General reminder that you need at least KB4012212 for windows 7 KB4012216 for windows 8.1 and KB4013429 for windows 10.
You can download the patches from Microsoft's servers by clicking on the OS you have in the table which will take you a download page for it.
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/ms17-010.aspx
It is also acceptable to install the later cumulative security updates which contain the older fixes.
If you don't want to update at all then you can disable SMB entirely (is enabled by default all windows versions).

I might be wrong about this, but I don't thinks ISPs are connected to you via TCP/UDP.

They are connected to you on the physical layer of the internet. You connect to others via their infrastructure. Your traffic doesn't go through their computers, afaik. So whatever malicious shit is on the web, it may travel to you only if you access it somehow or if you have a service running on your computer which keeps port 445 open and can be connected to remotely.

I would like to phone in here.

I have "been doing" IT for 30+ years, and, yes. I wrote a virus back in the day.

The media has blown this a bit out of proportion.

This particular "hunter" was patched a few months ago.

This particular virus/malware package doesn't traverse anywhere near the way it is claimed.

Up to date protection will protect you.

This is bad if you get it, for sure, but we're not talking SQLWorm bad.

Are you behind a router? If so, better firewall it from there so all your PCs on the network are protected.
In fact, by default, almost all routers should 'capture' 445 traffic and discard it unless you manually forward it to another system.

Simply check your port forwards (or virtual servers) list. If port 445 and 139 are not on the list, then anything thru those ports will not get past the router.
