You're not likely to notice any difference in modern games that don't make use of all of those cores, but in the future games will be optimized for more cores, especially since Intel is moving to 6 cores for their next line of consumer CPUs.

Even when comparing the 1700 against the i7-7700K, there's no games with that much of a performance difference. There's a few "problem games" with broken/poorly threaded engines like Fallout 4 and ARMA 3. The most difference is ~20 FPS. That's about it.

I used an I7-3770k with 16gb DDR3 and a GTX660 TI as my battlestation for 4 years. Retired it in November for an I7-6700k with 16gb DDR4 and a GTX 1080.
The performance increase was noticeable but it was mostly due to the graphics card.
I did notice the 6700k is runs much cooler when overclocked, despite the 3770k having better cooling.

Yes, I could buy a GTX 1080 Ti for $700+, but my past experiences with Nvidia were not very good and I'm hoping I can get 4k/60fps from Vega at a lower cost.
