
>existing customer get double speeds, no extra cost, customer doesn't have to do anything
>paying early termination fees(up to a certain, at this point undetermined amount) for customers to switch from other providers
>landline phone service included at no extra cost with any internet plan
>gigabit services will begin rolling out at prices varying by region, but will be no more than $100, and again this includes taxes and fees
>Very aggressive fiber expansion(gigabit in all new ares)
>more shit to be determined

We're looking at this shit getting rolling in about 10-16 months

glad i could help, gigabit should be the new standard for american ISPs.
>>60471355
overtime AT&T may optimize traffic and assure peering links have adequate bandwidth. But it could be awhile, especially if they have no incentive to be competitive.

In my area Comcast and Verizon have been fighting each other for a decade now, and verizon with it's aggressive fiber upgrades over the years has forced comcast to start deploying their own fiber optic service as well as keeping DOCSIS speeds high and cheap (compared to elsewhere in the country). Comcast still doesn't have their 1TB a month data cap in this area because Verizon doesn't have a data cap either.

>>
>>60471491
Nope you have to rent, they're moving to new IPTV service expected this summer or fall for some markets, so Coax STBs will be going away as it is.

They do allow you to bring your own cable card I believe if you wanted to go that route and use an HTPC.
>>
>>60471345
I'm in finance and desu i don't even know what that means. We're pretty much copying Google's Fiber implementation, if that's helpful.
>>
>>60471491
>>60471533
You can just not online, I did this over the phone. They'll send you a box with a return label for you to ship your cable boxes back in. I don't remember how I got that conversation though, I think I told them I just don't use the cable service and would like to return the boxes to avoid the fee, say you watch TV using their app.
>>
>>60471615
Fair enough, I know enough on the technical side to make an educated guess, they'll be doing what Verizon FiOS has been doing for the past ~6-8 months in the North east. And is a fairly simple upgrade from your current network topology perspective.
Unless you've still got customers on BPON ONTs, in which case they'll need GPON ONTs. But besides Ethernet install instead of Coax, that's the only thing a customer should have to deal with.
>>
>>60471437
To you and other anons with Fios gigabit, what's the router situation like? Do they go fiber -> ONT -> coax -> router
I have an ONT in my basement and it connects to the router on the 2nd floor via coax, is it going to stay that way or are they going to have to rip my shit up?
>>
>>60471676
Fiber > ONT > Ethernet > Router

They don't do coax installs anymore actually, or at least they try not to.

The G1100 (the router they use) only has MoCA 2.0 and it's no bonded so it maxes at ~400mbps. and bonded MoCA 2.0 adapters max out at around 750mbps.

Sadly MoCA 2.5 adapters don't exist yet, if they did you could potentially set up a MoCA bridge at the Ethernet at the ONT to Coax, and then another MoCA 2.5 adapter to change that coax back to ethernet for your router upstairs.

Frontier bought the parts of FiOS Verizon didn't want anymore, Verizon kept the larger and more concentrated East coast network which was more profitable to operate, and easier to upgrade because of the density.

Frontier still uses the FiOS branding in the old markets.

Both companies still exist and are separate companies. Verizon still wholly owns Verizon FiOS and Verizon Wireless.

Doesn't work in my browser, had to switch browser for the button to show up.

Also, the test is broken as fuck for upload because the test file is wayyyyy to small for 1gbps upload speeds. It finishes the upload portion in the blink of an eye, it should be at least 250MB in size for a 1gbps connection. Pretty sure it's closer to 32-64MB.
>>
>>60481811

Their pay server is definitely down. The button showed up for me in the latest of Firefox and Chromium.

I think there is something else wrong with their upload as I have 1000/100 and its gives me around 70 Mbps on average.

Considering testmy.net however, that site is way off, as my download is NEVER accurate or even close.

I can't get the test to complete in Chromium, it starts then crashes "Aww snap..."

I find speedtest.net to give me wildly variable results as well. I am pretty sure most of these sites have 1 Gbps connections - and when testing with a 1Gbps is maxing the server out - and usually no server is performing at 100%, except a 3 am, on Sunday, when no ones using them.

Where as for me I can connect to 3-4 local speedtest servers and get 850mbps + on both upload and download at any time of the day.

DSLreports is also fairly accurate for me, only real problem is the download almost never breaks 900mbps.

Speedtest.net is odd for me. I can select 4 different servers in Atlanta for instance and get anywhere from 500 Mbps to 800+ mbps.
