Why is Usenet so based
>>
I'm curious, /g/, what's the best Usenet reader? I just googled about 'em and it came back with some, like NewsPro and Usenet Explorer. What's the best one in /g/'s eyes?

Sorry to hijack your thread, OP, but this is related.

Believe it or not but usenet still has great discussions between historians. For some reason that particular group has held on to it.

Why did newsgroups become less popular and what is its relevance these days? Also is a special paid service required only to download data via Usenet, or can you get on the newsgroups without any problems and additional cost?

Usenet isn't just about downloading binaries. As the name "newsgroups" implies, it was about getting information on things and about discussion of things. What happened?
>>
>>60429445
You have to have a paid provider to use any newsgroups?
>>
>>60432199
Filegroups, as far as I know, are accessible only through providers.
>>
>>60432179
>What happened?
Andrew Cuomo was attorney general of New York, under the guise of "anti-pornography", got Verizon and Time-Warner et.al. to stop offering Usenet.

The real reason was, there was no way to consistently monetize Usenet, so there needed to be a scapegoat put in play to force people into the burgeoning social media scene on the Web.

Before there were ad-blockers, there were kill-filters on Usenet.
>>
>>60432199
Newsgroups used to have some points of free access... RemarQ and Google, in the beginning, for example... but those have all disappeared. :(

Neo-leftism is worse.
At least back in Usenet day it was a mixture of classical liberalism (legit humanitarianism) and neo-leftism (faux humanitarianism for the sake of 'evangelising' a certain agenda).
>>
>>60439037
it's a protocol for fetching and posting messages
the messages are a lot like e-mail in that they were originally plain text but developments were made that let them be anything
unlike e-mail it's all structured, it's a big like a forum except there are tiers and layers to everything and it's not always clear where a message should go, and different areas are managed by different people and they have differing ideas about moderation and what new and different things can be allowed and what groups can be created
there are also alternative structures to the big main one, or there were, and there's a section of the main one called "alt" that's much more of a free-for-all than the rest
the section naming following directory structure basically, for example comp.lang.c, alt.sex.stories, rec.arts.fine, alt.fans.karl-malden.nose (possibly a direct ancestor to 4chan and its related SA elements)
I never experienced it myself, other than reading archived posts through Google, but I had a book on the Internet from 1993 or 94 when I was younger and it went into that and other weird old shit like WAIS
anybody remember WAIS? I asked my friend that's like 35 and nerdy and he didn't have any clue what I was talking about
>>
>>60439304
ok I think I get it now.
The image I have in my head is basically an ftp client with a built in text viewer or something and different mods for each directory that each want to be kings of their own little castle.
Thanks for the explanation
>>
>>60423877
but forums are dead

The problem is where do enthusiasts go now. I checked out the sister.ly (spelling) and its shit. Private p2p is gay. Remember in BBS era everyone had to bring something to the table. Coder, ASCII, music, trader, anything to rank up.

Inb4 TOR. Sorry, not touching that, compromised.
>>
>>60439715
>The problem is where do enthusiasts go now
honestly if 4chan was a little less laxist on enthusiast boards (like /g/ or /p/) it could be great

but then look at /dpt/ threads, 95% nodevs talking meta shit, the catalog is 33% cpu wars memes and meta /g/ memes, even the gamedevs had to fuck off to >>>/vg/ because "muh gaymedev isn't programming!!1! I'm working on an imageboard in Rust and a bootloader in CoffeeScript btw"

overall I love 4chan but you just can't post any of your work because le immediate doxx :DD le harassment (even worse if you turn out to be a grill)

too bad
>>
>>60439715

>Is this basically torrent-explorer.exe?
for most downloading kids nowadays it is

Back in the day, it was similar to an email client and forums. Email programs actually supported newsgroups. You would get a list of topics and you would make posts by sending a mail to them, basically.

There are probably providers out there which will let you read and post text boards. But, it will be pretty lonely there because nobody really does into them anymore. Lots of spam and leftover people.
>>
>>60439904
>Lots of spam and leftover people.
Thats gonna be us some day :/
>>
>>60439891
It was literally developed (and is still maintained) by the U.S. government you shitlord.
>>
>>60439891

A reputation has been manifested of it, by media and enforcement. And when media creates a monster, law enforcement will follow and target.

It doesn't matter whether the protocol really is a monster, it matters what is targeted and I don't want TOR axx on my logs. 5eyes ( usa + uk + canada + au + nz ( tap into the Asia pacific data cables running under the Pacific ocean and I believe they monitor and flag TOR, and I won't use it, to have that axx logged.
>>
>>60439904
>Email programs actually supported newsgroups

Most email software still does, at least the seamonkey email client and thunderbird do.
>>
>>60439986

If TOR was just a place for various tech related enthusiasts, and rapscallions, like BBS day, that'd be cool, but hard core criminality uses TOR, and once pedos arrive in the platform ( the least tech savvy of tech enthusiast, ie, deviant/creepy tier( ... Then it's not secure anymore for anyone IMHO.
>>
>>60440084

Why do u connebt this. Simple, every time the media reports on a pedi ring bust, and recently 2 Australia ns we're down, including the destruction of daisy guy, why is it 9 times out of 10 TOR, it can't be a coincidence. So I'm not using a protocol ruined by pedos and referred to as the dark web by the media. Give me a clean platform pedos don't use, that the media isn't interested in any day, is better
>>
>>60440198

Typos excluded. I "feel" TOR is compromised and so I won't touch it.

emacs

i've never used anything else

some of the comp.lang.* groups are still good, but tons of usenet still suffers from the eternal summer faggotry

also back in the day it was heavily censored, my ISP would ban entire groups all the time related to hacking the gibson
>>
>>60440667

Cool will take a look. Basically, I think I rambled too much, but when dumb criminals turn to a protocol, like TOR, I'm instantly going to not trust the platform.

Who are the dumb criminals? Well, pedos and terrorists. Let's be real, they are lamers not leet. So I don't want to share the same platform.

This is the same reason I don't use telegram app (isis favourite tool apparently ) or Snapchat or WhatsApp, or anything Muslims use or pedos.

>>
>>60440198
there is no hidden platform or protocol that won't be used by drug dealers, smugglers, and child abusers
we can't have anything nice because of them so you can take what's present or leave it, or have something new built and then leave it once it matures (like a pedophile, come to think of it)
>>
>>60440893
you're going to need these to fix things ) )
now everything is closed()
>>
>>60420674
i too love wading through posts about dick pills and money-making scams
>>
>>60441124

I understand, but I still won't use TOR, for the very reason it has a spotlight shining on it. I still won't use telegram or terrorist used tech for the same reason. Alternatives exist that arent yet used by Muslims ( who are slow to adapt to alternative s after adopting one new tech )

And from the basic perspective, some government employee only has so much time to catch bad guys ( and put people on lists ) hmmm let's see, are they going to focus on TOR ( the new thing for baddies ) or Usenet ( LOL that's still a thing LOL? ), .. TOR of course. Are they going to focus on telegram or some other app not adopted by baddies. Telegram of course. Their focus is the GOTO s more than the alts.

Getting a baddie on TOR might get them a promotion and makes good newscopy. Spending hours in Usenet means all the TOR baddies get off scot free ( bad use of time )
>>
>>60441586

Once something has hit the peak mainstream that non tech pedos and sand niggers use it for "my privacy" than a whole layer of security through obscurity is gone because it has hit mainstream deviance levels and literal sand niggers who threaten our own safety are not computer whiz kids, they are mentally dumb and reckless but can use a smartphone, or Install a programme into a PC, level of technical aptitude.
