What was Soviet computer technology like during the cold war compared to the west?
>>
>>60412333
They just copied American technology. It's really aesthetic some of it but it was literally just reverse engineered American tech.
I've also been looking for some old soviet science books as they apparently taught marxist thought together with physics, chemistry and mathematics. It's very interesting.

A bit behind the west (around 5 years) mostly due to differences in material sciences. The west had a massive head start in this field because they had a head start on industrialization and didn't have to rebuild after WW2. Soviet engineers were brilliant.

This may sound retarded, but commies in general chose things more complicated to manufacture. Why? So people has something to work on. Everyone has to work.
In Poland in the 70s they made some revolutionary minicomputer 10 years ahead of first IBM PCs. But the commies didn't allow it. Why? Because it was too simple. It required less time and less people to develop it, than other computers. In the capitalistic world it is the opposite, isn't it?

That said, commies made AK, simple, reliable, cheap and working assault rifle.

Surprisingly high tech! Initially, the Soviets had home grown computers. They were the first adopters of Trinary logic.

However, seeing America focus so heavily on binary computing, the politicians insisted they ditch home grown efforts into computing and insisted they by and large copied American ISAs and systems to have an upper edge in cyber warfare.

Interesting fact: the most popular computers in the Soviet Union were based off of the PDP-11. The Soviets were able to size down the TTL PDP-11 CPU into a single chip package without sacrificing capability and compatibility, something that DEC themselves were never able to do.

USSR made the best cameras and lenses in the world after WWII because they took all the machinery from Germany to Russia and Ukraine to manufacture lenses and copies of Leica cameras. The camera and lens factories were staffed by the thousands of orphan children left without parents after Russia lost 1/4 of their population in WWII.

You know what?
Americans weren't occupied by Germans for three years.
In the Russia, people got to fight for their lives, for their homes. There were many deaths - and those deaths let Russians live further.
Americans never knew what's a real war, they were never conquered.
So shut the fuck up and never appear ITT in this thread again.

>Soviets had amazing reverse engineering skills and didn't depended on private corporations, which made 100% of the countries resources available for whichever grand project they wanted

This. The downside was that they had to work on the whim of political commissars, and anyone pointing out that a project will not work would get sent to gulag. It's why they lost the race to the moon - whoever was the soviet premiere at the time wanted a launch on one of their anniversary dates, and it was just impossible to get shit done by that time.

>>60413713
This is correct. They got a real life event to go with their boogeyman event, and they guilt tripped the rest of the world over it so hard, that they were given an entire country.

Yeah old soviet books are great. I'm from an old commie state and their old chem/physics/ maths problem books are still highly sought after because they had difficult problems, seeing as they actually cared about education. Also our based teacher gave our advanced students soviet textbooks that had pages ripped out because he wasn't allowed to give out material praising Lenin and communism.

U.S. on the other hand attracted shittone of scientist from all over the globe, including USSR. US space program is based on germans. Helicopters on polish. Stealth technology on soviets. US was the place most scientists wanted to go because US payed them a lot.
And still Soviets were able to stay the best in many areas.

Space program itself may not have been based on German tech, but they got Von Braun and many other rocket scientists. The Saturn V rocket that flied to the moon is the grandchild of the V2 rockets that bombed London.

Not sure about the Stealth program, but the Nazis did indeed have experimental jet aircraft that had reduced Radar visibility. I think that may just have been a side effect of their general design however, not an intended design goal. It was one of those Horten planes.

I know this good, zx spectrum & commodore 64(more spectrum) were tops what they alone could develop/(without any outside tech).
But, since they used it rudimentary for weapons, they didn't care too much.
Since freedom of speech was not their prime concern , they didn't care for internet beyond catching up purely on warfare/spy bullshit level.
They were more concerned for space programs, because piss contest with USA .
In ex Yugoslavia there was Orao (eagle), it was Yugo of computers(maybe as strong as zx spectrum in times when Amiga 1200 was mainstream),
but people(since there was no iron curtain, it was more or less lite-communism there) were on par with world, everything was imported so no one felt like they lived in middle ages or something.

It means "electronics".
Commies weren't very creative (or sane) when naming companies or product lines.
They saw no need to come up with an actual name for a company manufacturing electronics, since according to their worldview, there is no sense in more than one of such companies existing in the first place, with it being state-owned.

Gargarin orbited the Earth.
Shepard went straight up and down again. He dipped his toe in the water while Gargarin swam a dozen laps.
It was Gargarin's small stature (he was a fighter pilot BTW) that made it easier on the capsule designers. Probably why they were able to do all those orbits.

Let's agree that the Cold War caused an enormous amount of innovated designs and incredible engineering from BOTH sides. If we didn't have WW2 & Cold War, I highly doubt our current tech would be as advanced as it is today.

Soviet Union computer tech was behind US, for various reasons. Soviet leaders were very scared of computers and networks, also by 80s most of them were old farts who didn't understand the technology at all.

The stuff made in the 70s-80s was done after a global energy crisis (oil prices skyrocketed), when the US had the capacity to change into more economic hardware, but the USSR had a too rigid system so they could not. The stuff they made before that time was world class.

Really that was the only problem with the USSR. They had a too rigid system because there were some values that they just had to uphold no matter what. Like that had to have jobs for everyone, even if said job generated a loss for the system, it was worth it because then they had 0% unemployment. Yeah, america has better economy, but also way more homeless and unemployed people.

Most of the FED/Kiev lines were operated initially by the engineers and designers from Leica/Zeiss, the quality in the early runs was literally the same as the original ones, they were literally made from the same stockpiles used before the war
The Soviet production kept comparable quality until the late 50's, when the production demanded by the state was increased, and thus quality started to suffer
Still, the cameras were great until the 70's, when the original designers/engineers retired and the Soviet replacements folded to the state demands, simplifying the design and skimping on QC
The later cameras are still respectable, since the Soviets polished the original complex designs into a simple reliable and easy to manufacture camera
Also, you seem to be confusing FED with Holga, the lenses used in Kiev/FEDs were good in their entire production run

US had the most impact in ww2 of any group
it fought on 2 fronts simultaneously, supplied all of it's allies, and made the atom bomb to solidify it's impact
USSR lied to allies so it could get the capture of Berlin, when the war was pretty much already won
USSR had the third most impact though (cuz germany is second)
With Allies only focusing on Africa at the time Russia finally managed to dig it's boots in the ground and begin a turnaround. Their turnaround was more just Hitler's luck running out though, and him being a fucking retard when it comes to war finally biting him back.

Why are you showing me this pic? It doesn't prove that nationalism isn't dumb. It just prove that black people are less intelligent. So what?

read this:

Hodson, G. & Busseri, M.A. (2012). Bright minds and dark attitudes: Lower cognitive ability predicts greater prejudice through right-wing ideology and low intergroup contact. Psychological Science, 23, 187-195.

White nationalists are no better than nigs and yet they're still treated like better than them just because they look human.

And what about that small margin of exeptionally smart nigs? Do they deserve to be treated worse just because they look like some other people who are usually dumb?

Collective thinking and treating groups of people like a mass, not like a group of individual cases is a very commie thing to do. Nothing to be suprised though, nationalists and commies are the same shit when it comes to ruling - dirty, smelly collectivist subhumans, just with different slogans.

But because our cornuptheass retard of a leader didn't have any interest in it development was slower than in U.S. and it had no possibility of reaching your average consumer. Later all of that shit got integrated with military and now SU and consequently Russian are lagging behind military tech since our own lags behind, thats why you see le ebin russian hackers as if you can't make a better tech then your enemy you learn how to jam it. And we missed a IT train that India used and now enjoys pajeets literally everywhere in IT.

also, americans had the nazi scientists. withour wernher von braun they would have never reached the moon before mid 70s.

actually, the m16 based on the stg44.
>>
>>60430273
the russian success against the wehrmacht was only possible because the soviets could afford to have 10 russkis killed by a german soldier until he was taken out. they pulled that off until they had retaken stalingrad and went into the offense.

While SU airplane engines were hit or miss your comparison is retarded as USA had an easy time having no war on it's soil. You know who was making engines in SU? All men were on the frontline, those who were left as women, kids and elderly people were making those engines. Props to SU engineers for making something that can be assembled by completely unqualified labour.

If you dig deep enough everyone stolen from each other when it comes to weapons. Whole U.S. early air force was just copycat from Brits.

Soviets were all about symbolism and not practicality. They wanted to launch a rocket to coincide with the anniversary of a revolution, even if it was not practical, and this lost them the race to the moon. They wanted 100% employment ratio, even if it meant creating uneconomical jobs that cost more to sustain than they contributed economically. They wanted to stop the Nazis at Stalingrad because the city bore Stalins name - and it cost millions in casualties and devastated the city, but they held out.

>They wanted to stop the Nazis at Stalingrad because the city bore Stalins name - and it cost millions in casualties and devastated the city, but they held out.
true. also, on the other side, the germans could have taken moscow by the time without much trouble but hitler also wanted to have "stalins city". the war in russia could have ended before a single american soldier would have stepped on european soil.

I think the biggest shit maker in their minds is their television. REN TV and ROSSIJA RTR the main ones.

REN TV being the crown jewel. 'Documentaries' with ALLCAPS level talking narrators. Germany, ww2 stuff and America mentioned left and right.

Mystical new age like shit of the highest magnitude.

They even had a conspiracy theory that split and mirrored a half of a painting and compared it to Darth Vader one time. Western SJW media are plebs compared to Russian telly stuff.

>hey wanted to stop the Nazis at Stalingrad because the city bore Stalins name - and it cost millions in casualties and devastated the city, but they held out.

It stalled Germans more then enough to pay off, after it you would get other cities being taken out and if Germans would take that one they would have a place to settle in and rest.

>>60433345
By similar logic all of the high commandment of SU could have been moved further deep into the east and continue the war with minor inconveniences, wearing down Germany more and more.
>>
>>60434273
stalin believed the reports of germans raiding western russia were british lies and the main soviet staff was still in moscow when the first german tanks came close to the city. stalin was an incompetent idiot.

Unless the BBS was in your city, you had to pay long distance charges. This is a big reason most people in the US didn't have network access until Compuserve, Prodigy, and AOL came around. Even if the US had an edge in the 80's, the people who cared were pariahs. It wasn't the cool hip thing to be a nerd.

Some original architectures, lots of clones. They don't seem that far behind the west but far more inaccessible, Soviets also seemed to have a fetish for shoving PDP-11 compatible chipsets into everything. They also almost universally had a nice, rugged aesthetic to them.

Seriously though, why didn't the USSR just make a supercomputer to run their economy?

>>
>>60438789
Because those in power just want to enrich themselves. Not that making a super computer would have actually helped that much anyway, economies are not purely number driven, a lot of economics is based on the feelings on the humans in the system and those humans often act in erratic ways.
