How is the comparison between GIMP and Photoshop really?
If I'm wanting to work on editing photos and sometimes even animations, can GIMP satisfy making that process relatively simple or am I better off just shelling out for PS and After Effects or something?
Photoshop is much better, but just pirate it.
>>60432528
That's what I heard but I also heard Adobe was cracking down on piracy of their products a lot harder lately, is that true?
>>60432503
>work
GIMP will suffice for making a meme or two. It'll allow you to edit a gif, or to alter a palette. But if you want to "work" - subscribe for Photoshop.
If you want to draw something as a hobby - pirate Photoshop.
You probably can draw/animate decently in GIMP if you're willing to spend a shitload of time learning and scripting for it, but so you can in Paint + Movie Maker. Photoshop is just a much better, faster, intuitive and powerful tool in comparison. It's hella expensive though.
>>60432503
Photoshop CS2 is free, so you can use that if you're worried.
ITT: conjecture
GIMP is an extremely powerful raster editor and should be capable of doing anything you require, but the thing is designed by morons. this becomes quickly apparent with the its steep learning curve, nonsensical UI distribution and terrible defaults.
Photoshop is a more developed and polished tool with features and an overall UX that are more conducive to professional work. it's also a bloated mess that runs like ass and Adobe is a company staffed by incompetent fucktards who should not be trusted with your credit card information.
in both cases it's a major tradeoff. if you want a jerb in the field though, the answer should be obvious.
>>60432503
GIMP is good for making images to generate level files from. Pic related.
>>60432503
the biggest factor from what I've seen is the workflow difference
GIMP does a lot of Photoshop can do (arguably some things better), but always has a different key or some other quirk with the interface
this drives people mad and takes up time
do they still not have single-window mode set as default? customizing GIMP to operate like Photoshop can be done but many don't bother
if you have time and some skill then you can just figure out how to pirate Photoshop instead of figuring out GIMP; the same dilemma that faces a lot of open source software
>>60432503
Of you want to use gimp use it with addons
I don't have a problem with GIMP, haven't used Photoshop in ages
>>60432503
Why not consider krita?
Who doesn't have a pirated copy of PS already?
also
>gimp
literally gimping yourself. just use paint.net dummy
>>60432503
No one fucking uses GIMP you nerd.
Use gimp for quick ms paint tier edits and photoshop for anything that may require effort
>>60434862
paint.net is much quicker and easier to use than gimp, especially after adding plugins
GIMP is great, especially once you get into a habit of using it regularly and you develop a skill to use it
Photoshop obviously blows it out of the water and is far better for professional level stuff, but it comes with a price
That said, I've been using GIMP for ages professionally and I get by though there's times I wish for PS
>>60433495
Big if true.
>>60432503
I've never used Photoshop. I can make do just fine with GIMP. For the occasional image manipulation
>>60433495
It's not free. You still need to own a license in order to legally use it. So might just as well pirate the latest available version.
>>60432503
Adobe are absolutely not cracking down on piracy it has always been the polar opposite, creative suite remains easy to crack for market penetration.
I work in /gd/ and frontend where my employer is essentially forced to licence CC as learning an entirely new program purely to save a few shekels would make me less efficient and outweigh the meagre £50/m needed for the full creative cloud.
I also have a major problem with how intuitive the interface of free editing software is, if you lay out your menus well, provide good documentation and meaningful shortcuts there's a chance you could cut into Adobe's market share, but good UX is so seldom seen in free software that GIMP or better free alternatives take too long to learn or aren't specialised enough to cause Adobe any problems.
Sketch did it right, they took advantage of Adobe's lack of a UX tool, priced it fairly and got the workflow sorted perfectly, I genuinely use Sketch more than PS now.

>>60435123
this. best combo is
>paint.net for quick edits
>photoshop (pirated) for more serious art shit
paint.net is like a photoshop-lite
>>60435433
>>60435758
They give you a download link and a serial key and tell you you can't use it unless you bought the product previously. I think the risk of losing a court case when they decide to sue you cause you broke their rules is low.
>>60435947
CS2 is not worth the effort, it's much easier to pirate.
You can't compare them.
Also Krita > Gimp
>>60432565
Lol no they're still terrible at it.
>>60433599
This. I've switched to GIMP as a primary image editor tool because, Fuck you Adode. Here is what I can tell you with absolute certainty:
1. It's buggy - For example, the text editing is a joke. Backspace too far and you've lost all your formatting.. You'll constantly have to compromise with the software
2. It's complicated. God forbid you accidentially un-nest your toolbars. I'm not kidding, it'll drive you batty trying put things together back again.
3. It's slow. A simple scale operation takes far too long and even painting/airbrushing takes far too many CPU cycles. Again, you will have to learn to deal with the nonsense
In short, just use Photoshop. If you are a poorfag, pirate Photoshop. Only use GIMP if you have 1. patience and 2. reasonable expectations
>>60433622
I thought I was the only person who did this holy shit
>>60433622
what are those ?
>>60432565
You're gonna be fine, worst case is you get a cease and desist letter that you can ignore
>>60437540
autistic children games
>>60437610
you mean video games ?
photoshit is bloatware
gimp is well, gimped
but at least I don't end up with adobe suites and other gay shit on my computer. The amount of folders created just from installing photoshop is ridiculous. I think I had like 2 programs installed and some settings folders just from photoshop trial
fuck adobe
>>60438871
Oh no, extra folders. How will I cope! ..........
>>60438871
>not just using PS portable
Fuck GIMP, everything was so easy on PS and you keep overcomplicating even a simple paste
Fuck that man, that shit ruined my first full GNU/Linux experience
>>60440303
What's difficult about pasting? The temporary layer?
>>60436890
it's written in Python
>>60432503
Although it's not the same, I prefer to use Krita for editing.
It's like using a screwdriver for hammer things but it works for all the little things I do.
>>60440555
Ye
I like how the only way to know what the fuck is happening is because the layer name says "floating" "temporary" or some shit, and that you can't unselect it. No buttons, no temporary interface, fucking nothing. Gotta go to the documentation to not understand either.
>>60440496
Should have used an ©Adobe®™ Professional™ WEBM™ Creator Tool.
>>60433599
could it be that you're using an outdated vesion?
>>60440785
click the new layer button then
it will go from floating to normal
>>60441041

>GIMP does a lot of Photoshop can do (arguably some things better), but always has a different key or some other quirk with the interface
It's not even that, it's unintuitive as shit.
I'll use Krita as an example, because I just started using it recently and I was impressed by the inuitiveness of the UI
gimp:
>I want to draw a straight line in gimp
>There's no line tool in the toolbox
>uhhh is it in tools somewhere?
>edit???
>How the fuck do I draw a straight fucking line
>u haff 2 hold shift lol
Krita:
>Oh there's a line tool right here in the toolbox, that was easy
And that's gimp vs krita in a nutshell. I started using Krita with no clue about anything in the UI, only basic knowledge of what I wanted to do. Within the hour I was cropping images, filling in background layers, wand selecting and applying transparency, etc. etc. and I never had to google a goddamn thing, I just flailed around in the UI until I found what I was looking for.
In gimp, that doesn't happen. There is no flailing. You google how to do goddamn everything or you won't figure it out.
Krita is amazing and I wish it got more attention. It's one of the very few linux programs I've used where I didn't feel like I was fighting the UI the entire time.
>>60441201
>click pen tool
>hold shift(the industry standard)
>draw line
GIMP is enough w/o a drawing tablet.
W/ a drawing tablet, PS is mandatory.
GIMP is perfectly fine but the UI is not for retards
I've used GIMP since ~2005 when I was making shitty YTMNDs as a teenager. It's second nature to me, and I've done some crazy animation and pixel art using gimp.
If youre new, just pirate photoshop. But Im confident Gimp can do nearly anything photoshop can.
>>60441300
>But Im confident Gimp can do nearly anything photoshop can.
Adjustment Layers.
Starving artist here. I tried for a full day to set up GIMP to be usable for drawing, but it's a buggy, laggy, jittery mess. Photoshop works so much better, but for what I do I fucking love using Krita.
Photography fag here
PS has a much better GUI, better tools setup and better filters, plugins, ect
Gimp has some capatability with ps plugins, and is actually pretty comparable to ps in terms of features and what it can do. But a lot of things are harder than they are in PS for no real reason, and while the lower level basic tools are pretty equal the higher level functions of ps are great and far better than gimp.
A large part of this is probably because I'm used to ps, and I know you can change gimp to act more like ps. But gimp really has some shit that needs to be changed. Its color to alpha features is dope though and better than ps out of the box and the work around.
>>60440465
what the fuck is this even supposed to be showing?
>>60434820
As much as I like krita, the text tool is worse than useless. It's literally more effective to export and do text in inkscape.
>>60435677
The problem with UX is that all these programs are designed by programmers. You can tell just by how things are put together.
There are basically no UX guys in open source outside of some paid employees in RedHat and Gnome world, the closest we have is Krita, where actual artists contribute feedback. In fact I'd say Krita's UI is excellent, only problem is Krita is dogshit slow on windows and buggy on all platforms.
>>60432503
Try krita and blender.
>>60440303
Just press Ctrl+H after Ctrl+V
>>60437469
What do you do?
>>60437540
It's an image I'm using to generate level file from. It helps me to visualize how the level will look and feel like before implementing the engine itself.
