1.learn C, C#, Python and a little bit of perl. If you wanna go crazy learn VB on top. learn basic stuff for web hacking like CSRF, SQLi, XSS, RCE, rooting servers. (knowing some bash is neccessary for web hacking)
2.check out hacking forums.
3. learn some Ethical hacking.
4. proceed to check out the code in some "hacking tools" so you could have a basic idea on whats going on (if you are already done with 1)
you are pretty much done there, the rest is up to your creativity.

Go for Parrot. it has anonimity tools built in and does not run as root by default. Kali runs as root and has zero anonimity options, its a garbage for normies. Backbox is nice but its outdated and stay out of anything that's related to arch.

There are gazillion wannabe hackers that think this. The valuable skill is finding vulns, not using them. Any monkey can use vuln that he bought/read about. Our conceptions on what a hacker is might be very different if you think knowing OS internals is not more important than knowing bunch of useless languages.

I'm not telling him to learn discrete math, though it would certainly help. What's presented in the books is more about how the machine executes the program. ROP is powerfull technique even today.
Hacking forums are cancer full of misinformation. Reverse engineering is where it's at. It doesn't matter which language you use to deliver the payload. Fucking protocols are turing-complete these days.
