I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Trying to install Arch on my t470 and the USB drive won't boot. I'm holding shift while restarting, selecting "USB HDD", and it just goes right to windows. Wat do? My two Ubuntu live USBs boot just fine. Never installed Arch before, not sure what I'm doing.

Also, on the ubuntu livecds, everything is small. Text, windows, icons, etc. Is this because of my hi-res screen? How do I make things normal sized?

With FF, there a a lot of extensions that allow you to map shortcuts, I know that vimperator is a popular one. I also believe there is a way to define them yourself in settings, either in FF or chrome.

No, I want to go balls deep. I'm tired of fucking around dual booting Ubuntu and Windows. This new laptop came with Windows 10 anyway, which I promised myself I'd never use.
I'm watching youtube guides on installing Arch, and honestly I'm kind of intimidated. My Debian stick still isn't booting, but I've decided on Arch. I'm just worried that I"ll format my drive, install Arch, Arch not working, and then not having Windows to fall back on.

>How different is Arch from Ubuntu once its installed?
Expect more bloat and more breakage.
>>
>>60401731
The only thing that's really different between different distros is the commands you use to manage packages. Ubuntu has apt and Arch has pacman, both are pretty simple. One thing I'd recommend for Arch is get yourself on the mailing list for Arch. Since it's a rolling distro, some package upgrades can fail or bork your system if you don't prepare for them properly. It's rare, usually only one wonky package pops up a year but it's good to know before you screw something up.
>>
>>60401713
If arch doesn't work right when you install it you'll still have the install disk, so you can keep fucking with it until it's working. Arch isn't very hard to install if you read the wiki, and generally you can ask in this thread if you get confused. Though, to address >>60401731 The main difference between arch is that it doesn't make any assumptions about the user, and as such it won't do anything that you don't explicitly make it do. In practical terms this means that you do the installation by hand and perform each necessary step yourself. This also means that you need to install any programs you want to use in arch by hand. This includes things like non-default graphics drivers, and window managers, terminal emulators, browsers...

Excellent advice, first time I used Arch like 9 years ago, I borked the partitions and it wouldn't boot. Was annoying but since it was on a blank HD, it wasn't a big deal. And if you want the Arch "minimal" experience, just do a base install with Antergos and you'll boot right into the terminal.

You have an installer do all the labor for you, end result is the same, they both use the same packages. >>
>>60401916
>What's the difference between Arch and Antergos?
Antergos doesn't make you feel proud after finishing the install like Arch does, so you woun't enjoy the smug when posting: "I'm using Arch Linux, btw."

Can anyone explain why this happens? Is /media somehow special? I was gonna use it for all my other hard drives at first but decided to use /mnt for this instead. I'm not interested into changing that behaviour now but am curious what exactly is wrong.
>>
>>60402515

>>
>>60402524
There shouldn't be anything special about /media. On debian, I have created subdirectories under it just fine. Is it currently a mountpoint, though? A read-only filesystem mounted on media would explain your error.

Autofs? Funny, I do have an ubuntu at home yet I had never heard of that.

You can try to have things your way. If you stop the autofs daemon, you should be able to create any directories under /media. I don't know if autofs will prevent you from mounting things there when it's running again, though.

You could go the autofs way, edit its configuration and put it in charge of mounting those hard drives and dynamically creating the corresponding mountpoints (if you need to edit anything - maybe it works automagically already?).

As a middle ground, you could maybe also tell autofs to gently fuck off from /media, create a subdirectory for it, it does its business there, you manage /media yourself. Well, letting autofs be in charge of /media and using /mnt for your manually-configured mounts is also a good middle ground, and with a lower risk.

Unless you feel the pride of a unix sysadmin burning in your blood, I recommend going the autofs way.

noticed something weird about groups in GNU/Linux systems:
my multi-user system has a privileged group that gets to access certain files. let's call that group "mod".
on UNIX, if the user "anon" with groups "anon" and "mod", active group "anon" tries to access a file that belongs to the group mod, he is not allowed to do so, unless he changes his active group to mod.
however, on the linux system I run such a change is not necessary.
that would be fine, privilege-wise, but if that anon now writes a file owned by "mod" while his active group is "anon", the owner group of that file is now no longer "mod", but "anon".
Now no other mod has access to that file, which sucks.

what are ways to deal with this?

Sounds like your DE is not running all its components.

If there is a file named ".xsession-errors" in your home dir it may contain clues (it's a "dot file" - display hidden files with control+h or view -> show hidden files or something similar).

Another way to troubleshoot this is to create a new user and log in as it. If the DE runs fine, then something in your configuration got borked. It may be hard to track down exactly what and fix it but at least you could always delete your DE configuration and start a fresh one.

Gnome really seems like the only one that's really polished at this point.
Although I currently don't use a Wayland compositor as my main display server, I've been contributing to another wayland compositor lately. It's really quite a fucking mess.

Pacman question.
What do you do if you want to upgrade/ install a new package, but your system haven't been updated?
Do you run -Syy then -S package name?
>>
>>60404746
You can just use # pacman -Syyu package name, as one command. Make sure you never download a new package without updating (at least don't do it unless you've updated fairly recently), otherwise your system can get messed up.
>>
Not 100% gnu/linux related, but sqt didn't help. I want to run a small website for myself, just to host a few files and display a bit of text. How expensive is it and how would I do about running one from home? I was just going to use a raspberry pi with Debian or something, is that good enough? I know basic desktop gnu/linux usage but nothing server related. I need Apache or nginx right? How do I buy a website domain and how much should I pay for it?
>>
>>60404815
>never download a new package without updating
But what if I want to do that?
For example Xfce weather widget stopped working.
So I need to update, but this would mean I'd have to update Firefox as well.
>>
>>60404831
>I was just going to use a raspberry pi with Debian or something, is that good enough?
It all depends on usage. If it's just to be very low traffic, that would be enough.
>I need Apache or nginx right?
I would pick nginx from those two.
>How do I buy a website domain and how much should I pay for it?
Go to some domain registrar, buy something, and point their DNS A record at your IP address (and AAAA record if you have an IPv6 address).
It depends on the TLD you're buying. Some of the trashy ones are as low as $5 a year. A more typical one would be $10-$20 a year.
>>
>>60404716
It clearly says it can't load the driver.
I thing GalliumOS is Xubuntu-based, so run 'dpkg -S i965_dri.so' to determine which package provides the file and then install it.
>>
What are the downsides of using Calculate Linux? I've been curious about Gentoo but the installation progress seems to take too long. With Calculate Linux everything just works and the experience is better than any other distribution I've tried.
>>
>>60404846
You should update everything and keep your whole system up to date, no matter what, and avoid holding back updates for certain packages.
"Warning:When installing packages in Arch, avoid refreshing the package list withoutupgrading the system(for example, when apackage is no longer foundin the official repositories). In practice, donot runpacman -S package_nameinstead ofpacman -Syu package_name, as this could lead to dependency issues."
-Arch Wiki
Partial upgrades are a terrible idea and an easy way to break your system, don't do it.

alternatively you can use the free domain of https://www.noip.com/ . your domain will then end in something like "ddns.net" but its basically free dns. you will need this: http://www.noip.com/support/knowledgebase/installing-the-linux-dynamic-update-client/ running

this program runs on your pi and will update the IP to the dns server

Ideally I'd like to host a simple website that looks simple like stallman.org, that has simple text and links to something like an ftp server on the same device, that lets you download a selection of files from the server once you enter a password. >>
>>60404652
Okay, that is fucked up indeed. You can clearly see all those necessary gnome services dying there. It doesn't say what the root cause is - failure to connect to some daemon, it seems, judging from the first line.

I can't provide specific advice on how to track down the point of failure, or which files to delete, as I know nothing about unity. For starters, look for unity- or gnome-related directories in your home directory and under .config, maybe .local too. Run a search for where to find unity's config files, try to narrow down the suspects.

Do note the possibility that deleting those files while running (what's left of) unity may not work - it might write back the borked config when you log out. If you seem to hit a wall, this may be it. There are several ways to access and delete your files without running unity: you can run a different DE if you have any, you can boot from a live USB/CD and mount your hard drive, or you can log in in text mode if you're comfortable with the CLI (from the usual login screen, control+alt+F1; come back with control+alt+F7, maybe F6 through F9 if it doesn't work).
>>
>>60405032
If you do have some outdated packages, -Syyu or just Syu will fix it (unless something is badly wrong but I doubt it is) The second y forces it to sync repos even if you did it recently. Basically, always use Syu, never just -Sy.
>>
>>60405014
Just search up "nginx http authentication" or whatever. There are shitloads of guides online.
Also, setting up HTTPS with letsencrypt wouldn't be the worst idea.
>>
>>60405057
Why -Syu packagename is better than -Sy packagename?
>>
>>60405098
because -u upgrades all packages, dependencies etc. included.
>>
>>60405098
-S just searches for the package and offers to install it.
-Sy syncs the repos.
-Syu actually downloads and updates new packages. So -Sy followed by -Su is the same as -Syu.
>>
>>60405182
So if a package doesn't have any dependencies -u isn't needed.

If your X server has shat itself, you may be able to reset it with control + alt + backspace.

If not, you can also switch to a virtual terminal (control + alt + F1), log in and restart the X server (depends on your particular init system and X server -
sudo /etc/init.d/x11-common restart
may be one option).

In even direr situations, you can still tell Linux, and I do mean Linux your kernel, to bring down the system gracefully. This is where the other anon's advice comes in. Do make sure that the appropriate requests are enabled - look into /etc/sysctl.conf as part of your search.

Okay, disregard that, zgrep works on both compressed and uncompressed files alike. I was thinking of zcat, which annoyingly only works on compressed files - zrun cat solves that.

So if I follow the Gentoo Handbook to a T, i should theoretically be able to successfully install it.

I prefer arch, but I would say go with an ubuntu environment over debian. The repository system in debian I think is just too silly for it's own good.

There's nothing wrong with debian testing though so if you're used to it you'll be fine. If you're looking for something new, arch is good in a lot of ways as well.

Hi, i installed qbittorrent by using the official stable ppa from the qbit team
>ppa:qbittorrent-team/qbittorrent-stable
According to that ppa, latest stable version is 3.3.12 but i got 3.3.7
Why is that and how do i get 3.3.12?

I did that. Then I had to figure out how to get my DE working by myself because I'm not a GNOME cuck.

In fact, everything past "boot into Gentoo" I had to figure out on my own. Took me days to get a useable desktop.

Then I accidentally dd'd my hard drive, got mad, and installed Fedora.
>>
>>60410922
It isn't.
There is hardly anything one can learn from custom scripts, except that most build systems suck.

Because I'm leaving windows 10 for being unstable and I don't want to repeat the experience again.

How about this one guys? I love you.

>Create a bash script that manages your own git repositories. You have your own git repositories in one directory (done with "git clone <address>") and the script should enter each of these subdirectories (let's call them "projects"). When a project is found with supported configuration, the project is updated with "git pull" and successful update can be checked from the non-existence of the "Already up-to-date." string.

One of my teachers told me sourcing info is a skill, and there were no instructions pertaining to these exercises forbidding using other people as sources, in fact we were encouraged to work together. I have 10 problems total and I did the first 3 myself. Im learning the information anyway. So yeah dont feel bad for helping me. =D
>>
>>60412436
There's a difference between working together and having someone do it all for you. You aren't going to learn that way. In short, you're just shooting yourself in the foot.

why not *.git?
>>
>>60412490
Fair enough..
>>
>>60412490
You learn programming by reading source code. Better to read a good example instead of hacking something together from web searches.
>>
>>60412571
Why should it be *.git? The directory is called ".git". It's not a file with an extension.
>>
>>60412559

Yes and when asked to make a program for which there is no example of, what then? You don't ask someone to make an example for you.
>>
>>60412702
Read 10 examples and you can program the 11th on your own.
