It was pretty standard once they became affordable.
Makes it much easier and faster to copy disks, since you don't have to switch them several times.
Also you can keep the OS disk in and just switch program disks.

>the OS disk
???

Many computers back then had no hard disk, only what was in ROM, RAM and media
I know for a fact that Macs were rotten for this, a lot of Mac 128k and Plus software came with an extra copy of Mac OS jammed on the diskette just so you could keep using it

don't forget the tape drive and two carts
remember this machine has no internal permanent storage
I wonder what would have happened if bitcoin had been a thing during the early days of the internet.

I used to have a Commodore 64 but I never used that GEOS shit, I thought it was just a gimmick. Why not just load the program/game you want to run directly? It's not like there was multitasking or anything, right?

this. for example. the Macintosh Classic will not boot with an OS disk in it

17 million people owned a Commodore 64. It's safe to assume that even in the '80s a significant portion of them had to be illiterate enough to experience discomfort with the command line

Nice rig. Does it play Gunship?

How would they have loaded the GUI then? By typing load "*",8,1 -- literally how they would have loaded any other program.
Plus the average person back then knew their computer much better than the average person today. Partly because the machines were simpler but also because the manuals were much more complete, they taught you how to program in BASIC and often even showed you all the components on the circuit board.
>>60450417
have you tried booting a modern PC without an OS disk?
>>60449571
>it helpfully asks you to insert additional disks to be encrypted
>also asks you to flip them over
