When it's the technical name of the machine (like the one that appears on the terminal) i just put my last name on capitals and a short of the model of the machine.

If i'm naming the machine itself (wich i rarely do) i just give it a woman name, like a boat

I use the stem "durr-" and then a one-word description of the device.

My desktop is called "durr". My Carbon X1, "durr-skinny." My x120e, "durr-mini". My media server, "durr-media." and so on and so on.

I name them after their function and size.
ie. desktop is fortress, laptop is haven, phone was shuttle, now it is ship, pendrives are codex , vault, etc.

I came up with something cool. Some of you fags might not like it but i don't care.

I take the MAC address of the interface that i would likely use the most, convert each octet to decimal and add all the octets up.

Next, i do the number i got modulo 151. The number I end up with is associated with a gen 1 pokemon. That pokemon is the hostname of that device.
