It used to be, but after some time a lot of the more interesting stuff had left I/O only to be announced outside of it.
People stupidly and surprisingly enough still think that I/O will have hardware announcements, that Android "Project letter here" will have its name revealed, That we will see some kind of wildly useful stuff that will make its way to the consumer market. All these things are no longer true.
It's just a developer conference, showing off some stuff that only the real turboneckbeards will enjoy and promising shit that will not end up being remotely the same/true as they hype it up to be and shit that will likely be neat concepts that will never exit Google labs.
This shit has been going downhill ever since Google restructured itself and now is under "Alphabet".
