https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Build_a_PC

CPUs:
>G4560 - budget builds (<$500) unless G4620/i3-7100 are heavily discounted
>R5 1500x - generally all you need for 60fps with power to spare. No i5
>R5 1600 - the best value for higher fps gaming & mixed usage; 1600x if you don't want to OC
>i7-7700k - bad value but good; may have heat issues even at stock clocks
>R7/Xeon - compute/multitask/mixed use, R5 if budget

Graphics:
>G4560 iGPU - fine for LoL, dota2, rocket league, etc
>1050 if ~$105 - drop settings for 60hz if not Freesync/Gsync on many games. RX 560 if discounted.
>RX570 4GB - 1080p@60+hz, running most maxed; older games at 144+hz
>RX580 8GB - 1440p@60+hz, have to drop a few settings
>1060 - outperformed slightly by RX 580; consider if AMD is not an option (ie CUDA)
>1070 - 1080p@144hz/1440p@100+hz
>1080 - 1080p@120-160+hz maxed; 1440p at lower hz
>1080Ti - 1440p@90-144+hz; 4k@60hz in SOME games, more at lower settings
>Freesync2 & Vega soon

General:
>READ REVIEWS on retailer page to see if that cheap SSD/PSU/whatever is reliable
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity as a scratch disk
>Stop fucking confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>mATX board+case is usually cheaper
>1 SR DIMM is slower than 2 DIMMs
>Good air cooler is generally wiser than an AIO

Help I don't know where to stop

I want to run games at 4K at 120fps without starting fires, but I also don't want to spend more on my build than I need to (unless reliability is improved or RGB is added by doing so)

I want a beast that hums along comfortably at max settings on anything.

Am I good? Or is this too much

>>
Which case should i go with:
NZXT Phantom 410
Fractal Design Define R5
Phanteks Enthoo Pro

My only issue is that I have a RX480 that is overheating on my current small atx case
>>
>>60431511
>but I also don't want to spend more on my build than I need to
In that case i would personally go for an R5 1600 instead, it doesn't achieve as high framerates as the 7700k but it achieves 120fps well, and offers more performance overall (more headroom for programs open while gaming because of 6 cores 12 threads) which is a great tradeoff in my opinion
If you do get the R5 1600 then drop that cooler or get a $30 ~ $40 one, there really isn't any need to get any more than that unless you want to overclock really hard or something.
If you do not get it, drop the cooler to a $60 ~ $70 air one. High end air coolers perform very closely to high end AIOs, within 2 - 4°C, and cost much less. Getting an AIOs is generally overspending for little improvement.

also i think you are a little gay

Can't tell you about the two others but my Fractal Design Define R5 has a lot of room both for airflow and 140mm fan, i put 5 in there
It also has a built-in fan controller (3 preset speed) so i can set the speed based on the need.

Question:

I've been looking for a nice monitor for a while, was hoping for 144hz + IPS, but that's so fucking expensive right now I'm not gonna drop $800 for it.

Anyone have any experience with https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Gaming-S2716DG-LED-Lit-Monitor/dp/B0149QBOF0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1494957148&sr=8-1&keywords=dell+s2716dg

It's a TN panel but it has everything else I'd want, for $480 burgerbucks.

Obviously for gaming
>>
>>60431511
Why do you have so many hdd's and ssd's. For booting you just need 1 ssd and 3 3tb will last you a long time. Temps should be fine 7700k gets hot but with the large case and good cooling it will be fine. Personally I would never spend that much on a pc and there are other things you can take off such as the extra peripherals. But this should run every game at 120fps for the next 10 years
>>
>>60431957
The R5 is a beast... but the thermals just aren't great because of the sound insulation. Which you can fix by opening up vents and adding MOAR FANZ, but if you're going to do that, no point in the R5.
>>
>>60432010
If you aren't playing games that would be fine.
>>
>>60432034

>>
How long until launch scarcity passes and ETH crashes so RX x70/x80 prices unfuck themselves?
>>
>>60431175

Apparently this is for gaming but you're skimping on your GPU for some reason.

Try to get a 1070, especially if that means getting a cheaper mobo or dropping the extra case fans, or going with a single $150 monitor

I've heard only bad things about that mouse as well. If you really want an MMO mouse, the one by Corsair is supposed to be good
>>
>>60432058
my lad i played the 3 crysis on a $50 G1840, 2c2t 2.8GHz
Yes, the G4560 is enough for what you said. It's great at it.
>>
>>60430966
No. You lose the expensive 7700k that the 1050Ti was going to heavily bottleneck anyway, and that's over $100 saved that can go toward a decent sized SSD.

That way you can fit some of your gaymes on it and have their load times sped up too. Some games hiccup without an SSD, too.
Do you really actually need 3TB? You could probably fit a good deal of your games and such on a 500GB+ SSD.
But really, you could probably even get a 1TB SSD well within your 1K budget.

It's hard not to recommend a decent sized SSD now days. Being bottlenecked by a HDD sucks.
>>
>>60432099

>>
>>60432010
Yes. Perfectly fine. It's a great little CPU for what it is.

For newer games, it'll dip down to 30fps or even less at times, but for those things? It'll be a breeze.
It has dedicated video decoders and such that'll handle those videos.
You'll even be able to play a good deal of older or highly optimized games and older emulators like Dolphin with the iGPU.

It might make sense just waiting until Q4 or so to make your system to begin with so you could get Raven Ridge, if you were planning on adding a 1050Ti. Raven Ridge CPUs should be about twice as powerful as the G4560 while having an iGPU that's almost as powerful as the 1050Ti.

>>
>>60432248
I'd just get Ryzen now and upgrade to 7nm or 7nm+ later.

No reason to wait for next year for whatever improvements when the year after that will be 7nm which'll be an even bigger upgrade.
Same motherboard and shit, and the CPUs are cheap, so why hold off 9+ months?

>>60432255
In CSGO yeah, but I think so can a 1050Ti.
If a 1080Ti can't consistently do 1440p 144fps at very-high/max, I don't know why you think a fucking 973.5 can.
>>
>>60432255
no
too little vram and needs more powah
>>
>>60432296
I think just getting raven ridge and using igpu will likely end up being better there.
Especially for a mini-itx, since you can just get a tiny htpc box with no room for a dGPU.
But if you need a PC right now, that's not an option.

i3-6100 is bad value. G4560 is like 97% the same perf for half the price. Though if you're in the USA, I think there is the i3-7100 on sale for $77 right now. Maybe you should buy that.

No, you shouldn't lag while browsing. Though an SSD could help even there.

>>60432418
Uhh pretty sure it was confirmed already in the shareholder's meeting that the ones with APUs will be A# series chips and the GPU-less versions of those, 4cores per CCX, will be Athlons.
>>
>>60432573
will buy an ssd too. thank you!
>>
>>60432441
It did look like he was talking about Ryzen GPU... And no, if you specifically talk about the GPU in the APU, then it's still called a GPU.

"APU" units, or just units with integrated graphics, have a CPU section, and a GPU section.
>>
>>60432547
What CPU & what GPU?
70°C is fine, even 75°C is. Above 80°C is when it starts getting worrying.
Also, it's rarely temperature that is degrading hardware's lifetime, but temperature shock
>>
>>60432547
Ideal temps are 40c. Yours are a bit high. The most I let mine run before cleaning it out or apply8ng new paste is 60c. It won't do damage at the temps you have it at but I would see about lowering them. An extra fan or new thermal paste does a computer good

>>
>>60432596
There are no "ideal" temps.
GPUs run more efficient as they get warmer.
CPUs really aren't affected by heat much, maybe if you're going really hot, but they really aren't going to be any less efficient or accurate above 60c than 40c.
>>
So I've got a gtx980 from a few years ago, but I need a new monitor and I'd like to get something better than the average TN panel I have rn, maybe 1440p but definitely 144hz?

Would it be better to simply ebay the 980 and go ATI if I had a budget of ~$600?

It seems like you can get an rx580 for $250 and a decent FreeSync Montior for $350/400, compared to at least like 600$ for the gsync monitors

Any electronics are more effecient at lower temperatures (lets assume a sensible operatring range from 15c to around 100c). Running hot does not give any benefits. Now if you were making a case for thermal cycling i'd agree - constantly running warm is better than cycling from hot and cold.

Is it true that the higher the refresh rate, the better your gaming experience is going to be?

For example, I'm looking at a monitor that is capable of 144hz, but my current GPU won't be able to power 144hz constantly with high settings. The monitor can do 80/100/120/144hz tho so in the short term (before a GPU upgrade) would it be an substantially better experience running it at say 100hz??
>>

>is r5 1600 actually worth the stigma of being a 4ghz cuck

>which motherboard should i get?
which motherboard reaches 3200MHz and which doesn't is pretty random at the time being. An update is planned before the end of the month to improve RAM overclocking.
Just get a good b350 like the MSI gaming pro or Asus Prime b350 plus, doubt you need more.

>so should i just get a 1600x and call it a day
Sure you can, and lock all cores to 4GHz / 4.1GHz if you're lucky

>would buying an overkill h110i be stupid?
yes, AIOs cost much more than high end air coolers and cool only 1 - 4°C better.

>people say my old ugly piece of shit hyper 212 evo meme is good enough for ryzen,
It's enough indeed, but if you want a better cooler for better temperatures, you can always get a $40 noctua / be quiet / whatever's in this price range cooler.

refresh rate only matters if your gpu can push out fps matching your refresh rate.

100fps on a 144hz display will look the same as 100fps on a 100hz display.

the more fps the screen can display, the smoother the image will be
>>

both monitors I'm looking at have ULMB, but it doesn't work with gsync

>>
>>60433585
Silicone gets more conductive at higher temperatures, I don't actually know the "thermodynamics" for this... But, you'll notice that your card is going to draw less power at the same usage, once it heats up a little, than when it's running cool.

Either way, 40C is not an "ideal temp" for CPU and GPU, it really doesn't matter if your CPU is 75C at max, or if it's 50C at max.
HDDs DO have a specific operating range, where 40C at least was the ideal operating temperature. Lower than that would drastically lower it's life expectancy, and higher than it would too lower life expectancy a bit... This doesn't go for CPU or GPUs.
>>
>>60433884
>but it doesn't work with gsync
gsync only really matters at lower framerates. ulmb is the best if you can do 120fps

>fuckin nvidia jews, no reason gsync ought to cost $200 more than freesync

>>
>>60433875

I'm thinking I can probably get around 100fps on some of the older games I play, so overall it would be a step up from the 60hz I have right now. Then in the future I'll replace my 980 and it won't matter.

>>60433905

yeah I was thinking that having gsync might come in handy until I can up my GPU later on. I've gotta replace the monitor tho shortly which is my quandry. because I do want to get a 1440 monitor, just don't want it to be total dogshit experience until I can drop the money on a nice GPU that can easily power it all

>>
>>60433627
>would buying an overkill h110i be stupid?
Ryzen aren't housefires like delidlake.
All you need is a 140-180w TDP cooler at most, which is overkill enough to keep them cool without the fan spinning much. Like a $35 Cryorig H7.

If you really want to spend more then you can get a Le Grande Macho which is 140w cooling TDP fanless, and you can add a fan later to make it 300w later. But an H7 is really more than needed.
>>
>>60434042
You can get them cheaper new from ebay, but they aren't from autherized retailers so they might not have the factory warranty and shit.

Going to build PC for the first time for gaming. maybe some streaming (maybe some minor rigging for 4CC). This is basically a piece for piece pull from the LogicalIncrements guide. There's a compatibility issue with the Noctua HS, but idk how big of an issue that it.

Questions: I'm trying to keep the price around $1000 before peripherals like mice, speakers and keyboards (going budget with those) and I'm open to suggestions on a monitor(s?), but still trying to keep it on the cheap end.

Okay oops, 18 cores.
On average, AMD SMT is 30% better than HT.
32 AMD threads at the same IPC and clock is like 36.8 Intel threads. So better than 18c/36t. And they're clocked higher, so better still.
Heck, aren't those Broadwell Xeons, too? So it's not even better IPC, either.
There's really no point in getting them unless maybe they were $300 used.

In the past, AMD has offered 2p consumer motherboards. I imagine their HEDT platform will have 2p options.

What you don't understand is that the intel CPU that is at time lower has half the fucking core count of the Ryzen CPUs in there
Out of 6 benchmarks it only manages to be lower TWICE, and very slightly
That is not using less power.

No, it does not. Compare the 6900k (8 cores 16 threads) to any of the other Ryzen CPUs

The 850 EVO at that price is a good buy. Normally the markup for it is another $15-20. But at $160 for 500GB it's very reasonable for a "performance" (lel) AHCI SSD. Well, as reasonable as can be with NAND prices where they are.

What is this for exactly?
Go for a g4560 instead (performs within 5 - 3% of it for much cheaper), and a b250 motherboard along with it
>>
>>60438188
why not G4560 instead of the i3? You;d save money. Also grab a cheaper LSD. And that motherboard won't work. You need a motherboard where the first number in the chipset is a 2, so a B250, Z270, etc.

>Becuase it's tha same as a 6GB 1060 but with less VRAM, right?
That's usually how it's done but for the GTX 1060 3GB. The 3GB is a weaker card than the 6GB, the same way the 1070 is weaker than the GTX 1080: less cores etc etc
It is indeed more powerful than the RX 470, but it's close in price to the RX 480/580 so you should go with that instead because it's more powerful

I've got an early 2000s era system lying around, like an Athlon 2800+, Radeon 9600, etc. Nostalgic, but a bit shit. I took it in in order to try and run Mechwarrior 3, but it turns out even an early 2000s era machine is still too new to run that. Managed to get it to run on new machines shortly after anyway.

I also have the motherboard, processor, and ram of a Core 2 quad system.

Is there anything the older system is compatible with that the newer one won't be? I already have a decent modern computer, so If there's nothing the old one will run that a modern machine won't, then I'll probably just swap the core 2 quad system into the case, plus some SATA drives, and give it away.

Technically the cheapest intel uses the least power, but i doubt what you want is a cheap CPU.
How much is your CPU budget, how much performance are you seeking?
The R7 1700 is the best power efficient CPU, as in it has the best performance to power consumption ratio. i5 7500 is second but is quite a lot less powerful. R5 1600 comes third and is not that far behind the 1700 in term of performance.

>>60438696
>Is there anything the older system is compatible with that the newer one won't be?

ISA slots, even PCI slots are starting to go away on newer motherboards. So it depends on whether you have any old peripherals you want to use.

There are also some instances where you want a real serial or LPT port since USB emulated ones don't necessarily match the full functionality of a real port.

But other than that, not really. The problem with old hardware is it costs more in electricity to run than it costs to replace it with something newer.

Sadly, no, and it's still like a decade too young to have ISA slots.

I get you on the LPT and serial ports, I actually do use that shit regularly, but I've managed to get a modern-ish LGA1155 motherboard that still has them

So, cool, thanks, I'll probably rebuild it into a passable little workstation and hand it off to someone who needs one.
>>
>>60438901
I would stick with it. Nothing wrong with reusing a PSU.
If you were interested in alternatives (I wouldn't be, but I see you fishing here), I saw some deal on the EVGA G3 650, but I have no idea on what is available down under. It's a quality unit, if you could get it, though you probably don't need 650 unless you wanted substantial headroom.
You can always install it now, and get a newer one down the road if a great deal catches your eye.
