hurrr asus can't into rgb control in their bios and their software, aura to control has a high chance of killing the led's on the crosshair vi hero atm.

Huh? How so? Ryzen guys reporting in. Crosshair board was well worth the $140. LEDs or no LEDs doesn't bother me much. My build is in a windowless fractal R5.

Depends. The 8350 truly shines when overclocked. What clock speed are you running. Going to have to be something decently high for me to tell the bouncer to let you in. I ran y fx-9370 at 5.3ghz.
>>
>>60391629
Microcenter. If you bought either a 1700X ($340) or 1800X ($450), they gave you $100 off any compatible motherboard. Technically I could have gotten like the Asrock pro B350 for free if wanted. (Technically $0.01 because they need to register the purchase in the system)

Any purchase of 1500X to 1700 gives $50 off.

Yup. Microcenter has that deal all the time. Since launch honestly. I think it's a pick up only deal though. My buddy just got his 1600 and Asrock B350 pro, and 16GB ddr4-3200mhz from EVGA for $315-ish after taxes. If you buy CPU/Mobo, there are sometimes $10-$25 off on ram kits too. Also if you buy all 3, usually deals around the same on SSDs.

On the flip side, intel gives $20 off if you buy their 7700k lol.

all over the overclock.net offical crosshair vi hero thread. elmor (offical asus rog engineer assigned to the crosshair) confirmed aurora right now is a pile of garbage on the crosshair vi hero. nothing but issues. even raja (offical asus rep) recommends not using aurora since it too can kill gskill rgb trident ram. crosshair bios only allows turning them off and on. no option to change the color.

mobo chipset and CPU are the last pieces of my original 2014 build, let's hope Ryzen is the competitive spark for some renewed generational gains so that Intel actually pushes out something over a 5% performance boost next round

also, front and back thermal pads with some cheap heatsinks work fucking wonders on cooling NVMe M.2's, Samsung really should include a thermal solution in-box if their drives are gonna run so warm

That can't possibly be correct. And lack of LLC and SOC Voltage manipulation is what made me return my Gigabyte gaming K5 X370 board in favor of my now crosshair X370.

Glad I didn't have any ram issues. My ram isn't high speed (2400mhz, manually clocked to CL13, down from CL14) so setting XMP worked fine.

As far as I've heard, the tai chi board was one the most solid boards available, even at launch. The BIOS updates it's received are probably the same as any other. Memory compatibility tweaks, lower SOC Voltage, etc. Good luck actually getting a tai chi board though as last I checked, they're sold out everywhere.

The reported voltage in cpuz is wrong indeed.

I sure hope they add the LLC and SOC options, the board is pretty much perfect for me.

Good layout with lots of features. Only thing lacking is a usb3.1 controller, but that I can easily just get a pcie card for if I ever need it.
And no bclk overclocking support, but considering 4 boards in total for the whole platform has that feature, a b350 budget matx board not having it was no surprise.

Hope more boards in the future gets it tho, including more affordable matx boards.

The memory for a good deal of am4 boards, tops out on 2.4ghz, as do mine. This is as far as I understand more or less going to be fixed via bios updates.

Air cooling is objective better
>Air coolers have one point of failure--the fans
>If they break, a decent air cooler can still passively cool
>A water cooler has inherently three point of failure
>The fans, the radiator and the pump
>Any one of those catastrophically failure could mean damaging your parts
>Cannot passively cool and is louder to boot
>Including the fact they recommend your fans running louder than the air cooling equivalent

Did a nice, small build for someone and had a brand new pump break within three months and ended up having to buy the computer back off of him because he simply didn't trust it even after repairing it--never again

Got a new 1600X build.

I'm going to replace the graphics card, GTX 670 and yes sag is a problem with this card, when Vega comes out and decide between their 1070 equivalent or the RX 580. I'm also going to replace the power supply cables with some braided white ones and get some industrial black Noctua fans instead of the stock beige ones that come with the NH-D14.

What other improvements should I make? I don't like LEDs.

The most maintenance that you'd have to do with an air cooler is removing dust and it will last many years.

But any mechanical part has an inherent lifetime--nothing lasts forever, and these are literally the cheapest of the cheap parts that these same two or three companies are throwing together for these 'epic gaming' computers. By that rationale, you would still see the first few water cooling systems to come out, but you don't--people either replace them out of vanity or they break.

I've constantly wanted to replace my Noctua, but I keep coming back to the fact that, as nasty as it is being swapped between builds, it still works as it did since day one.

a while back we had a disagreement over your fans, I thought you had too many and you suggested that having the extra fans helped your motherboard temperatures, I commented that my temps were only 30c under load with 1.45v, you said you doubted it, I said I would see
I'm a big enough man to admit when I'm wrong
stuck a thermal probe in between 2 fets on the motherboard (not in between the mosfet and cooler, between 2 in the row) and measured my temps, here's the results
honestly, with the heat the 8350 is putting out I'm not too surprised, nor upset with the results, but I'll give you that, you we're right. Turns out that temperature is related to the NB from what I can tell on my motherboard, there is a chance it is the SB however.

my old house fire 8350 on asus m5a97 motherboard. it was a humble 6 phase design. stayed icy cool @ 4.4ghz. i was able to push it to 4.6ghz but the heat output was unbearable. i regret selling it tbqh. even though it was a house fire that matched a first generation nehalem at 3ghz in single threaded performance, it was fun to mess around with.

>>
>>60401994
it really is a beast, that's why I'm a bit disappointed with the current crosshair. ROG used to be for overclockers and enthusiasts first, the cream of the crop. Now it's just really high end gaming stuff, with other boards beating it out, ie. taichi. I know it's just a hero board but ffs unless they release a formula or extreme edition later and make some improvements I'm still chalking that up to a loss
but yeah the damn heatsink for the VRM/NB has a heatpipe through the whole course of it, plenty of surface area, really pretty nuts how heavy it is too
>m5a97
I used that board for the PC I built for my brother, for the money it was killer, hot his 6300 rocking at around 4.8 daily pretty easy on that board. not the same league as the crosshair, but almost a third of the price

Changelog since last post:

>replaced my 3,5" desktop drive with a 2,5" laptop drive.
>no more ghetto modding with mousepads to prevent vibrations

As a side note, I had to cut those HDD rubber washers in half and slide them inbetween the caddy and the drive because the 2,5" holes are primarily meant for SSD's.

Possible changelogs in the future:
>maybe buy a 240/360 AIO meme? (Fractal Design Celcius S24/S36, Cooler Master MasterLiquid 240 or DeepCool Captain 240/360 EX)
>wait for mini-itx Ryzen motherboards and buy a mini-itx computer case?
>buy AMD Vega? (I don't game much, and since Square Enix put Deus Ex on hold for shitty Marvel comic book games instead it will probably be years before the sequel to Mankind Divided gets released)
>if not buying Vega, then maybe buy an Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme IV and slap it on my reference RX 480 card?
>>
>>60398514
What performance do you actually gain water cooling you don't with air?
Does a cpu perform better if it's 5 degrees cooler?
>>
>>60403459
not really but most chips are thermal limited. If you can pull more heat out of the die you can crank up the volts and multi higher. Heat also degrades chips so an oc that is running at 80c on air will live a longer life at 60c on water.
>>
>>60403523
But once the water warms up in watercooling rigs it remains at higher temps for much longer.
If the gpu is watercooled and oc'd that heat will affect the cpu. Too many drawbacks for me personally to even consider it. I would consider a closed loop just for the cpu though.

>>
>>60404851
>>60404774
honestly it doesnt look too bad my man. If there's any way for you to tidy up the gpu cable, maybe a different routing path/grommet that owuld be good. biggest issue is the non sleeved rainbow effect, sleeving/replacing those could help, beyond that i would try to manage front panel connections a bit more if possible as well, they seem like they're just kinda hanging around
>>
>>60405069
The front I/O doesn't have cutouts anywhere else but the tray above, so I have no other choice, but to let them hang. Same issue with the front ventilator cable, I can not route it below this compartment.

I have thought about re-sleeving, but the problem with having seamless sleeves would be that it would increase the cable diameter, so the cables would curve higher, and protrude well above their current height (hope you know what I mean).

So I would trade aeshetic cables for even less component visibility.

The radiator dumps the heat outside.. Thats the whole point.

If you have a good enough radiator for your systems heat output, the water temp really dont rise much.
And water going through a waterblock 0.5cm over the cpu core, pulls the heat away MUCH faster than a air cooler, so the cooling capacity is way better.

If you don't care about getting the most overclock out of your hw, then I agree.. Way too expensive and too much hassle to be worth just lowering your temps.

That's actually Arctic Freezer 33, but yeah my earlier computer actually had a 212 Evo. They have a very similar form factor.
