Of the colors that I have it shift through that strange pinkish purple is the only one that doesnt wash my shitty camera out and even then it has to be set at 20% or less of total light output.

As it stands I really like the greens and blues it can do, some of the colors like fuchsia look pretty good too.

If the lamp itself obcures most of what it illuminates, it's kinda pointless. Also it's not about illuminating a keyboard (not necessary if touch-typing) but rather a book or other text which sits betwen the keyboard and monitor, all the while avoiding lamp glare on the screen and a glaring lamp in one's field of vision. The cowl prevents light from going in my eyes or monitor and the light seems to diffuse nicely on to whatever I'm reading/drawing. Pic related, I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for.

The books or other printed materials I'm reffering to in particular is stuff like texts on programming, Linux, etc. which you need to read actively while working out the examples on the computer. It's already a major hassle to even get a paperbook to lay open on the desk withouth having to hold it, and proper lighting (as outlined above) becomes yet a separate issue. How do you usually cope with these?

Glossy paper shouldn't pose much of a problem, as programming/OS/networking/etc. books you might be working through on the computer hardly if ever have glossy paper (according to my experiences at least). The issues are 1) a paperback book lying flat (or slightly slanted towards your eyes) on the desk in with the distance enabling you to read it comfortably without obscuring the screen or hindering you in using the keyboard, and 2) illuminating the book properly so it is comfortable to read while the screen and your eyes stay clear from glare.
