I made it into a gameboy and sold it for 150 usd.

I use it as a small NAS and for general purpose music streaming over the network

almost got one years ago when it was a new thing but then i heard that they should cost ~20€ and not 50€ like they do here so i didnt.

I made a live webcam with it and and ancient ms webcam.

$220 nest webcam for $40

Goddamn piece of junk
>>
>>60354064
Yeah, buy the nest cam has night vision.
I'm considering making a ghetto nest cam with my old raspberry pi 1 model B too, but I want it to have night vision. Also, my old 720p Logitech webcam has a focal too low, everything in the background is blurry.
>>
>bought zero w
>it hangs off the charger doing nothing

>>60354644
My old tablet had a processor about equivalent to the rPi's, I practically only used it for emulating N64 and PlayStation games. Sounds like you're doing it wrong.

I use it all the time dude. It runs Kodi and Emulators and I can use the SPI interface to flash chips without relying on cheap ass SOP8 clips from chinkland
>>
>>60354693
Pi Zero is great for making tiny things internet connected. If you didn't get it for a specific application, or have a number of projects that could use it in some way, you did it wrong.
>>
>>60355177
You know what? You're right. If you couldn't figure something out, no one else could either, because you're just that much better than everyone else.

Someday you'll realize that your arrogance has held you back while everyone else continues to learn new things every day.
>>
>>60355177
its literally the best way to learn linux as a windows user

its powerful enough to do real shit yet just under powered enough youll have to actually learn to adjust, remove and replace software components to find the right fit
>>
>>60355300
>>60355303
He's just a troll guys
>>
>>60355378
I'm not trolling though, people that buy the raspberry pi are ignorant.

There were always better products available, broadcom is garbage, and they would know that if they had spent more than 5 minutes researching products instead of jumping on a bandwagon like an iTard.
>>
i use one as a plex and nas server.

unencoded, it can run 1080 video
add on subs and/or transcoding, 720 at most

usb 2.0 read/write speeds that may throttle down to even less due to network transfer, which is okay for background backups.

vnc to desktop so i can access a running emacs where i keep a todo list

for the price, it was decent. If i paid more, I'd probably want to get a full on desktop.

a project I might do, is the amazon echo. all that's needed is a usb mic and audio speaker. but I already have an echo.
>>
>>60355459
Ok, assuming you're not trolling, name a single product that incorporates a modestly powered SoC, with WiFi and bluetooth, 1080p video out, and has excellent community support, with multiple distributions available and up to date, that costs less than $50
>>
>>60354033
If you buy them direct yeah

Because pretty much any of the competitors are better.
>>
>>60355619
Stop dodging the question, you still haven't named a device with the features I want.
>>
>>60355177
Not him, but retropi for my bar, easy to unplug and take to camper or whatever
Kodi (mostly) that I use in car on 8" carputer
actually so cheap, might get a third for my 2 old timey garage doors so I can monitor if they are open, and open them remotely.
I'm not even good at this stuff, had one do some basic weather shit outside but never used it so it became car one.

The mere fact that you think I think that just further proves your retardation.

Scary how you don't seem to be able to make substantial arguments that hold their weight, but are also obviously provocative, and make you look like a troll.
>>
>>60356316
because it does just work.

dunno what you want. People are gonna keep buying them and they're gonna keep suiting needs while you pop a blood vessel over it.
>>
>>60356316
"It just works" is a perfectly valid argument. Why would you make things harder on yourself for no difference in the outcome?
>>
>>60356320
v4l lets you disable autofocus and change the focal length that guy just wants someone to hold his hand (hence the raspberry pi purchase) and now he will just buy more shit because he can't figure it out :)
>>
>>60356387
:^)
>>
>>60356367
The drivers and the specs of the SoC are just about all that matters. People buy the PI because they are too scared to do anything on their own and are under the impression that the support is better for it, basically they are just ignorant and lazy.

Using a competitor isn't any harder, they just flip out because the video tutorial they got linked to on pinterest only works for a PI and start saying stupid shit like it fits my use case because they are mindless retards.

I enjoy Gigabit Ethernet on my desktop and server because I actually make use of my server as a NAS and push large files to it, but an rPi is a shitty NAS solution.

Are these things worth getting for a comp eng student?
I'm interested in getting a toy that would let me practice my skills on things that have real world value and aren't just programming for the sake of learning concepts.
For example would I be programming at the level of needing to read their data sheets for their registers/implement interrupt routines/etc?
>>
>>60359967
Nah, the hardware's way too abstracted and not all of it is open source (or even has datasheets available).

I'd recommend a powerful Arduino if you want to get into that sort of stuff. You have software like Arduino studio to get you started, but you can go as low as you want.

Not really related, but I bought one of these for dirt and slapped Arch on it to use as a torrentbox/NAS. It was cheaper than a rPi but obviously has fewer features. It was a tradeoff I was willing to accept for my use case.

I'm probably going to buy a rPi Zero to make a portable MemeBoy system for the fun and soldering practice.

I have one and am using it to play around with linux, sometimes it's good to have a separate machine instead of a VM
the pi3 gets hot quick and you need a fan unless you want it to throttle itself
also it maxes out at like 2.5 amps, people power it off of a USB 2.0 port and then complain when it runs but can't get enough juice
I like the idea of cheap ARM SBCs though so I might get an orange pi or other "pi" as better ones come out

"innovative" is a bullshit word. STEVE "HAVE MY BABIES" JOBS was innovative. Some kid using a pine cone taped to a twig to scratch his back is innovative. just do something stupid with it.

set it up with a touch screen to connect to a 4chan board and display random images that switch to new ones when you touch the screen

then modify it to show posts with many replies (not just op)

then modify it so that it shows whatever post it responds to

etc etc until you realize it's a waste of time and you've already earned an A

It's not an rPi but I use my SBC for using my HDDs on an OS that can't read the FS and in the future for Internet over 6LoWPAN at my friend's house.

I read the thread.

but what do you do
>>
>>60362056
I'm not willing to read through 90% of autistic screeching for the off chance, that I might find one random half row, that is mentioning something actually useful to do with an rpi.
>>
>>60362165
Nobody's asking you to read through 90% of /g/'s autistic screeching, they're expecting you to read through less than 1% of it.

It may be worthwhile if you *know* you'll be using the pinouts. That's the only thing it has to make it more useful than the computers you already have. An Arduino clone may be more useful. Some of the clones are better than the official made-in-Italy models, with prototyping areas so you don't need a separate breadboard for small stuff. Some of the cheaper ones can fry a motherboard they're connected to, so be careful.

What are you going to do with that cluster?

Or you could use distcc and cross compile on another machine.

How?

it was a joke anon

>bought an Odroid to use as htpc / media server
>be gifted a raspberry pi 3
>win another raspberry pi 3
>build a proper mATX home server and a proper HTPC / gaming box

>now have an Odroid C1+ and two rpi3s with no good uses
Every good idea I've come by (nas, seedbox, pihole dns, etc) is better run by my actual home server.

I guess I should look into embedded projects.

how do I draw to a tft screen without linux?
>>
It's me. I used it (512MB at first, then upgraded to Pi 3) exclusively as a desktop computer for a while and basically still love it for the aesthetics and being actually well supported ARM SBC hardware with GPU. I do now use a PC tho, but I'm still a Pi nerd and I'm looking to code a demo for it soon.
>>
>>60365226
Pi 3 (especially since cloud computing exists and is cheap) is really a viable workstation. I'd imagine in a few years offices will have Pis or something similar at each employees workstation, everything else is done in the cloud or on prem/dc servers.
>>
Why would this be a meme? Just stick a 10.1 inch screen and 20k xiaomeme powerbank, and use it as a tablet which actually has Arch/Ubuntu/Android and more battery than any other tablet out there, bonus if odroid xu4. easier to upgrade/repair the hardware than any other tablet
The only problem would be making a case, i guess

Or just buy a decent small screen and small keyboard, and use it as ultra portable computer (for places that has power outlet), I imagine normies would be crazy for that shit, no?

Especially if the "Pi 4" has at least 2GB RAM, solves the SD card bottleneck, and is better capable of web video playback
