SuSE 9.2 (late 2004-early 2005).
Friend told me about it and gave me an install CD.

I've tried dozens of distros since then and lately settled on Xubuntu last year after spending a couple years annoyed with Manjaro but too lazy to switch.

It was an old pentium m thinkpad T43p so the distro had to be fairly lightweight. Worked perfectly but I've since moved on to Debian and eventually the GPU cooked itself from running at 95c for even basic tasks like watching youtube at 720p

Xubuntu. I tried several and It's the first one that I tried that I really liked better than Windows.

After that I've used several extensively. It went something like.

Xubuntu
Backbox
Fedora
Ubuntu GNOME
Debian stretch
Antergos
Arch
Manjaro
Manjaro unstable

I've stuck with Manjaro unstable because it's repos are synced with Arch stable around 6 to 12 hours behind so I stay up to date and if there is an issue there will be plenty of talk about it on the Arch forums by the time I encounter it and if something ever happens that I can't resolve I can revert to the stable repos for a while and everything will be fine.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

It was either Fedora or Suse Linux around late 2003 or early 2004. When I graduated high school in 2003 I fell in with some tech nerds at the community college. This was also the time when I started driving on my own. There was a computer store in the same city. I went in there and asked them if I could use their internet connection to download a Linux iso. They said they couldn't really let me do that, but they offered to simply give me and older copy of Linux on disc. I was given a pressed copy of Suse Linux, and a burned copy of Fedora.

I got home and I don't really recall which I installed first. I believe it may have been Fedora. But I preferred Suse because it was slightly easier for me to use.

I knew little about computers at this time. I spent most of my time clicking in the dark and asking questions when I could from people at school who were mostly dismissive. I knew nothing of how to use the Linux CLI, and barely knew how to do anything with Windows.

I used Linux for a while as my daily OS because the copy of Windows 2003 server edition I had as my other operating system would always get the MS blaster virus and I didn't know how to deal with it. I didn't know how to do Windows updates.

I didn't much like the fonts in Linux, and I didn't know how to change them. But the Suse Linux disc included Mozilla (not Firefox, the original Mozilla) and that was really a revelation to me. And it didn't crash from viruses.

But I didn't know how to install programs so everything I ran had to be a binary. I did somehow get MUGEN to run, and maybe a few emulators.

Eventually someone gave me a copy of Windows XP that would pass WGA and I learned how to do updates, and I stopped using Linux for the most part. Except the occasional usage of Knoppix when I would get viruses again or just otherwise break Windows XP by tinkering with settings. And sometimes it had better support for random hardware. I also liked the built in CD-burning software.

This is the man who introduced me to Linux. He was running Gentoo on his Macbook in 2003. I thought that was very cool. I haven't talked to him in 13 years. Last I knew he was a developer for macOS.

LBA-Linux
Because it was a one-cd install and I had dialup.

Lol no shit? I just fucked him in a park bathroom last night a few miles outside of SF. His prolapse was his big ticket item, felt glorious drooping over my cock.

Slackware in the early 90's, because it was the easiest CD-ROM set to acquire.

Arch is great for learning server administration because you learn by doing mistakes, including huge security holes. If you just want to "use Linux", go for Fedora.

Fedora, because most computers at my college's computer lab use it. Then move to Ubuntu, and now settled on Arch. I fell for a lot of memes here.

Still use Gentoo.

All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

gOS oh dear lord. I remember when it began to die and people were trying to give it merit as a netbook OS. Thank God that project died a horrible death with peppermint.
