Why doesn't all Windows software work without a hitch in this emulator yet?
>>
>>60362023
Closed source library apis.
>>
>>60362023
Because WINE is basically guesses how the system should respond for some desired result
>>
it's not an emulator you fucking dipshit

/thread
>>
How do you guys go about troubleshooting programs that aren't in the AppDB?
>>
>>60362138
its an emulator and ublock is an adblocker and thats just the world we live in anon

>>60362115
why not make an emulator that guesses how wine should behave then?
>>
Give me a list of popular, actually useful programs that don't work in wine/crossover.

Then let's make a list of gnu/linux native alternatives for those.
>>
>>60362258
World of Warcraft
>>
>>60362496
werks for me
>>
>>60362496
WoW is rarely broken.
>>60362154
Run it from command line and see what the error it spits out is.
>>
>>60362258
Pretty much anything with some special DRM.
>>
>>60362258
sengoku rance
>>
>>60363656
That runs, just terribly
>>
>>60362023
Because the amount of effort that would take isn't worth it when VMs exist.
>>
>>60362258
Basically any eroge
>>
>>60363758
Eroge actually run with Wine, unless they run natively.
>>
>>60362173
Wine Is Not an Emulator
>>
>>60363806

I think he meant the 3d "games", not the VN/KN kind.
>>
>>60363821
Which also run with Wine?
>>
Dipshit DRM. DirectX 12
>>
>>60363832

I suspect the 3dvr ones won't run, at least not well enough that you won't instantly projectile vomit when putting the headset on.
>>
>>60363806
most eroges and doujin games that work run like fucking shit

what's the point when you get like 3 frames per hour

>>
>>60363955

What glitch?
>>
>>60362258
autodesk inventor.
It has excel as a dependency, and while excel works fine with wine, I don't know if that would be an extra problem.
>>
>>60363912
>old Orgrimmar

Brings me back.
>>
>>60363874
No idea, but that might have more to do with hardware support than Wine.

Because if it worked i would use Linux.

Sounds horrible.

Hey Mike, how are you?

Linux works perfectly without this shit from Windows.

Project Reality 2 because of shitty Mumble.
>>
>>60362023
It's against God's will.
>>
>>60362023
It's a moving target for one.

And surprisingly enough, wine actually does a better job in many cases of supporting older software that you need to jump through hoops to get running on Windows 10.
>>
>>60362138
it is, just not in the same sense as things like qemu/console emulators
it emulates parts of windows itself, not a machine running windows
>>
>>60362258
Microsoft Edge
>>
>>60362023
because it's comprised of clean-room reimplementations of windows api's/libraries, which interface with linux api's/libraries
these implementations aren't all quite as complete or accurate to the real thing as the real thing

considering how it's made, and what it's trying to do, it's amazing how much does work
>>
>>60365066
(well, not just linux apis/libraries, wine is supported on a couple other os's as well)
>>
>>60365066
wouldn't wine work better if I just ripped all the api's/libraries out of windows and used those instead of the reimplementations?
>>
>>60365414
you can do that for some libraries, but not the apis
for example you couldn't, say, replace the entire audio system with windows ones, since the windows ones will want to talk to the windows kernel and drivers, which don't exist in linux
while the wine ones talk to linux stuff like alsa/pulseaudio
>>
>>60365452
what if I just ripped the windows kernel and drivers too and ran those in a VM?
>>
>>60365504
you'd also need to run the wine libraries in the vm
but at that point you might as well be modifying reactos, rather than wine
or even just start with windows and strip it down to what you want
>>
can i play hollow knight with wine?
>>
>>60365504
Why not just a virtual machine then?
>>
>>60362023
But anon, Wine Is Not an Emulator.
>>
>>60362173
I got a 16gb USB dongle
>>
>>60365580
i'll download it and have a look
apparently a native linux version is due out sometime this year as well
>>
>>60362258
RPG Maker
>>
>>60362258
any video game, and if they do work, it has worse performance than windows.
>>
>>60366438
It has worse performance but not by much if the support is good. I won't cry about 5-10 fps, it's good enough.
>>
>>60366438
Not now that we have wine staging with gallium nine patches for native DX support. A lot of DX9 games run smoother on Wine this way than on Windows

because windows is an enormous piece of shit not just figuratively, and it's very hard to precisely reverse engineer a sophisticated piece of shit
>>
>>60364511
Read wineDB and follow the guides.
>>
>>60366997
yup but i can't get the game to detect my ps3 controller
>>
>>60368847
i'm looking into it, it seems controller issues with that game is common on windows
>>
>>60369268
>>60368847
hmm, can't get mine working
works find in other games (including wine)
even tried x360ce (despite emulating a 360 controller using xboxdrv)
game doesn't detect anything, considering what i've read, i'm not convinced this is even a wine issue, plenty of people on windows can't get their controllers working with this game, either
