What will the Linux desktop look like in 5 years? Do you think it will fade in to total obscurity or actually have a chance at competing against MacOS and Windows?
Just ditched my dual-boot of Windows and finally made a permanent switch on all of my machines.
>>60347082
ffs
There still will be no thumbnails in the gtk file picker.
>>60347116
lol didn't even notice at first.
I'm guessing this has been a problem for a while?
desktops will fully die for home use in favor of mobile devices anyway
>>60347189
Nemo?
Fedy has some cool modifications for Gnome version of Fedora.
Shame I hate Fedora with a passion.
>>60347282
Never used Fedora for more than 5 minutes, so I wouldn't know. I just use what comes with Cinnamon.
>>60347288
Holy shit that's hilarious
>>60347082
cute
It'll look the same as it does now, except Unity will be a quaint, abandoned hipster DE that everyone here will suddenly love.
>>60347962
We need more qt DEs, so it would be nice if someone forked unity 8.
>>60347962
I'll be here laughing when that happens.
I really don't understand why some prefer it over the other DE's.
>>60348130
The fuck is a qt DE?
>>60347070
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>60348167
>qt DE
kde?
>>60348167
Something based on qt instead of gtk. Right now it's basically only KDE, unity 8 was using qt as well.
>>60348233
I never realised that about Unity 8. Also wasn't this supposed to be the year of LXQt?
>>60348205
Good meme.
>>60348224
>>60348233
Oh okay. Not really a fan of KDE and I've never used Unity 8 so I have no idea what qt has to offer.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>60348268
>LXQt
Isn't it based on kde framework anyway?
>>60347070
>Linux desktop
Linux is a kernel, retard. It has nothing to do with what is running your desktop.
>>60348297
>19k messages
what the fuck
>>60348417
kde is shit bro
>>60348406
Yes I know, I'm just not autistic enough to call it that.
Everybody here understands that I'm talking about GNU/Linux when I provide proper context. If everyone else can, you can too.
>>60348450
Too bad that gnome is even worse and I'm not into tiling wms.
>>60347116
Windows 10 either.
The future of Linux depends entirely on game development and support. Anybody who doesn't believe this is kidding themselves.
>>60347070
I think it will be pretty much where it is at right now, a niche for people who care about open source or free software. I'm curious if we can even drop X in that short amount of time.
>>60347070
What does "desktop Linux" even mean? For the most part, all you need is a shell or terminal. In that regard, desktop Linux has been robust for years and years.
>>60349692
no it doesn't
no server administrator wants to run games on his servers
>>60347082
>Macfag
Opinion offically discarded.
>>60349692
The future of Linux adoption depends on that. But even if everything stays the same or even if game developers turn away from the platform, it will continue to exist, just with fewer users.
>>60349650
I didn't have that problem when I was running W10.
>>60349719
Why would we want to drop X?
>>60349692
For Linux to reach the masses, I completely agree. I'm just waiting for Adobe to release The CC for Linux so I can ditch Wine as well.
>>60349754
Your friends must think it's a blast to talk with you.
Try to fit in to a conversation like a normal person for once.
>>60350184
>Why would we want to drop X?
Multi monitor support and hooking up projectors is a mess. Also it is full of security risks.
>>60350184
>I didn't have that problem
I don't have to care.
>>60350265
True, just remembered the pain of getting my second monitors proper resolution set.
>>60350285
I was implying that it's probably a bug you're just having. The GTK file picker lacks the feature of thumbnails, the Windows file manager doesn't.
>>60350349
GTK lacks it because they don't care. MS in other hand fucked up and they are supposed to be the best os, but it's just a crap.
It will fade into obscurity as their pitchman richard "I eat my feet shit" stallman dies off and BSD rises as our pitchman theo "cucks dont use openbsd" de raadt takes his rightful place as /g/ /ourguy/
>>60350446
Linux isn't riding on Stallman at all, the free software people actually have to use a 'libre' kernel which isn't the mainline version.
A beautiful new era where anime desktop posters and arch ricer fags are hung on a cross and /g/ becomes a bastion of programmers, professionals, and people with meaningful projects instead of adhd kiddies with their arch wank threads
>>60350446
>the foss meme guy dies
>suddenly everybody convert to a security testbed
>>60350514
my nigga.
>>60349692
Linux has 0 a.d. though. That's really all you need.
>>60347288
My fucking sides!
Like a Unity 8-Deepin clone
>>60353832
What am I looking at?
>>60353865
Windows 3.1 in Spanish
>>60355875
cool
>>60347228
This.
I wouldn't even bother having a pc if it wasn't for my job.
>>60347288
I use thunar and this isn't a problem
>>60347288
Dolphin doesn't have this problem
>>60347070
The future is now
