"New Guy" edition because I just got my Moto G5 Plus today and I already have questions. Lo and behold there was no /spg/ for me to ask.

I want to hook up with Verizon. I need one of their SIM cards, right? Can I go to a Verizon store and get one?

Otherwise I am enjoying this thing so far on wi-fi. I have a feeling I'll be glued to it for a while.
>>
Yeah just go to a Verizon store and sign up for a new plan.

Which variant did you get? 2 or 4 GB RAM? How's the battery life so far?

I'm assuming it left China with 100% and it's at 60% right now.

Is there a way to use your tablet for your phone's calls and texts via bluetooth?

If my phone is locked to one carrier is there a way to unlock it myself or do i have to pay mr. chang to do it? I bought a g4 play a long ass time ago and just now i'm trying the dual sim feature, it doesn't recognize anything but at&t sim cards.

The phone is fully unlocked (root, bootloader) and it's running a nougat rom if that matters, and it does support dual sim, i doubt it'd be exclusive to stock anyway.

Not really a phone question, I guess, but an app question:

My gf want a cellphone. I have a Redmi Note 3 Pro and she likes it a lot. We cannot find it on Aliexpress. Is there any similar cellphone in terms of being a great phone but cheaper than a Samsung or a fucking Iphone? Maybe a Redmi Note 4? I don't know anything of the current Redmi Note 4. Anyone ITT have Verizon? I'm a burger currently on T-Mobile. I saw that Verizon has unlimited data again and was just wondering how the Verizon experience is. Worth switching? I own my phone, and owe nothing other than a monthly bill to T-Mobile. Is Verizon still number 1 when it comes to overall coverage in the US?

Moto X pure is $350 new now. Or Moto G4 for $180/$200. LG makes their Stylo 2 I've seen for $220 new. 720p screen but solid phone overall. Unless you're only talking chink brands, then I have no idea.

You pay the down payment, they send you a 750 dollar gift card to pay off the balance on the phone. So once the card arrives ill own the free s8 and paying 30 a month for the other. Think you gotta keep the other one on contract but not sure how they could enforce that.

They're ok. No better than the phone of you choosing with a good case. OtterBox, spiegen, and sup case make durable cases that'll take a beating. Unless you're after something like pic related. Rugged phone from CAT win integrated FLIR camera.
>>
>>60458353
As an LG V10 owner, the V20 fixed all of the minor flaws the 10 had. They upped the battery size from 3k mah to 3300mah. Overall I usually get something like 7 hours SOT use with 90% screen brightness. If I'm not using it for videos and am mainly just browsing text based sites, the phone will last the entire day.

They also made the second screen brighter than the V10.

What does being a college student mean to battery life? Are you going to be using the phone for note taking? Are you a heavy or light user? Do you stream a lot of your stuff or listen to local media? All comes down to use case. If you're playing Vidya all day, expect 2 hours at 90% brightness.
>>60458438
Me too. It's actually not terribly priced considering what if offers. It sacrifices on screen resolution for the sake of battery life. Cat says 30 hours of active use.

Yeah it doesn't make sense how the P2 is cheaper than the Z Play and around the same price as the Moto G5+ and yet in many ways it has better specs than either of them. I'm guessing the Motorola phones are priced higher because they have more "brand value" ie. people are willing to pay more for a Motorola than a Lenovo even if the specs are the same / worse

Best daily driver ROM for Lenovo Zuk Z2 for a normie apple user?

Just ordered one for someone as a gift since xiaomi doesn't have any 5.0in phone with band 4 LTE, they prefer Apple devices but hate iphone battery life and cost.

From the bit of reading I did, Indian official ZUI ROM seems to be the closest thing to a global ROM with OTA update. Is ZUI shit or is it at least as good as MIUI?
>>
Bought my first smartphone in 2014, it was 1st gen moto g. I'm very happy with it because it held up for three years considering i dropped it at least once a month.
It's still holding up but there are slowdowns when i open more than 10 tabs in chrome, takes a while to properly attach the usb charger because it keeps falling out, and the microphone i'm told is not clear when i'm talking.

What i would want now is equivalent of a moto g 1st gen in 2013 - 2014.
>needs to be around 5" (4.6" - 5", 5.2" would be pushing it)
>needs to not lag too much at 15 opened chrome tabs
>needs to have 4g
>needs 720p-FHD screen

What should i get? I don't want a big phone nor an expensive one and moto g 5 looks like a an alien sex toy. Something simple, industrial, practical and keeping up with my browsing.

Camera is definitely not on par with flagship devices. That said, the camera almost seems like a sidenote on this device. Low light photos are noisy, very dark and lack detail in comparison to the iPhone 7 or even the Mi5. The low light enhancement feature doesn't do much to improve this either. Focusing seems like a hit or miss especially on closer objects and accurate colour reproduction is severely lacking. These do seem to be common problems in Xiaomi phones barring the Mi flagship line which tends to perform slightly better in the camera department. If you are willing to look past the lackluster camera, the Mix is otherwise a fantastic phablet.

I asked in the last thread but - does anyone have a blackberry priv? Any thoughts?

I've read a decent amount on it and know about the SoC issues it has (overheating, etc) but am having a hard time finding anything better,

The Axon 7 seems like a pretty clear choice, but after tax on Amazon it is ~$400, which is a little more than I want to spend at this point in time.

Ideally I'd want to use this phone for 2 years minimum, three to four years would be great.

Lol, I have a shitty Lenovo A328. I was satisfied with it for the first year, now it's the second year and the battery went to shit. Standard two or four hours on battery, even after a factory wipe and all. Of course, I have also gotten a spare battery, but that doesn't seem to help.
Is the hardware just fucked now? If yes, what replacement should I seek?

If you have anything more than superficial scratches on your glass, it can create a failure point for a crack, even when you have a case. I'm not sure about microfractures, but if you drop your phone enough times, it'll eventually break.

What's the chance of Xiaomi releasing an upgraded version of the Mi6 with water resistance or something soon?

I like the phone very much except for the lack of the 3.5mm jack and WR - it's either the Mi6 or SE (2017).

How often do people actually destroy their phones with water? I mean I suppose it's nice to have but I can't think of a single time I've had problems with water with a phone. Well I did have this old Lumia that was hard to use when it was raining because the raindrops messed with the touchscreen touch detection but it was still totally okay interior wise. People are much more likely to wreck their phone by dropping it, but they're still really fragile

So in two months I'll have had my Nexus 5x for a year. I'm a little afraid that it'll hit its expiration date soon and that any repair attempts will fail. Just in case, what phone would you guys recommend?

Must haves:
Bootloader unlockable out of the box with good TWRP and custom ROM support
Fingerprint sensor (back mounted preferable but front is nbd)
USB-C fast charging
US GSM LTE bands (CDMA would be nice too but is optional)
At least 32GB storage

Strongly preferred:
Screen size in 5"-5.5" range
NFC
Flat screen surface

Meh, but not a deal breaker:
Chinkphone
No front facing speaker
No SD card
No aux port

Don't care:
Gaming performance
Wireless charging
Camera as long as it's not mediocre

Budget ~$350 but could go a little bit higher if there's a nice sale.

The ZTE Axon 7 looks really good. How is the mini version compared to it?

You sure are easy to convince. One opinionated fag comes along and that is enough for you to seal the deal? I've had a Priv for about a year and a half now and it is far from "garbage". But it does have its limitations, as well as advantages.

The SOC does not overheat monstrously but it does get quite warm in situations where my girlfriend's iPhone 6s stays very cool. It is probably not going to get Nougat, but it will get security updates on a monthly basis for the foreseeable future. The screen is excellent, as is the keyboard, and having expandable storage is nice. Battery life is adequate, beats the iPhone 6s and Galaxy S6 easily. Camera is fine. Stock Android is great, but for some reason this phone begins lagging at random times and only a restart will fix it.

Overal not worth the price IMO, and probably not the phone you want to carry you for another two years since the OS has hit a dead end (but who knows how long the Axon will be supported), but still perfectly capable. I know it won't affect your decision, and the Axon is a good phone, but I still feel I should put this out there for anyone else debating it.
>>
>>60471647
Axon 7 is probably a good choice. It's on par with Oneplus 3, they both have their advantages. OP charges really fast and it has good custom ROM support, don't know how the Axon is with ROMs. OP3 probably goes for around the same price now since the 3T basically replaced it. In your case the Axon 7 wins with the rear fingerprint reader though
>>
>>60471643
Fucking needless complication. This kind of shit is what convinced me to get an HTC 10 instead of an iPhone 7 when it came time to replace my aging iPhone 4s. I really wish everyone else would stop imitating it just because Apple does it.

Is there even a rational reason for excluding the headphone jack and forcing you to buy a separate adapter? "Muh thin" does not count.
>>
>>60471841

>>
>>60471841
the have telemetry that shows not enough people used it, just because you've seen a bunch doesn't make it so, you only notice the headphone jack when it's being used, they decided not enough people gave a shit in comparison to how much publicity removing it would get.
>>
The only valable argue about the Le Max 2 is the sensor print, no jack and dead company is meme
>>
>>60471841
The jack is overrated, as someone who has an android I could get by just by sticking an adapter on the end of my current ones. Everything will be USB C soon anyway.
>>
>>60471789

>>
>>60471781
No, I posted in an earlier thread, I've done lots of research. I was attracted to the priv mainly because of the physical keyboard, but I can't afford to have an end-of-life phone for another two years when I can get one with a longer lifespan for not much more.

>>

The catch is no warranty and sometimes they come with vendor rom that needs to be flashed with stock unless you buy it from a store that doesn't fuck with them.

Band support is another thing because China uses different bands, few of them support LTE.

Ok, so I want to buy a Redmi Note 4 global 4gb/64gb

I'm currently choosing between this 4 sellers:

Xiaomi Online Store
Xiaomi Mi Store
Eternal Team
Goldway

I'm going to pay extra to get it shipped via DHL.

I would like to know which of those sellers offer the quickest shipping (sending the package to DHL)

I ask this because I have a friend that bought the same phone from Xiaomi Online Store a week ago and the seller hasn't shipped the phone yet, he even payed extra to get it shipped via DHL, but It's kind of unfair that he payed to get a quicker shipping but the seller doesn't even bothers to send the phone quick, or at least offer some kind of explanation of the shipping delay

so, TL;DR
Which seller has a faster shipping?
Xiaomi Online Store
Xiaomi Mi Store
Eternal Team
Goldway

???

It has less storage than you're looking for, but everything else should be good.

Sadly there are no medium or top tier phones with removable battery. Unless you want to buy the V10/20

My Nexus 5X hit the bootloop of death early this morning.
Now that Nexus is kill was is the best mid range close to stock Android phone out now.

I am going to try a repair of the 5X after I buy a heat gun after work. Anyone here have and advice?

Is the lumia 735 a decent windows mobile experience? I wanna get one on the cheap just to get a feel for the state of w10 mobile

W10m is absolute trash. Slow and buggy as fuck. Even most stock apps have big issues and dont get me started on thirdparty apps like whatsapp.

If you want a somewhat still good experience get a wp8.1 device. But its kinda outdated and unsupported now.

Surround the components around the SoC with clear orange tape to insulate them and don't turn the air up too high or else you risk displacing smaller components.

Make sure to keep the PCB as still as possible because any components on the opposite side of the board could be knocked away.

>>60483092
Well I don't wanna just digest the memes, I wanna see for myself without getting the 950, so will this one negatively impact the existing experience?

Am using the leather case that comes in the box. I will be using it as a daily driver so I wouldn't be as eager as I am if I don't have a case on it. The brick is just too slippery in hand.
>>
>>60483864
good tips, thanks
why specifically clear orange tape? is that a brand or something?
>>
>>60483443
try another app, see if it does the same thing. If that's the case, it means your notification light might be faulty.
>>
>>60482689
if you got it from the google store then just bug them about it, they'll send you a refurb probably
>>
Is the pixel worth it still or should I wait for the pixel 2?
>>
>>60483982
Not sure if it's a specific brand, but basically it doesn't shrink into itself or melt when under a heat gun, and doesn't leave any residue. It's also really thin and transparent.

Anything that doesn't melt should work too. Aluminum foil can be a decent alternative.

Need to replace my HTC Mini 2, been looking at the Axon mini, any advice lads?
>>
>>60484394
Can't give you any good advice, but any particular reason why you're going for Minis?
>>
>>60484449
Price for a good part, I don't want to spend that much on something that'll last 3-4 years. I got a good deal on the mini 2, and I am a large fan of front facing speakers. Not all too many manufacturers use them. Being in the UK, phones are just generally a bit more than across the pond as well.
>>
>>60484333
I'll just use aluminum foil
thanks again

my 6P just crapped out on me they're all starting to get bootloop issues which is what happened to mine. it amazing when it works but the battery started to degrade quickly then the hardware issue happened. wouldnt reccommend. ive had it since feb last year and it broke on me last satuday

I used MIUI on my Mi Max from getting it in late august last year until I installed lineageos in februari. I haven't looked back honestly. Even single handed mode is available in Lineageos if you want it. Camera is just as good. Everything works as expected. No weird chinky stuff in your phone is much comfier IMO and you get dpi options built into the rom.

I assume the Mi Mix lineage rom is about as good (my mi max does profit from rmn3p development tho)

Does anyone know a simple, manual way to root an Android 4.1.2 device (Xperia Ion)?

I tried the "motochopper" exploit, but it's not working. I managed to get it to work using KingoRoot, but that thing is absolutely disgusting and installs a bunch of its own software.
>>
>>60485830
Towelroot
>>
Is there a good reason to get the Moto G5 Plus over the Lenovo P2? The G5+ costs slightly less but the design alone makes me lean towards the P2.
>>
>>60486145
Better camera
>>
>>60486180
If that's all then I'm probably just gonna get the P2.
It doesn't really look any worse than the camera in the Galaxy S4 Active I have now when comparing the two using GSM's camera comparison thingy, and I can live with the camera in that.

If I'm specifically buying a new Android-based phone on AT&T for camera quality, support, and output, is the S8 actually a worthwhile purchase? Is it my best option?
>>
>>60486707
>output
???
>>
>>60486763
Probably not the best word, but in regards to the range and formats of images/video I can reasonably get out of it. Quality slow-mo, reasonable control of shutter speed/ISO/white balance/exposure, etc.
>>
>>60476889
Does the US version of the phone have dual SIM? I'm interested in getting FreedomPop, but it seems like I don't have a second sim slot on mine.
>>
>>60483881
>so will this one negatively impact the existing experience?

Sort of, they dropped software support for the 735 so you'll be stuck on w10 anniversary, although with my 640 I can tell you that each update only makes things slightly differently shit.
>>
>>60475264
i'm not poor, fuck off
>>
>>60486707
Slo-mo is same as iPhone 7, 240fps iirc. It has a pro mode that lets you control the aperture, iso, etc. I only think it has digital zoom, though.
>>
>>60487434
Are there any AT&T phones that outperform it in those areas, though? Realistically, I'm looking for something that I can get good enough quality content out of on the go (paired with something like an Osmo Mobile) if I don't have access to an actual camera.

I will say that since I'm already on an S5, it's tempting to stick with Samsung in any case. I just hope the bloatware is dialed down a bit.
>>
>>60487492
I went up to the S8 from the S5, the camera is better than my previous favorite, the LG G4.
>>
>>60486382
Yes
>>
>>60487513
And are you happy with it overall, outside of the camera? Have you run into any problems?
>>
>>60487569
Best phone I've had. People complain about the fingerprint reader next to the camera, but I have not misspressed it once. The always on display is useful too, especially playing music in the car. The self facing camera could be a little less bloomy, but at least it's hi res and sharp. Haven't used gimmick shit like dual audio or Iris scanning yet.
>>
>>60487607
Thanks, I'll probably go ahead and pull the trigger then.

What are best aps for new Iphone/ipad?

What is best ios browser?

Can you filter ads/scripts on ios? If so which filter is best?
>>
>>60488120
Pre-installed apps sit in the System partition, while user-installed apps sit in the Data partition. Factory reset doesn't touch the system partition, so if you delete an app from there, it's gone for good and a factory reset won't help.

I once had to install Nova Launcher as a system app because I accidentally permanently deleted TouchWiz from my S4 Active.

is the call/mic quality on the 3T as shit as the reviews say it is, they say call quality is terrible and the sound is very low on apps like whatsapp and skype

Yeah if you have the full firmware a flash should fix it, but just in case, make backups with Titanium Backup. It has the ability to install apps in the system partition if you're rooted.

Some flashable tars are just updates that only overwrite a part of the firmware, like updating your computer's BIOS. Full firmwares are usually larger, but that depends over the phone. Newer, more feature packed phones can have a ROM of a couple GB, while older phones are smaller.

Could just give it a try. There wouldn't be any harm as long as it's for the correct phone.

Looking to pick up a Samsung Note 4. What is the best place online to buy one that will last?

Just bought one listed as new from a reputable seller on eBay (almost 50K reviews, >99% positive) and it arrived with garbage packaging inside the box and was def not new (missing paint chips and broken volume rocker). Don't want to get burned again.
