Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources.

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:

So reference books should all be burned?
Thats how you learn to code retard.
You learn the syntax and then you apply it after reading it.
Proffesional programmers just read a reference book when working on something new they havent nessecarly used previously.

Thats how it works faggot
>>
>>60413085
There is nothing wrong with referencing material, but having someone give you the solution should not be allowed. Most professors would not allow such a thing.

No.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
xterm is the defacto terminal for GNU/Linux. Any program is guaranteed to work for it and I don't have to worry about using a special compiled version of xterm for any program.

Fedora.
>>
>>60414303

I used to share the same opinion but after having moved from Windows (7/8.1/10) to OS X and now finally to Xubuntu. I can honestly say I haven't had a problem with it. The transition was fairly painless, a couple of hours searching to make sure everything would work as well as reading other peoples comments regarding my laptop was all it took.

All the development work I do is cross-platform, none of the software I need to use is windows specific or mac specific. I get solid battery life on par with Windows 10 and as far as I'm concerned it hasn't even stuttered or coughed at me.

Admittedly I do handle our AWS instances so I have a little background with the operating system to begin with. I'd be willing to say GNU plus Linux is already critically useful for servers my friend.

Ps. Albert and AllTray-Dev (Release is broken) confirmed for making my life too fucking easy.

What the fuck happened here /g/

So I ran
 systemctl --user enable mpd.service

To get mpd running. When I had did a start, the whole process froze. So I figured maybe it was just something that needed to be setup on boot.

Go to relog in via lightDM , pops up "Could not connect to session bus: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-sWdREA5FOX: Connection Refused"

open up a tty2, and login that way (although it takes a ufckload of time). Startx, works fine.

Can't disable mpd to disable it per user, just doesn't let me. pops out
Failed to disable unit: Process org.freedesktop.systemd1 exited with status 1

Any ideas?

>Until QNX 6.5, there was a full windowed desktop environment, with the Photon window manager.

I used QNX on the desktop when developing a DARPA Grand Challenge vehicle from 2003-2005. Back then, at QNX 6.21, you had the window manager, the Eclipse development environment, Firebird (Firefox before the name change), and Thunderbird. Then QNX marketing cut off the free version, and all the free software projects stopped making builds for QNX. Desktop usability went downhill from there.

The desktop environment had very consistent performance, because QNX doesn't swap. (It's a real time system, after all.) I could run the real-time vehicle control system and simulator at a higher priority than the desktop and not have it miss a timeout while doing compiles and web browsing at a non real time priority.

I miss QNX. It's much simpler and saner than Windows or Linux. Yet all of POSIX is available..
>>
>>60416365
>>60416157
>During college, I was hired by a small company that specialized in QNX based software to port several Unix utilities (I remember porting finger and at least one other program---I don't recall). It wasn't that bad as its POSIX support (even in the mid-90s) was pretty good.

>What really blew me away about QNX though, was that the network was invisible. You could construct a command line on machine A, to run a program on B with a file on C, redirect the output to a program on D with that output going back to A. My boss, sitting in the office next to mine, would run a communications program on his system while using the modem connected to my computer. Wild stuff.

>I also had a friend that owned a software company selling commerical X Window servers for a variety of systems. Their fastest version ran on QNX.

I'm trying to install streamlink, and there's a package (pycrypto) blocking one that would be pulled in (pycryptodome) and I'm not looking to unmerge pycrypto since so many packages depend upon it.

I have a local overlay setup, or thought I did, but I can't force portage to pull from that and install pycryptodome as a separate, independent installation. Is this even the right thing to do in the first place? I couldn't figure out how to slot this, so I tried this instead.

well, like you don't always have an open terminal window, so when you decide to work on something, you open terminal, and then you would have to type in "tmux" every time to get the bar on the bottom of your terminal and start running tmux/bisecting panels n stuff

add them to make.conf if you want to enable them globally. add them to package.use if you only want the use flag for one package.
example for globale use flags:
USE="x alsa gtk"

example for local use flag:
media-video/ffmpeg openal openh264 opus oss wavpack webp x265

obviously you'd want x alsa and gtk as a global useflag because they affect the whole system while the other useflags only make sense for ffmpeg
