Because W7's Windows Update perpetually maxes the CPU and RAM and makes no progress at finding updates. I downloaded KB4012212 last night to rest easy, but other than that I keep the update service disabled. I don't need my shitbox to be any slower than it already is.
>>
>>60366804
Barebones newly installed Windows 7 can't update because the updater needs to be updated first but for that you have to download it directly. Essentially the update system is broken, unless you are already updated.
>>
>>60366836
How the fuck did M$ manage to fuck up the updating system that badly? Do they just want to punish people who haven't hopped on the good-goy W10 bandwagon?

Did I say anything about not running ports in stealth mode? You made assumptions based on literally, nothing. My statement had nothing to do with my configs, it was merely pointing out the futility of updating after the fact. When the ShadowBrokers news broke, anyone with two brain cells should have immediately closed the appropriate ports and promptly updated. We were told this was going to be a serious matter almost the minute this was made public. You can't wait with issues like this when things like Shodan and Zmap exist.

The ransomware tries to connect to the port 445, the port SMB uses. If it succeeds, it'll use the eternal blue exploit and drop its payload.

Do netstat -an on your command prompt. See if you're listening to port 445. If you're, configure your router or windows's firewall to block connections to it. Voala! No need to install Micro$oft updates.

Unless you're running a server, of course. You'll probably need to use SMB, you can't just block it.

i was gone from using windows for a long time
using a vm with a dynamically sized diskfile
i installed windows 7
and after some time of work i accidentally shut it down clicking shut down
this of course started to install updates
after starting it again windows wanted to configure the updates
an hour later my vm closes because i don't have space on my drive
curious as i was i went and looked at my drive
and oh wonder it was full
i then looked at the diskfile and it was massive 160gb
realizing that windows did some fuckery when i updated i started the vm turned of windows update and then i had to waste time getting the disk file to a proper size

anyways can someone explain to me what the fuck windows was doing while "configuring" the updates? how can it possibly inflate the drive to such retarded degrees

According to the table released by Microsoft, "ETERNALBLUE" was fixed by MS17-010 released in March. Interestingly, MS17-010 listed all vulnerabilities as "not used in exploits". Microsofts acknowledgement page does not list a source for the vulnerability disclosure.
This is reason enough to never use Windows again. Call me tinfoil, but this is highly suspicious. Source:

You may have been hit with the exploit from another source. This runs far deeper than this shitty ransomware. Google Eternalblue and see how serious this is if you go unpatched or lack the knowledge of how to secure your network, or were just unaware. The internet was being scanned for vulnerable machines almost immediately after the release of this. You may very well be hacked if you waited until today to update.

I followed the release of this from the start. There were people here, on this board doing exactly what I described, on the day of the ShadowBrokers dump. Check the archives. Read up on the exploit. I'm not making this up, security experts were warning anyone who would listen. This is an article from 6 days after the ShadowBrokers.

Note the number of infected machines in this article and realize that this was nearly a month before WannaCry. These were NOT WannaCry infected machines, they were machines infected using the exploit that the WannaCry authors used to spread their ransomware.
