That's one game that runs pretty darn poorly on GNU/Linux, too.

There are plenty of other games who actually do run very well on GNU/Linux.

There's actually a pretty huge catalog available.

http://store.steampowered.com/linux#tab=TopSellers

You may think you know anything about the availability of GNU/Linux games but you clearly don't. If you did then you would be aware that about 60% of all the new games released on Steam are available for all three platforms (Windows/MacOS/SteamOS=Linux).

GNU/Linux gaming is already a reality. You just haven't realized it - but you will. Because all we need is more Windows worms and exploits like wanna decrypt and the nations will be forced to accept the GNU World Order.

Correction: LInux users can handle complex operating systems. Just not complex games. And while I understand that the good people of /g/ look down on gaming, what I don't get is why they would rather sit around whining that other people like them, as is so often the case here.

Linux is not for games. That's apparent. Sure, there are games for it, some pretty good, but it's not much different than being able to play Doom on a calculator. You know it's not meant for it, it won't be worth a fuck, and it doesn't effect how the calculator is used by everyone else, but there will still be sad little shits sitting around punching in 8008 and complaining that someone out there is having fun and not forcing themselves to be sad as well.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>60373353
Harsh truth. The most vocal Linux advocates on this board less sad, jealous lives.
>>
>>60369505
it is on linux and it runs pretty well but the stuttering is pretty bad. is it the fx-6300 and rx 470, or just linux? the stuttering isn't as bad on the open source driver and latest mesa as it is with amdgpu. i find vsync makes the stuttering a lot better, there must be something weird with the way linux gpu drivers are queing frames thats causing percieved stutter maybe?
>>
>>60373349
Pretty much. There are games intended for and ported to linux, but they're shit at best. I use a desktop for Windows/Linux dual boot. I have Dying Light installed on both of them, and it runs like shit in Linux. With very few exceptions, games are better on Windows. There's really no point in fighting over it, or pretending that Linux has comparable offerings. If you want to be productive/program, use Linux. If you want games, use Windows. And stop bitching that another person isn't using a solipsistic anon-approved operating system.

Good for you. I have nearly 200 games on Steam. less than 40 are available on Linux, and the ones that actually run on Linux have frame rate issues at minimum. Some don't run at all. And my rig isn't a fucking /g/ toaster. I'd love for more games to be available on Linux, but I'd settle for a little optimization for the ones that already are. 38 games in my library that play great on Windows and are like alpha test releases in Linux.

could possibly be shader compilation
some newer games have lots of complex shaders, which take a noticable amount of time to compile

the latest version of mesa implements a shader cache, which helps a lot

Yes, we know. Gaymes are wangblows only because dx is proprietary. there should be minimal difference between them provided the "critical paths" are kept up to date
for games, you want at least linux and mesa (or proprietary driver) to be up to date
you will also want to consider using the latest wine (or even wine staging), when using that
there's usually some way to get the latest versions of those separate from the rest of the system

I mean lets get real for a moment. You install windows 10 in about 45 minutes and for most linuxes its about the same but remember. Biggest base linuxes are about 1 gigabytes or 2 while windows 10 can be more than 5 gigabytes of data. And what happens when you open them. On linux there are about 2 functional buttons, 3 are nonfunctional and in those two buttons there are some pictures to play with. Maybe slide down or up. On windows though, you feel like a god. Its professional its fast, its all functional. You have a godlike user interface. The thing that linux does not have. You have those two buttons in linux, but you still search google for codes to write in terminal. Linux is free because its not worth a penny. Nobody would sell a paper without taking the money. Just not sure why people still buy android while windows phone does 10 times more. Trust me. When you work with windows you know some genius ground breaker dedicated himself to give you an operational os

OK..

I played "Battle for Wesnoth" and it was pretty good (music, graphics and so on), but somehow too lengthy for me.

I've heard about "0 A.D." which seems to be an "Age of Empires" clone. Is it any good? Or got any other recommendations?

That's a whole lot of not an argument.
There is literally nothing, purely technologically speaking, that is stopping Linux from being a gaming platform.
Most graphics cards are supported, AMD much more so but still.
Vulkan is literally the future as it is much easier to write engines for and it is cross platform, and it is free and open source.
Linux is much more efficient with resources than Windows is, which really helps with Gayming.
All the other memes that video game playing man toddlers spout are bullshit.

From the benchmarks I've seen we're not missing something by Microsoft keeping DX proprietary. I've got the distinct impression that NVidia cards perform worse on DX12 vs the older DX11 and AMD cards perform pretty much the same on DX11 and DX12. Vulcan on the other hand seems to perform better on Intel, NVidia and AMD: And the vulcan support in MESA git is getting pretty darn good.

Neither does Windows, it doesn't cover Android, console etc. games. And no specific version can run all older Windows or even DOS titles natively; there will be emulation and that generally does work just as well on Linux.

But Linux sure has less games than Windows. It still has more good games than pretty much any specific console and enough decent games to play for many years.

>>60383291

You also did that? We did dozens and it was great fun. But that was just our circle of people.

Wasn't like TA was hugely popular around here, at public LAN parties we were usually the ones that had to get other people to play TA. Also always fun.

It's not just nostalgia though, Zero-K is still good for competitive and cooperative play. (Most other Spring RTS games I'd recommend more for just coop... they're mostly kinda wonky in competitive play).

I've used GNU/Linux since Windows 98 was popular and for me Windows is way more trouble. I can't do anything in that useless joke of an operating system. This is why I think it's great that Valve / steam has brought gaming to GNU/Linux in a very real way.

There were essentially no games 3 years ago. Now there's plenty. Sure, there are some missing titles. Don't care. We're in a far better situation than we were not that long ago today.

If you're a NEET "hardcore gamer" manchild then GNU/Linux probably isn't for you and you should stick with an xbox or something.

GNU/Linux has 25% of all games on Steam, 42 of the top 100, and six of the top 10.
Its still missing some of the big AAA devs, which depending on your attitude towards them can be viewed as just making them easy to boycott.

Combined with emulation and compatibility layers you may not be able to play everything on GNU/Linux yet, but there's no shortage of good games to play.

Wine's problem is that the main devs on it primarily make money off the Mac version and make their coding decisions based off that.

So Nine and other similar projects that implement full speed D3D9 support on top of low level Linux-only APIs get rejected in favor of slow D3D9->OpenGL 4.1 wrapping.
Their excuse is that Nine only really works on one vendors hardware, but then for their D3D11 work they use OpenGL compatibility profile which essentially locks it to Nvidia.
