That's impossible to answer without knowing what you're interested in and what you can do. Maybe try improving some software you're using yourself already.

Originally I was going to make this either in OpenGL using C++ or using D3D. I'd still like to do it in C++, but if you want to do it in another language I'm more than will to accommodate you.

Find which programs you're using are written in a language that you know. Then check active issues. Most minor bugs are usually trivial to fix.

The two Nyaa projects seem to be vey actively developed so quite possibly things will have change before you do anything.
